Step by step on how to make your own! Due to limited space and time, our Tribe recently decided to build a mobile raised bucket garden. We love the idea of using our space creatively and a bucket garden seemed to be a perfect fit. So we can move it easily, we installed rotating wheels to our garden.

Your design is one of the best combinations out there. You could make a lot of people happy by posting the measurements for the design instead of repeatedly ignoring the requests. Take the time and measure the pieces. You might get more people to visit your site and even look at other areas.

Actually, it's much simpler than this. You don't need to stair-step the buckets. All you need is a square wood frame on casters that will hold all the buckets at the same level. That will take up the same amount of space horizontally but less space vertically than the stair-step method. With a one-level frame, it will hold the same amount of buckets at the lowest level with casters/wheels to push the frame around anywhere you want it to be. Another advantage to this method is that you can cover the entire thing with a layer of plastic sheeting much easier in the late fall to prevent frostbite on some of the late vegetables going into the winter.

Unsure how the plants at fence in wood boxes and black buckets will turn out. Oxygen is blocked, maybe I'm wrong but I'd leave walls of box off or put a lid on it and place my plant on it. Not a deep rooted plant as it will hinder the growth too.
@deborahelliott8460
@deborahelliott8460 7 ай бұрын
@@lisayates2490 I have black buckets but they have holes drilled in them for air. I also use drinking straws near the plant bases in soil for the air to get to the roots. But it also depends on if I use the kratky system in the buckets or not. It means I leave about an inch and a half or less with just water and plant food no soil involved and let the plant float in a net cup just so the roots are touching the water. I use both dirt and hydroponic systems for plants.

5 gallon buckets have 0.66 square ft. in surface area and can hold approximately 0.71 cubic ft. of soil. Make sure the buckets are made from food grade plastic and look for sales! I got my buckets for $2.38/each without lids. Normally they cost about $5.00 apiece without a lid.

Food grade doesn't really matter
@tanyawales5445
@tanyawales5445 Ай бұрын
@@maxgreen8520 It does matter especially if you are raising food or herbs. Plastics should be type 2, 4 or 5. High-Density Polyethylene High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a type of food-safe plastic used in milk jugs, water bottles, trash bags and some buckets, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). You can identify HDPE by locating a triangle with the number 2 on the bottom of your container, per the EPA. However, if your garden is outside in your yard, it's important to remember that HDPE containers aren't typically made for outdoor use - exposure to the elements can break them down, so it may be wise to replace these planters often, according to the University of Maryland. Low-Density Polyethylene Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is another common plastic also used to make milk jugs, water bottles and trash bags, according to the EPA. You can identify it by finding a triangle with the number 4 on the bottom of your container. Similar to HDPE, this type of plastic can be used as sheeting to protect your plants from chemicals in treated wood, according to Iowa State University. But you may have to replace them often, per the University of Maryland, as this type of plastic can break down. Polypropylene Polypropylene (PP) is a strong plastic often used to make caps and lids, denoted by the number 5 on the bottom of a product, according to the EPA. PP has a high melting point and is approved for food contact, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. And when it comes to growing plants in plastic containers, this type of plastic is also sometimes recommended as a cover to protect sprouts against elements like frost, per New Mexico State University. PP fabric liners can also be used to protect plants from the chemicals in treated wood, according to Iowa State University. Polylactic Acid Polylactic acid (PLA) is a newer type of plastic derived from renewable resources like corn, wheat and rice, according to December 2016 research in ‌Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews‌. It's most commonly used as a material for 3D printing. But it may also make for a safe plastic planter for vegetables and other plants. That's because the material is bio-based and compostable, making it less of a concern for soil contamination. Plastics to Avoid as Containers for Growing Food

I really like this A LOT, and am going to build one after the weekend. I have a question for you about 2 horizontal boards on this project. At the very top of this planter, you have 1 board at either end (supporting the top tier) that is clearly not 42 inches long, what is the length of those boards??? They would be at the top of the 26 inch vertical boards.

We attempted to plant our first garden this year, but we failed spectacularly 🥴 (we had planted a little past the optimal time frame nor did we do enough homework apparently! 😖😫) Anyway, one day as we were discussing the garden's inevitable failure, I said "what about a garden that you can move around to get optimum sunlight?" (We have a large, fenced in backyard where our neighbor's massive oak tree inhibits sunlignt from reaching it most of the day. 🤬) I'd never actually heard of a mobile garden, but subconsciously it must have been floating around in the back of my head somewhere!! Anyway, we seem to have similar issues that prohibited you from being able to plant a traditional garden as well. When I Googled my idea and found your video, I knew that I had found the perfect guide! 😄 Luckily, my husband has excellent construction skills and this project would be quite easy for him to replicate. Plus, once he sees this video, he'll be able to figure out the measurements, etc. (BTW, your design is beautiful AND seems to be cost effective! 🙂) I'll need to refine my planting techniques a next year, but going mobile is absolutely our best option. Thank you for such a fabulous video; I'm looking forward to next summer and being able to grow a unique, lovely and successful garden!! 🍅🌶🥒🥬🥕😄

Thank you for the kind comment! We have used ours faithfully, but our growing skills are still nothing to brag about. We try, but apparently we do not have green thumbs. But we have fun and we don’t put a lot of money in it. The smaller kids love helping and watching things grow (and not grow😂). Hope your project turns out great.

@@TheTrentTribe Absolutely! 🙂 I don't have a green thumb at all, so it's been very difficult to see all of our hard work go to waste because of our mistakes. Your garden looks like it's doing quite well, so congrats on that! It's great that you're involving the kids as it's a lovely way to spend time together as a family. Thank you for the encouragement; hopefully this time next year we'll have much better luck! Have a wonderful summer and a bountiful harvest!
