Hi Wendy! I left SU after 18 years because I didn’t want to sell anymore and it feels wonderful and freeing. I’m retired, so I’m taking care of myself and just enjoying crafting and making cards.

Thank you for this video. I have contemplated joining SU because I love crafting, but didn’t know about their rule and never thought they’d prevent me from using other products that are similar to theirs. I have 20 plus years of crafting materials and couldn’t imagine not being able to use any of it if I had started with them. You saved me a huge headache. Thank you!

There are so many wonderful stamp companies out there that are innovative and on trend. SU has become stagnant. Also, some other stamp companies offer free shipping on a minimum purchase (year round) and their prices are very competitive. Glad to see you happy with your decision.

I looked through this year’s catalogue trying so hard to be excited about something, anything, but no, it feels flat. I have been buying a lot of Tim Holtz as well as several other brands. SU needs to hire some new creative people and spice things up a bit because they are stale.

I just found your video by chance, but it was very interesting. I was a SU demo for a while and I loved it. I had to leave because I became the full-time caregiver for my grandson when he was 5 months old, and then COVID came along. This past year I have finally been able to start looking into creating again, I've done hardly anything for the past 5-1/2 years, and I see all these products from other companies that I want to try. I was excited to learn a little bit of what you're doing and how you're making a living at it. It makes me even more excited! Thank you for sharing.

First of: I have a lot of respect for all those crafters out there who turn their hobby into a business. Despite the creativitiy and fun, that's still lot of work. Wishing you all the best for your new creative journey! As for me: I'm just a hobby demo from Germany and it was never an option for me to start a business with SU. I am working fulltime, so I don't have that much time to craft anyway. During my time as a crafter, I tried out lots of techniques: Card making and other papercrafts, decoupage, sequin technique, Mixed Media, Upcycling... But I got stuck with paper craft. SU hobby demo life works absolutely fine for me. Though I thought of dropping out from time to time as well. Not because I'm bored by their products, but rather as I oftentimes buy stuff I don't need, just to get my minimum CSV. My stash is getting fuller and fuller, hardly have space for one more pack of paper or an ink pad. Of course, I tried out products of other companies as well. Lots of products from other companies which are well-known in the USA are not even available here. Overseas shipping costs are painful and take ages, might even get lost on the way. The products which are available in Germany simply dont have the quality which SU offers. Especially card stock quality is absolutely useless for stamping. Never found something half as good. And everything matches... I don't know a single company in Europe which has that. Plus, hardly any company offers free shipping here (aside from Amazon) and the SU shipping costs in Europe are fixed at 7,95 € - no matter, how much you purchase )I know the American system is different). However, I totally understand your step and you really sound reliefed that you have taken that brave step 🙂

I believe Gina K Designs ships worldwide. She has coordinating ink and card stock.
@Fifi_Is_My_Name-O4 ай бұрын
Wow, I did not know that SU gave a fixed shipping rate in Europe! One of the biggest customer complaints in the U.S. is the 11% shipping fee which we feel is unreasonable and should be a flat rate (or that shipping should be free with a designated minimum purchase).

I was with CTMH from 2011 to 2024. Signed up with SU in May to give it a try, as I didn't want to be apart from my community. What I've found since joining SU is that the community is not the same family feel that CTMH provided. My hurt hurts right now, and I've lost the joy for crafting. SU feels more like a business, with so many FB groups sending you daily (sometimes 4 a day from a particular group) posts using the impersonal "at everyone" approach. I'm sorry that you are feeling pushed out. Wishing you peace in whatever decision you arrive at.

@@mariastabler8917 I agree with you about the new catalog. Very disappointed in the format as well. And shipping of package of scoring blades and one roll of tape is still expensive. $7.95! I think SU are such great marketers they know you’ll buy more. I have so much stuff I can’t find it when I need it. I’ll probably have to leave because now live on a fixed income and it’s difficult to buy minimum per month especially when there’s not much offered in new catalogue. And now you have to check to see “online specials” so one will order more. Another marketing ploy I’m not comfortable with nor have the time to do. I do love the paper tho’. I too was a SU demo, but mostly as a hobbyist. However, those of us in that category had to comply with the same minimum sales quotas as the other SU demonstrators (at the time I was doing it). So I was buying products I really didn’t care for just to remain in the business. I’m no stranger to this style of sales and have worked for other companies with a similar business model with an “up line”, and a strong focus on not only direct sales but also encouraging others to join under you. I also felt that other companies are more current in terms of product development and that other companies sometimes have better product versions. Also, the areas have lived in are quite saturated with other SU demonstrators so even if I wanted to start selling I didn’t want to compete with others. So happy since leaving the business and actually more opportunities to sell my makes without restrictions. Best of luck to you!

