Derek Draper, the author and former political adviser, has passed away at the age of 56, as announced by his wife Kate Garraway. He had been facing severe complications from Covid since he contracted the virus in March 2020.
Kate Garraway, confirmed his death through a statement shared on Instagram. She expressed her sadness, informing followers that Derek had been critically ill since experiencing a cardiac arrest in early December. The complications were exacerbated by the damage caused by Covid in March 2020.
In her message, Garraway mentioned that Derek spent his final days surrounded by family, and she was with him, holding his hand during the last challenging hours until he passed away.
Kevin O'Sullivan and Alex Phillips speak with TalkTV correspondent Oliver-Whitfield-Miocic, TalkTV presenter Penny Smith and former government adviser James Price.

So sad to hear that Derrick has died. I lost my beautiful brother to covid in 2021, he was 48 . My brother fought valiantly for 4 months . Knowing Derrick had fought it and was able to go home made me happy. I soon realised though that he still had to do battle with the aftermath of the disease , and with the love of his family he fought to the end. Rest in beautiful golden slumber Derrick you deserve nothing less than to have a billion stars to light your dark and the softest of pure white clouds to rest your weary head.

@@casper18008it wasn’t just Derek. Thousands of other people were also being prioritised treatment across the UK during the pandemic. Sadly, many people lost their lives from other illnesses because the NHS was stretched beyond capacity. There are people still suffering today from long covid side effects. The NHS are still treating patients for this. You don’t hear about your average Joe Bloggs because they are not in the public eye! Do you think that they should have pulled the plug on Derek then? It sure sounds like it! Derek and Kate went from a two people household earning wages to one person. Kate had to close Derek’s business down because he clearly could not work and Kate was hit with a £700,000 tax bill because of it! Unless you have walked a mile in their shoes, then how about you keep your bitter comments to yourself!

No doubt he agreed to being filmed; hardly likely she would have done it without his permission. The expense of 24/7 care at home for several years must have been enormous. Plus the expensive equipment required and possibly remodelling the house. It would not have all been covered by NHS or even private insurance. Plus there were other medical attempts (overseas?) which also would have cost a fortune. No doubt the various media offerings went some way towards paying the huge medical bills.
@jimbo6693

@@barbarajones9385 Well it certainly wasn't her looking after him full time was it.?! She made a bloody fortune out of it. Books, documentaries, award nights, quiz shows, Smooth Radio. They were millionaires to start with and as for him agreeing to the filming, the poor bloke didn't know what day it was never mind being mentally cognitive. For gods sake she milked it for all it was worth. Absolutely disgraceful..
@barbarajones9385
@barbarajones9385 7 ай бұрын
@jimbo6693 Obviously she is not trained to look after an extremely ill patient. Specialists were supervising, trained nurses taking care and monitoring developments. The costs would have likely amounted to millions. For others suffering long covid, this might have been useful in placing the reality of long covid in the public eye - many people are sceptical about it. Are you involved or invested in this story in some way? Do you have a reason for your intense dislike? Have you worked with either party? I am neutral, not invested, but I do think talking about long covid is important and useful. Plus people nowadays do often document the progress of a loved one's illness it's not all that unusual, especially with two public figures. I wonder why this specific story has made such an impression on you.

@@jimbo6693What’s disgraceful is your inappropriate comments! Kate could not care for him 24/7 because she still had to pay the mortgage and bills etc they went from two people earning wages to just one! It’s all relative no matter how much you earn. Kate had to close Derek’s business down and was hit with a £700,000 tax bill. Kate also highlighted how little Carers earn for the hard work that they do! Also how difficult it is for family caregivers. Between Kate’s work commitments and looking after their children, she was caring for her husband, often with little or no sleep doing all of the above! Not once did she complain as she was trying to be strong and positive for her husband and children! Give the poor Woman a break!

When someone is poorly, it’s down to the Medical Specialists only to determine whether or not they are fit to fly. This has to be documented and given to the airline prior to flying! Obviously, Derek was deemed fit enough to do the flight!

As mentioned, only a doctor/specialist determine whether or not that person is fit to fly. They would not put their name or signature on official documents, declaring a person is able to if they are not,because if that person became ill during the flight and urgent medical attention needed then the aircraft has to divert to the nearest airport. This costs the airline’s hundreds of thousands of pounds. As for the reason as to why he had the heart attack is not for me to speculate

In his case, CV-19 did play a role. His body was ravaged by the virus and he barely survived. Yes, there is a survival rate of 99.8% from Covid, and some of us never even get it (me included), but his survival from the virus was marked with dramatic internal damage, including damage to his heart. It's akin to a cold causing the death of a cancer patient, while the cancer didn't technically cause their death it was certainly a contributing factor in that their body was unable to fight off the virus.

Garraway really is milking it. And if you read the piece on Sky News by Jon Craig, Draper was prone to boasting about his own importance and getting above himself (according to Peter Mandelson). That's just some context for all you people crying over someone you didn't even know.

@@harrys1505so you walked a mile in her shoes…nope! Mortgage, bills etc had to be paid as they went from a household of two earning an income to one! In between Kate’s work commitments and juggling the household, looking after their children, she was there every step of the way for her husband! Kate could have left Derek in the hospital or put him into a home and life would have been a lot easier for her. With her tenacity and positive attitude, she hoped against all the odds that Derek would be more likely to recover in his own home and family environment. Without looking at the bigger picture, you are in fact a very narrow minded individual! A thoroughly unpleasant one at that!

People grieve in lots of different ways! I wanted to go back to work the next day after my Mother passed away. I needed routine and to keep busy as opposed to sitting at home crying. It’s possible that Kate may already have done a lot of grieving, due to Derek not being the same man that she once knew and loved, prior to his illness! Same principle as people that have lost loved ones to dementia and Alzheimer’s! They lost that person long before their death!
