Excellency, a concern. You make penance sound as a nice, lovely, fair thing to do. What about the necessity, the requirement to make amends for the temporal punishment due to sin? While a priest's absolution removes the eternal punishment due to mortal sin, it does not remove the temporal punishment. Therefore, the priest gives a penance, which may partially reduce the temporal punishment due to sin. We either makes amends for our due, just temporal punishment by good works, prayers, sufferings, indulgences and diminish our temporal punishment in this life, or, if without mortal sin, and by the grace and mercy of God, in Purgatory in the next.
