The justice system is so screwed up in Korea as both victims who were sent to prison are simply “self defense”. The burglars broke into the pro fighter house and murdered his mom and sister then they attempted to kill him and defended himself. The student was brutally being beaten in class by a bully so he defended himself

Self defense is a weak defense for a crime in Korea. Some of their laws are really ridiculous. Every culture has a different interpretations of a crime.

All this movie tells foreigners is that South Korean directors believe the justice system they live under is corrupt and punishes people who defend themselves. I went to school with a kid like Seok Chan and watched faculty punish a student that this kid had bullied after that student had retaliated and defended themselves. The next week the faculty member was fired after the bully hospitalized another student and the video tapes from the first altercation were finally investigated. Both investigations found the bullied students not at fault for injuries they'd caused to the bully. If your reaction as a society is to side with Seok Chan, you deserve what he got, imo.

IMO the director of this movie is pretty much the same as any other directors of other movies from the same genre bout school, bully or justice system, whether theyre korean or not, they just want an exaggeration to attract viewers.. i think there are plenty enough of movies or tv series bout school bullying, unfair punishment, corrupt justice system etc made by various country all around the world xd But it could happen in reality in any country though, we just not realise it. We cant possibly knew what exactly happen in every single school even in our own country right xd

Sry don't agree. I've seen plenty of apocalyptic Korean movies where the characters are depicted correctly in appearances for their circumstances. Train to busan, flu, I am hero, peninsula etc. I can say though that Chinese movies always depict Chinese men as power hungry and Chinese women as being materialistic, gold diggers and home wreckers. They lack imagination these days. Always a mysterious CEO or rich relatives in the background to stop them being a target of being bullied by a less richer family. Just my observation. All in all I always prefer Korean drama and movies. Chinese movies aren't what it use to be, full of action and original story lines.

To further add to your statements, I would never imply hollywood movies are just super hero movies even if that's what I have consumed the most out of hollywood. There are so many great hollywood movies and for me to generalize them like that would be kind of dismissive of every one else who made great non super hero movies. Same applies to our movies too. Especially since there are different regions with different takes on their own movies with entirely different language [The argument isn't just for india, it can be applied for every country]. Like the op commenter (jasonloung?) referring to india for no reason would only apply to select few "popular" comedic bollywood movies while ignoring entirely different industries like the tamil movies and malayalam films. Especially with how scarily realistically they portray beggars(not just them ofc) or people who are in some sort of post apocalyptic societies. As a foreigner, every movie industries around the world has their weird goofiness if you selectively watch those goofy types of movies, while ignoring different genres within genres. Nothings wrong with doing that that until you generalize and decide your select few movie experiences is enough to stereotype a whole country's film industry

Self defence is usually very circumstantial. In the UK where I am, it is exceedingly rare, even in self defence situations to be able to kill someone and not go to jail. They view it as you should use the minimum necessary force if you have to defend yourself and if you have any opportunity to escape and choose not to, it's most likely not self defence. It's a bunch of crap, but if you kill someone in self defence, you have to prove it was the absolute only available option.

Err..No you're wrong, the one who work for the mob boss is Seok Chan. At the end of the movie when Woo Sol visited Do Hyun, they were talking about sharks because when Do Hyun trained Woo Sol he tell a story of how shark is always moving but Woo Sol said he visited an aquarium when he got out and saw actually Shark just sleeping and they both laugh it off.
