House-moving is more than a novelty. Before Home Depot and prefab lumber, and miles of powerlines crisscrossed our roadways, it was easier to move houses than build them from scratch! At least 105 Dearborn, Michigan homes have been moved. Most were moved whole, others piece-by-piece. In every instance, homeowners facing development and urban renewal saved their biggest purchases by moving them to new lots, streets, or cities.
This lecture explores the history of house moving, the rationale behind moving houses, and Dearborn homes whose moves are well-documented. Highlights include Henry Ford’s collection of 19th-century farmhouses, moved to Dearborn Heights, Detroit, Garden City, Inkster, and Westland in the 1950s.