Having been in and out of the SU world a few different times, it's definitely a bubble. I've also been part of design teams with other companies as well over the years. All that having been said, I've never been about to wrap my brain around makers (whether a demo or not) who exclusively use SU products, but I've never been a business builder with SU either. I had been making cards for a couple of years already before discovering SU, so I knew there are sooooo many wonderful products out there from other companies. While I love the quality of SU products, I was never willing to stop using them which is why I knew I would never be more than a hobbyist demo during the times when I have been signed up with SU. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I can't imagine the agony of making the decision you made. I jointed SU as a demonstrator a little more than a year ago but only to get the discount on supplies. I love the designer series papers. At the same time I dislike the feeling of being locked in to one product and I am just learning. I love too many other products and the opportunities for creativity they provide.

Me too. I am doing this as a Hobby. At 81 the prices pinch my budget , so I have to trim my spending a lot. I don't sell my cards they're for fellow church members and classmates. Free.

I have always enjoyed your videos…card ideas, Story Time, etc. I can always take your great ideas and use them to make my cards, whether they are using SU products or those from other companies. You’re delightful and I hope you have continued success with all your endeavors!

One thing I’ll miss is the GREAT color coordination of the cardstock and DSP … I bought some DSP at my local craft shop yesterday. Today I checked to see if my SU! Night of Navy CS matches the blue of my non-SU! DSP! Hmmm … it doesn’t exactly but I’ll get used to it 😊

Love you Wendy! Doesn't matter if you are with SU or not - I've learned (and continue to) a lot from you and will continue to support you. Just a little bummed that I never got to meet you at a past SU event. I was part of Lydia's SU team and she truly is an AMAZING woman! 💙

Wendy I really appreciate hearing today’s post! I’ve always wondered why people who seem to be doing so well leave SU. So interesting to hear your honest feelings. I can almost feel that freedom you were talking about. I’m a hobby demonstrator, been with SU since 98 and have loved the products. I’ve been toying with the idea of leaving for the past 4 years because of other products that are out there from different companies. After the last two recent catalogs and the changes coming up,,,,,,m getting closer to making that decision as well. What you have learned and sharing it with us gives me some courage ◡̈. (I’ve been afraid that I’ll be missing so many fun things with SU, but maybe like you I would find the creative world open up). Thanks for sharing and being so honest. I wish you only the very best in all you do!

@@susanfromcolorado623 yes, big changes are coming! Rewards for one. Likely ink pad change again (which means demos have to purchase all new ink pads. I have been a hobby demo on and off for a few years, but I am done, lapsing a year ago. Shipping is too much. Other companies offer free shipping in a minimum order year round and also have competitive pricing (Gina K for one).

I did not read all of the comments, but I'm curious what you have done with your SU inventory--kept, sold, donated, combination? I appreciate your approach is sharing what you've learned since your decision and how you are doing. Plus, it was good to hear how affiliates work for you. I just passed 18 years with SU as a demonstrator.

I am glad to hear you are feeling good about your decision-and can understand- I use other things and have from the beginning-and I was very slow to add products, like them but hey, find I still bought too much SU but that's on me. I get a charge out of your videos and will stick with you too.

I'm in the same boat. I left SU end of November 2023. It is a lot of learning and admin work to establish yourself with affiliates and adjust to the changes. The vast majority of products out there is definitely overwhelming so I've been in information overload, but I think I finally found my groove, what works best for my family schedule and how I can still keep it fun. And I have to agree that taking a lot of Rhonda Wade courses have definitely been worth what I spent with training. She's a great resource and always felt like she was my biggest cheerleader!

I am so glad to know that you are at peace with your decision. I know that you will experience tremendous growth in your creativity now that you are free of the restraints of loyalty to one company. Your blooming creativity will increase the number of followers you have, which will likewise increase the number of companies that will take you on as an affiliate. Have fun!

So I have a full time job besides being an SU demo, and all I would like to do is to break even on my spending with crafting but I feel like in order to do that, I would have to really bump up the project kits, paper party kits, and classes which I just don't have time for and also recruit people, keep the recruited people and push them to recruit people, when does that leave you time to be crafty or creative? That's too much like a job then. I'm not a salesperson, I'm a paper crafter/card maker.
