When I was a kid my mom worked at the local pay phone company in town. The owner was super cool and gave me a copy of the companies calling card when I was in the 3rd grade. I never once had to pay to use any pay phone. That dang card would have like 100k minutes at all times to be used and worked everywhere even when we went out of state on vacations until about 2001 or 2002 when the guy sold the company. He saw cell phones being more and more accessible and sold it before the market died off. He was smart and very generous.

Pay phone inside a nearby hotel from the Pentagon on 9/11 allowed me to connect with my family back home in Florida. I accidently left my cell phone at home on that morning. That phone site also became popular for the vintage old school ways memories of people who lived in that day and age... @@briandavis96 hey, how are you? I think what you did was so cool. The news clip said you had it tied into your home phone, so if that's the case how do you deal with long distance calls that people would make? Or is the coin box setup to handle payment for those? I was just curious as to the specifics. Down here in north Texas, there's a payphone in a booth right off from the town square in Decatur Texas. I stopped, took some pictures and tried the phone and it was dead, no dial tone. If it had been working, I would have called my parents old home # just to see if anyone answered. They've been gone along time now but who knows what would happen...if you flashed back in time and stepped inside one. LOL Sounds more like a Twilight Zone episode I guess. Anyway, kudo's for the cool thing you did. I bet many parents have stopped by and used your pay phone for a teaching moment for their Kids who didn't grow up knowing what they were. Stay safe & cool.

Pivotal to this little trick, (which I used frequently when I was much younger) was having a Telephone extension in My Bedroom. If I was out late, I’d find a Telephone Call Box and Phone Home. Then when My Mum answered the phone, (it was usually My Mum) I’d say “it’s ok Mum, I’ve got this, it’ll be for Me anyways”. Then My Mum would hang up, confident in the knowledge that I was already home and safe in My Bedroom. Smart as she was, she never caught on.

If I wandered far enough and daylight began to wane I'd find a pay phone to get a ride back. The thing I remember most is how vulnerable I felt as a kid on the pay phone, in order to reach family I'd have to be tethered to this thing that was out in the open, often in high traffic areas and it was a clear signal that I was without an adult. I'm very grateful that everyone, especially kids, has a way to contact family on their person.
