Spike, I just want to say how much my wife & I enjoy your channel. Mid-century fans for awhile now, it was just a matter of time that we discovered Tiki culture & it's community. We're now in the process of converting our home basement bar to Tiki & you have been our #1 inspiration. We've been hitting the flea markets in our state (Missouri) like mad trying to find whatever we can to help with our remodel. It hasn't been easy, but we recently had a bit of luck come our way. Just yesterday an aquaintance had us over to her home to sell off some of her Tiki mugs. Of the 20 or so mugs we acquired, one of them was the Mainlander mug from St. Louis (about 3 hours away). I wish it was still there since there are no Tiki establishments close to where we are. Spike, keep up the good work. Your show is guiding us through our journey and for that we say Mahalo!

The one and only thing I can say is good about being older is that I got to visit the Chicago Trader Vics as a child when my grandfather would take me there on business trips( virgin bahias for me). They still served ALL drinks in all of the traditional mugs. The scorpion/tiki bowl, the hot buttered rum skull mug, and the Nubian coffee mug. As a kid I was fascinated by the decor and the clam shells they served appetizers in(still have few of those around). Thanks for reviving those memories.

I've been secretly obsessed with everything Tiki since I was a little kid in the 70s but the only thing I had was a thrifted mug that someone stole from me so your videos really have me going! Very cool stories. Thanks Spike! I bought some tiki mugs from Etsy last year and one was a Foo Man Chu mug. My husband’s eyes lit up when he saw it. He told me he had one like it that he got at a tiki restaurant in Connecticut back in 1973. It came with a zombie. Unfortunately he can’t remember the name of the restaurant.

Like you my favorite vintage tiki mug is from a local place I wish I could have gone, the Mark Thomas Outrigger in Monterey. I think I did go as a child remembering windows in the floor as it is/was over water in Cannery Row. My buddy Jon picked up two of their mugs at a local thrift store, yes with the wax pencil price in the bottom and after whipping up a couple cocktails one of them was mine.

Very cool episode, Spike. Great job with it. Your show is inspiring to me as I am beginning to discover this wonderful world called Tiki. And just like St. Louis, Mo is a great place for a tiki bar, I feel Vermont would be an even better place.😄 To the best of my knowledge there are no tiki bars in my state, though a pizza place here in Burlington sets up an outdoor bar and seating area in the summer that they claim to be “tiki-style”. It’s not that great. But anyway - keep on doing this, and thanks for your music as well.

I'm from st louis and never knew about that restaurant. The only tiki bar we have now is surprisingly good for the cocktails (their 314 swizzle is a great take on the chartreuse swizzle) but it's kind of simple and small and the food is hit or miss. But now I have a new "holy grail" mug to look for. My previous one was the Trader Sam's hatbox ghost. But since getting a few pop culture mugs maybe I need a little more actual vintage designs.
