Thankyou Anthony . The theme of Hope is important at this uncertain , challenging time. God in Jesus is hope to us. In turn, God in us, through the Holy Spirit, is hope to our World. We are called to be hope to the world. This is what drove Catherine and William Booth. We look at the hurting and needy people in our street and across the World. We are here for a purpose, to be hope, just like the volunteers who carried those stretchers and help to those caught up in the blitz 80 years ago.We may easily feel frustrated that we are not research doctors working 24/7 to develop a vaccine . We may feel frustrated that we cannot open our church centre or citadel doors to welcome those on our doorstep who are struggling and need a place of hospitality and advice . We may feel frustrated how can we live out being hope when we are self isolating or even shielding possibly for months. We can live that hope by picking up a phone and ringing someone we mostly only exchange pleasantries with at the end of a gathering. Pray about who God may prompt you to ring up. We can live that hope by praying for Salvationists seeking to be hope in communities that are devastated by the virus, such as care homes , the economic shutdown such as Newnham in East London which has been hit hard, donating our prayer,care and cash if we can manage it. Communities across the Developing World are facing the virus and and economic consequences with far less of a hospital and financial safety net than Britain . It was many years before William Booth attached the word Army to the movement . I am proud of this, it should remind us we are not just hear to receive blessings and hope from God, but we have purpose, to be that hope, live that hope in any creative opportunities God gives us, to have honest conversations with those who grieve, who are really anxious. Opportunities for those of us who are indoors to encourage those who are able to get about. We live in a country, and World where there is still much need, people struggling, people rejected, injustice and we are called to live hope, to be hope amongst them, though we will have to do it more imaginatively . We do not have to put the shutters down and close the doors on our purpose to serve God's kingdom here and now.
