24mm is a bit wide for me. I find myself using it in crop mode more than not. But I must say: it’s Sony #1 best lens. You can’t fault it. It ticks every box - built quality, size/weight, focus ring smoothiness, focus switch and button, fast 1.4, and it’s even reasonably priced for a premium lens. I just love the feel of it in my hands when shooting

I have this lens and use it for video a lot. I do not have problems with autofocus like you stated you do. Maybe your settings need to be changed in the menu. I almost always shoot in 4K at 24fps and like you said, in crop mode it’s like have two lenses in one. By shooting in 4K and editing on a 1080p timeline, I can zoom in or out and people would never know the video was shot with a fixed focal length lens. I have actually shot portraits with this lens. In the past I always used nothing wider than a 50mm and most of the time a 85mm or longer. I recently shot a video and photos exclusively with this lens at the State Fair of Texas and found that if you are in crop mode in video and you change to shooting photos, the camera stays in crop mode. I shot over 100 photos in crop mode which reduced the resolution to around 10mp. It really didn’t matter though because most all of my work is presented only on Instagram and 10mp is more than enough.

@@beewh001 I bought this lens with my own money and I really like it. That's why I recommend it. If you watch until the end of the video I do say "no matter what camera brand you're using I do think that a 24mm 1.4 is a must have lens". Highly recommend the Sigma, Canon or Nikon 24mm depending on what brand you use, but in my case I use this one because I shoot Sony cameras.
I'm not a big fan of 24mm because of the way that it deforms the subjects and shooting on the edge of f/1.4 I'm not sure if you are getting the whole sharpness potential of your lens - if you care about it. In the other hand, 85 and 100mm lens are just amazing lens. My favorite ones.

Hi Peter! First, I would like you to thank you for all your work. You're a great source of both information and inspiration. Please, I would need you to help clarify something for me. I'm about to purchase my first camera - an A7III but I'm not sure which lense to buy with it. In a previous video you don't seem to be as passionate about the 24MM 1.4 GM as you are in this one? I'm a bit confused. Would you recommend this lense, the 16-35MM F4 or the 28-75MM 2.8? My budget will only allow me to buy one lense at this time so I would really appreciate one that can suit my overall needs. I will use my camera for both photos and videos in many different settings. Portraits, product photos, B-rolls, action sports, martial arts, nature, architecture, club/parties, food, vlogging etc. I realize this is basically everything you can do with a camera and that one lense won't be perfect for all of it, but I'f you could help me choose a winner overall lense, I'd be super grateful. Thanks again! /Adam

@@dna8269 Realistically just the 1.4 over 2.8. The 17-28mm has the least distortion in the middle of it's range (ie 20-24mm) sooo idk. I'm tempted to play with the 24mm GM, but I doubt I'll be seeing it in Best Buy any time soon.

@@nicholassmith7723 And then the question is how often does anyone even really shoot at 1.4? I'm having a hard time seeing the reason for the 24 GM over the versatility of the 17-28, you know? Some may say the GM is sharper, but sharpness doesn't matter for video as much as lighting / color grade does. The Tamron delivers a picture that is more than adequate

why doesn‘t stay the F Stop at 1.4 if you use the Crop-Mode on Mirrorless Cameras. You were mentioning that if you use it on this lense it goes from 24mm 1.4 to 35mm (36) at 2.0 Ist always like that. Is there a formula to use? What would the F-Stop be if I use 85mm 1.8 to crop to 127mm Thanks a lot!
