I like to say "I make the mistakes so you don't have to," and boy, are there a LOT of mistakes in this one! The good news it I've gotten better. Check out my Tiki Bob and Hawaiian Eye videos to see my improvement!

I know I’m watching this a year late but your videos have been amazing!!! I’m getting my Tiki Bar started and your videos are truly a great tutorial for me. Thank you!!

Thanks Ben! I'm glad you're finding some inspiration here. I did just about everything wrong with this moai I possibly could. Hopefully I'll have some new carving videos before too long that are a little more accomplished.

Thank you! As the creator, tho, I just see how much this fell short from what I intended. Such is life!

Cool idea! I got a big old poplar log out back trying to figure out what to do with it. Now I know. Should have enough for lest 15 this size.

Poplar should be a LOT easier to carve than pecan!

Single digit temps in Northern Illinois have me looking at my tropical plants (that are spending the winter in my south-facing bedroom windows) and looking forward to enjoying my backyard tiki bar in the spring. Thanks for keeping hope alive with your videos.

I feel for you! It's been unseasonably non-winterish here, in that we've not even come close to our first frost. But the cold will come, however fleeting, and all of my plants will have to migrate to the garage. Very much not looking forward to that!

Very informative. There is plenty of carving tips on KZbin but very little specifically about Tiki (which I love). Thanks so much.

Thank you, Donna! I hope to do some more carving in the future, so in a perfect world I'll be able to share more tips and techniques as my (limited) skill set improves!

Thank you, Missy! I'm trying to put information out that folks will find helpful in their builds. Prior to KZbin, I documented my early efforts at constructing my home bar on my blog: jlbgibberish.blogspot.com/search/label/build-along

Great job! Maybe I’ll try to carve a tiki statue in the future. I just don’t want to spend the money on the tools, lol. Thanks for the upload - Very informative!

My pleasure! If you do try your hand at carving, make sure safety is your primary concern!

i love your video,....tHAT BEING SAID, ....IN REALITY YOU SHOULD ONLY BE USING A WOODEN MALLET AND CHISELS!, BUT YOU DO WHAT EVER YOU GOTTA DO !
@LagoonofMystery Жыл бұрын
That would've been a fool's errand on wood as hard as pecan. Palm log is much more amenable to the chisel/gouge approach. My skills with those tools are still dubious at best but I'm working on it! 😉

VERY COOL! Nice job! By the way what is the name of that song toward the beginning of your video? Also toward the end
@LagoonofMystery2 жыл бұрын
"Secret of Tiki Island" by Kevin MacLeod. I include all the song info in the end credits! 😁

Hi Uncle, could you make a video on how to make those tiki style wooden fence posts with the rope in your backyard that are visible in end of this video? I want to make like that. Thanks!
@LagoonofMystery2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'll be able to get to a video on this in the near future, but I did devote a blog post to those posts. If you've got access to a router you're halfway there. Here's the url: jlbgibberish.blogspot.com/2018/05/tiki-build-along-pt-19.html

Ha ha! Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure how much I'm improving, but starting off with a long that's not simultaneously super-hard and rotting will surely help!
