Thank you for this wonderful video. In 1997 my husbanded I bought a 1967 pattern book MCM, raised our family there and restored it over 24 years. When we downsized in 2021 we sold it and built a new house in western Massachusetts in the foothills of the Berkshires. We worked with a fantastic local architect. As I sit in my new house watching this video I easily see the legacy of Charles and Ray Eames in our design.

Jop Cornelis has got to be the world's best expositor of Mid-Century American Architecture. To me, Jop's voice is synonymous with the movement. Eames House & Studio comes to life under Jop's curatorship, and I for one felt I like I now knew the Eames personally. I ever I am so lucky as to get to visit, Jop's voice will guide my ruminations as I meander through this iconic artscape.

Jop, thank you for this great video. I love this house. It's like a perfect marriage of International Style and Organic Style, with the Mondrian look as a bonus. It's thoroughly modern and transparent, way ahead of its time, yet also looks very cozy and friendly as a machine for living. Every detail is ingenious and lovely.

The Eames house and studio is a microcosm of the Eames universe. What's amazing is that what we see and appreciate today is as fresh as ever and remains an inspiration for people who want design to inform life and life to inform design -- a compendium of brilliant aesthetic choices and ideas. Even the exterior arrangements of metal framed glass and colored panels are masterpieces of abstract form. This is a real pilgrimage site. p.s., the Case Study Houses are a great topic for videos.

It feels so different from Lautner's designs, and yet it still embraces a real, organic quality, like Lautner's houses do. You can practically feel that the architect was orientating his entire design around the perspective of the future inhabitants, creating a "living space" in a double sense. A space where people can live, and also a space that seems to be alive and warm even on its own. Thank you, Jop!

Fantastic! It's almost as if you were there yourself. Finally, “Beautiful Details” has a stage in my imagination, and my heroes have a home. Just a small correction: most of the famous Eames furniture was not created in this studio, but in the famous Eames Office at 901 Washington Avenue, Venice. The huge 901 on the façade has become iconic and is a kind of code among Eames fans. At times, dozens of people worked there under the direction of Ray and Charles.

Yes I want to create videos that give people the feeling "almost as if you were there yourself" so I apparantly I succeed in doing so with this one... great to read that you liked the video! ... I was aware of the Eames office in Venice and I know most furniture was designed there with the help of assistants. But most of the rough sketches were done in the studio at home. And most ideas came up at home as well. So I thought it was justified to say created in the house, even if the furniture was not entirely created there. .. For me, the exterior works better than the interior, which hasn’t aged well - over-complicated and fussy. I’d love to see how the Eameses would plan it now, if they were still alive. The narration was very clear and helpful in understanding the design process and engineering challenges - and the mispronunciation was endearing. Thank you

Thanks for your reaction. I think this house is more straightforward than most CSH designs: just a rectuliniar box. CSH 21 and CSH 22 have a more interesting lay-out, i think. But the use of color, double volume livingroom with mezzanine and placing on the beautiful location make it perhaps the most comfortable of all CSH designs. The house has an important place in history due to it's prefab construction, which revolotuinary for it's time & the fames people who lived in the house. I love to take place on my Børge Mogensen 2292 Coupé Sofa by Fredericia and hear “My dear audience…….” This time it would be nicer and more stylish to sit on a Eames Lounge Chair watching this fine video. Living in Europe I am always wondering about the missing insulation of the steel roof. My garage has also a steel roof and on a sunny day it gets very hot underneath. So with air conditioning you should have high energy costs to have a moderate temperature beneath this “naked” steel roof. But energy cost were very low in the 60th. Also it is very, very noisy below such a steel roof during a heavy rain…. But perhaps it’s true that it never rains in California……Have you ever been under this type of roof when it was raining cats and dogs ?
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 3 ай бұрын
oh..interesenting a Borge Mogensen couch is beautifull. I also like Danish Desig, especially Arne Jacobsen. I live in the Netherlands so I'm nor really familliar with Steel roofs. In the Californian climates it rains only a few days a year. Air conditioning can help a lot. The steel roof is double layered with double steel plates. Also the house is located under the trees that provide a lot of shadow. Ultimately I think it was cost effective and good for the time: nowadays there are better solutions. I visited the Eames House, and it was on a very hot day, and inside it was not really hot so I think it worked well.

Great video thank you. The design of the upper floor is a bit confusing: a lot of the space is unnecessarily taken up as corridor (or you could consider it as an insanely big walking closet relative to the floor space). Clearly they did't want bigger bathrooms (since they didm't extend them into the available. corridor space), but if that's the case, was it really necessary to have two separate corridors linking each bedroom and bathroom? If they wanted such privacy, why not make bathroom 2 the same size as bathroom 1 and just put a door straight between bedroom and bathroom 2? As it is, there's dead closet space right in the corner between both bathrooms (only front closet from the yellow corridor can be reached), so why not make bathroom bigger and solve multiple problems at once?
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 8 күн бұрын
Yes, two such bathrooms is indeed very strange. But I guess it's based on the idea that you have two different baths one of the child (the Eames had one child) and one for the couple itself. Personally I also would have made the 2 bathrooms combined together. I also like the lay out of the first floorlevel more than the 2nd.
