it's not on the poor street vendors to solve india's issue with sanitation infrastructure. they're just doing the best they can with limited resources. you can easily find sanitary restaurants that are still cheap (by western standards) in india; no one is forcing you to eat street food when that is made by and for poor indians.
@JohnnyB-j1jАй бұрын
Street food vendors have same challenges everywhere. They have food trucks in an abandoned lot in Williamsburg Brooklyn. The local gov't makes every food vendor bring in their own garbage cans and to leave the place spotless. Every vendor is inspected and must have cleaning supplies readily at hand. I've frequented food carts in Korea where they shut off a street and turn it into a night market. There's no infrastructure to support 100 food stalls. Each stall brings in their own cleaning materials and they sweep the place clean every night. I've been to actual night markets in Cambodia -a VERY poor country with no infrastructure and worse, land mines everywhere. Their night markets are clean. Sometimes some garbage wind up on the streets on a busy night. But afterwards, it gets swept clean. So this has nothing to do with poverty or lack of infrastructure. It's about regulations, oversight, cultural norms. For example, 50 years ago, it was an accepted social norm for people to pee on a wall in the street in Korea. Korea was a very poor country and there was no infrastructure for public toilets. Most private homes did not have running water or indoor toilets. But Korea made money since. Government has made enormous efforts at promoting public cleanliness. Nobody pees on the streets or shits in the river anymore. They still do in India. It's not racism to point this out. It's not racism to say that a typical Indian street food stall does not meet the bare minimum hygiene standards of a modern nation regardless of ethnicity. Nobody says that Indians are dirty. Nobody is accusing Indian restaurants in London of being filthy. I love Indian food. I love visiting Indian street food -there's some in Jackson Heights in NY -the most ethnically diverse food scene in the world! I wouldn't eat at a Indian street vendor in India. So I guess I'm not racist. I'm a place-ist. Or is that geology-ist. Or regional-ist? Whatever. I love Indian food just as long as it's not in India.

A country that has entertainment tv shows like Kitchen Nightmare and Bar Rescue, along with a whole slew of local news about disgusting restaurants barely getting shut down even though they're infested and dripping with flies (my fav used to be Dirty Dining - Las Vegas, great segment but really made me nauseous) should really have nothing to say about practices in other countries. Anyone who has ever worked behind the counter anywhere food-related in the West, even a freaking smoothie shop, can give you a list of disgusting things going on regularly. Where I used to work, some closers wouldn't clean the ice tank properly and that shit had MOLD!! And they served people with moldy tank ice!!! And that's honestly not the worst of it. Please remember that a lot of food service workers are KIDS, TEENS! And then also remember that a lot of adults in general have poor hygiene practices (you could lose your mind counting the number of people who refuse to wash their hands after using the restroom or being out touching things all day). Long winded way to say, absolutely hit the mark on the racism and a lot of people just seem plain elated to have a chance to dunk on others rather than consider their own circumstances
@xxkre15225 ай бұрын
Indians just loooove to bring up "what about america" when people talk about their problems. You need to realize Americans are NOT the only ones who dunk on Indian street food and Indian hygiene in general. Yes, westerners like to yap about things they don't know, but a lot of the criticism I see are actually fellow asians who have had a real life first-hand experience with Indians and how unsanitary or inconsiderate "some of them" tend to be (and it's way more than just street food 😬). Obviously, blatantly racist stereotypes are wrong, but there's never smoke without fire. This "what-aboutism" that you and many Indians are doing is just a pathetic attempt at diverting attention and isn't really helping solve the problem.
@tobiisiba16415 ай бұрын
@@harashe1000 those show are created to highlight unhygienic practice and shame them, it also educate the American mass to advocate for more transparency on the affairs that goes on where their food comes from. What you are saying about western restaurant are not the norm this things are done in secret and hidden away from public eye and health officials if people now what goes on they wouldn't eat there, sure there is corruption and most of the restaurant owners get away with it, but the difference here is if western see the filth they wouldn't eat it while Indians see it and still choose to eat it. I have nothing against Indians but stop defending this shit it is pathetic.

The fact that you're acknowledging that the western world shines a light on their own unsanitary practices and is both disgusted by and ashamed of it is a foil for your giant cope of an argument. Same here. With three exceptions. 1`) I make my bed every morning. I wash the sheets frequently. I refuse to sleep in filthy. I refuse to wake up in filth. 2) I keep my bathroom neat and orderly. How can you clean yourself when your cleaning facility is filthy? 3) I keep my kitchen clean. It's a bit cluttered but what surfaces are available is clean enough to eat off. I clean my knives as soon as I use them. I clean my cutting board as soon as I'm done using them. You know where I got this habit? I ran a restaurant for two years. It's not just for hygiene. A serious cook needs a clear and clean cooking area. Your knives should be sharp and clean. Your cutting board should be oiled and maintained and clean. Your frying pans, if kept clean and seasoned, you don't need the toxic chemicals in the non-stick pans. A regular carbon steel or cast iron pan is even more non stick. It doesn't take longer to cook if you clean as you go, it actually makes it faster. That's why professional chefs get that habit and also mise-en-place. It's about saving time. So there's absolutely no reason why a street food stall shouldn't be sparkling clean. They are in Japan. They are in Malaysia. They are in Italy. Just not in India. It doesn't take time or money. It saves you time and disinfectant is a lot cheaper than poisoning customers and having to move your stall.

I love Indian food. I love Middle Eastern food. I love street food. When I was in Kuala Lumpur, I enjoyed a street shwarma. I got Pani Puri. You know what? The stalls that sold them were incredibly clean. The cooks wore clean aprons and there were no spilt food on the floor. No garbage piled up in the stall. When they chopped onions, they didn't just throw the skin on the floor. So it's not about the food. In Kuala Lumpur, the local authorities will shut you down if you run an unhealthy stall. If it's dirty, nobody will go there even if it's cheap and tasty. People expect cleanliness there. The same food stalls in India are pig sties. No. pigs are cleaner. The government lets them get away with it. The customers are used to filth and so don't see a problem. So when others point out that this is not right, you accuse us of racism instead of maybe taking the advise and cleaning up a little. Maybe then your average life expectancy wouldn't be 17 years less than Japan or 12 years less than Malaysia.

(it’s seriously the best chocolate, check it out if you ever have a chance.) My hometown in Alberta had a massive forest fire and tens of thousands of people were displaced. Groups of Syrian refugees raised money for the displaced people and their kids sent some of the toys they’d been given to the kids who’d lost everything. It broke my heart to read about it and still see such horrible things said about them. For some strange reason, I didn’t hear any hate against Ukrainian refugees when they started arriving in Canada. There were so many people ready and willing to sponsor Ukrainian families. Hm. I wonder why. (My lily-white Ukrainian ass has a theory.)

So I'm shocked that people are using this as an opportunity to be racist when they have never dealt with the lower classes' environment because they're more concerned on trying to survive. But, at the same time, I'm not shocked because the media promotes overconsumption and hyperindividualism which is really digusting. I hope more people will see this video and be more understanding. I’m in the feed of being served ppl prepping seafood on Insta as well as like, general recipes that include seafood or ingredients that are uncommon in the US. It’s really common to scroll to the comment section and see most or all of the comments saying that the food looks nasty or some uncreative form of that sentiment. And it is extremely frustrating to me every time - I always hope that the people who made the video (they are often reuploads) never actually sees those comments.
