Nomad Over Normal

Күн бұрын

I played house swap with my grandmother when I graduated college. For the last three years I've been living at her house, while she moved in with my parents. I grew my business here, had relationships here, lived a life near a major city. This has been home.
This video was filmed in Early June, 2021, and only now did I publish it.
The original Reddit post can be found here:
@alism/comments/phyipf/i_live_in_a_grandma_style_house_as_a_minimalist/
The original posting was influenced by another post on the r/minimalism subreddit titled, "Why is minimalism so white?" There was a heavy discussion on that post discussing various reasons why the trend became synonymous with no personality.
Although my living situation is not my own aesthetic, I wanted to make that post to describe to people that minimalism isn't buying ikea furniture, nor is it any one look. It's about using resources at your disposal.
I did just that to the fullest extent. I hope you enjoy yourself on this tour.

I also came here from Reddit. My parents (ages 93 and 84) both recently moved into assisted living, and they had lived in their home (the house I grew up in) for 49 years. A lot of the furniture in your grandmother's house is similar to my parents'; and my parents also had the same style of bathroom tile (the house was built in 1953), except theirs was blue and black. This was a great video - thanks for sharing.

I remember your reddit post. I'm sorry about the passing of your grandmother. You did a great job preserving her home and loved this video. I lived with my grandmother at the beginning of the pandemic for a couple months to help her with end of life care. My grandfather decided to sell their home and I decided to take some sentimental items that reminded me of the home and my grandmother. This reminds me of your inquiry of suggestions for keeping some items like the crocheted table coverings. I like to use the sentimental items I kept in holiday decor for a couple reasons. 1. Because they are only used for a short time period, it's okay if they aren't perfectly functional (square table cloth/round table). 2. It's nice to be reminded of loved ones on special occasions. 3. It's easier to care for them and preserve them since they aren't being used year round. Now, as a minimalist, I didn't keep too many things, but chose my favorites from the collections. I would maybe pick your couple favorite beer cans of your grandfathers. You could repurpose them as plant container. I repurpose my grandmothers scarf by tying it in a bow as a christmas tree topper. Should you decide to purchase the home and renovate, maybe take some nice photos of the original fixtures/decor and make a nice coffee table book with them. I think the home and story behind the home is beautiful and nothing to be embarrassed about. Thanks for sharing it with us!

I'm sorry for your loss as well. That beer can to flower pot idea is such a good call. If I keep anything from this house it would be 4-5 of those :) Your write up was beautiful. Thank you for spending the time.

Als came through Reddit. So sorry about your grandmother. Loved the video, it's such a great house! I would imagine it's actually a good way to grow into your own in the loving environment of the family, but without their actual presence in the house. Don't sell it! If it's close to NYC maybe you can rent it out as location for filming or photoshoots, the interior is rare these days.

I came from reddit. Cool video! I love the hand-crocheted tablecloth. My family also had a lot of plastic on the sofas. It was a thing to "keep furniture good."

Came here from Reddit. Loved your video. Very nice film work. I think the "crochet" is tatting. If you end up storing it, add some moth balls. :)
