It looks so easy the way you got the pallet and dismantled it and used the boards to build a bed. I would actually need to work with someone to learn how to do that and it’s worth it. You could build your own beds and that can save you a lot of money. I enjoy watching your channel as a matter of fact I am going to get started planting some vegetables thanks to you. I have been wanting to grow my own food for a while now but watching you mix your own soil and you practically showed us everything we need to buy and use to do your own garden. I really appreciate your videos and I do live in a house in Tennessee and I have a good size yard so I plan on having at least three beds in my back yard to grow food. Your dog is the first dog I seen eat radishes and he is such a sweet animal.

Nice work. Recycling always wins. When I was demolishing old wooden houses for recycling, to maximize the floorboards recovered, we used the saw to cut the tongue and groove boards 2-3 floor joists wide. Then cut the floor joists. Just like your first cut. I would do the underside of the pallet instead of the top. Remove the 3-4 rails from the bottom first. At the yard we would lay the flooring sections face down. Then get a sledgehammer and roll the floor joists over removing all the boards at once. Nails stayed in the floorboards. Recovery rate 98% for high value timbers no split timbers.

You could but they are braided nails, so they are much much harder to get out. Often it ends up damaging the wood and is very time consuming.

And I really really appreciate the advice to just cut around the nails rather than suffer through the crowbar. It's not really free because of the screws and the saw blade used to cut the nails initially but it's still a great idea which is why I've been doing it for years. I take the time to break them down by prying the boards off so I can use everything. Linseed oil works good for preservation of the wood as long as it's done every years.

This is much more practical than some of the other videos I've watched on how to make these. I'm not taking anything away from those channels, but their builds were much more complicated, and used a lot of glue-ups, and tools that weren't necessary. These things are designed to live outside. They're not supposed to be ultra-pretty, and perfect because the weather, and time are going to kick the crap out of them anyways. I say keep the super-duper hardcore nice ones to inside areas like enclosed porches, decks, and places the rain, and wind won't destroy them.

I love this simple raised bed. I salvaged a large heap of Jarrah floor boards for exactly something like this. My Mrs has been on my back to get rid of them by chopping them into firewood or something however after seeing this she’s sold and wants the first ones for her flowers. Thanks heaps!!❤

Most gardeners are missing the boat. Consider using discarded upright Freezers or refrigerators for a raised bed. They are just the right size for weeding and harvesting at waist height, making them ideal for wheelchair access or seniors, or those with back problems. One or a dozen, it 's up to you. It took me two weeks on Craigslist to get an even dozen boxes, and that was being picky. No stainless steel, or black refrigerators, no side-by-sides, only white boxes. They come insulated, and the type of soil they have is up to you. No more gophers, moles, rabbits, either! Just remove and discard the doors and shelves, fill and plant. Water with a garden hose, or plumb them with an irrigation system from below. Ideal for an apartment with a small patio, or a big yard. No more bending to weed! Best of all, they're free, and you keep them out of the landfill! Details to your questions if you like

@@ashleynunnsmith Actually Ashley, you have to PLUG holes to prevent too much drainage! The boxes come with multiple holes for lines that run into them for refrigerant. I took a metal hole saw and at one end of my boxes fitted a simple pipe with a valve to drain off excess water. You can keep the boxes from holding standing water, and recycle the water to use. Like filling any container, too much water can cause problems with your plants. With the boxes laying on their backs, you have a natural bathtub.

There's this Danish or Norwegian chap on youtube who shows you how to take apart a pallet without splitting the wood and without power tools, just need a heavy (ish) mallet and a crowbar or prybar. As for cutting the wood, you can cut them using a hand saw but need to use a mitre box to cut a perfect 90 degree cut on the ends. Plastic mitre boxes cost a few dollars (I'm in UK and you can get one for £4.99 here). Will need a few clamps though and they aren't cheap either, but find a friend who will lend you some and you're good to go :)

Definitely check 😊! I have a relative who works at a manufacturing facility and she has brought me dozens of pallets over the years, some better than others. They don't all need to be perfect because there is always some usable wood. So far I've made four large raised beds from pallets, about 4' x 8'. The first two I made don't look as nice as the one James just put together but still holding up after four years. That's a good return for a weekend project that cost me only time and a box of screws!

Something most people don't realize is that most pallets are made our of oak, or some other hard wood; not soft pine, so they are REALLY strong and will last a long time. Hence why you don't want to try to remove the nails as they are REALLY stuck into that hard wood. And, trying to drive nails through hard wood without predrilling the holds will almost always end up bending the nails. GREAT video. I've been wanting to do this for several years now and have access to the pallets. So NOW I'm excited to do it, thanks to you!

Here most if not all are made out of pine. Pine is strong enough for this purpose, sometimes they just double the planks. Oak is way too valuable here to be used for pallets. The one in the video looks to be pine too.

I built mine 2'x1'x11" with 5.5" x 6' fence pickets with 4x4 feet but I made them with bottoms so I could experiment and move them as I don't know my backyard's solar profile very well. They're very modular and I will think about other specialty sizes deeper narrower etc

I can't wait to build a couple of beds AND incorporate the hoop greenhouse hoop-tops that you showed us how to build. Why are you such a hater? If you have a handsaw a Phillips screwdriver, hacksaw, hammer and creative as this gentleman then YES! You can do it. Come on now. You might even enjoy it. Just give it a try. You might even surprise yourself and realize that you REALLY ARE TALENTED! Please stop being negative to yourself. YOU CAN DO IT! We believe in you. I did this and my friends n family are like WOW! I have two 16 inch by 40 inch by 10 inch deep raised bed boxes on my apartment balcony and it really intensified the beauty of the place. PLUS! Im growing some herbs, veggies, and some flowers in these 2 beds. The box cost close to nothing mostly sweat and some workout. I spent $25 on the bag of soil and different packs of seeds. I did this after watching your video. It cost only the screws and soil. I rolled some linseed oil on the outside of the bed to preserve it and bring out the wood colors.
