Watched this live and absolutely loved it. I'm not an artist, or a vtuber, and would love to see you do another one or even have it as a once a month thing. So many cool designs from the community, and your ideas were great. Loved when you'd pull out the red pen.

I really appreciated watching this while designing my own avatar -- the repeated advice of really leaning into the concept helped me a lot! I still think there are more ways to push my own design but I'm much happier with the changes I've made thanks to your advice! I see that you have a more recent video doing the same thing, I'll probably queue that one up next lol

I'll be adding to your critique as someone who works with illustration and character design as well. It's hard to describe without being able to show visuals, but I'll try: **TL;DR, overall, I see a pattern of people being kinda cautious about implementing more non-human designs on their demi-human characters, not quite aware of how to scatter themes across the design, and that a lot of people don't know about silhouette uniqueness and color harmony. How much these apply is pretty subjective.** 1:02:53 I think the clouds can stay with the water to make the image of a horizon, but the blue of the water can spread as a gradient on the bottom of the coat. Change the overall color scheme to make it more balanced rather than having just two large blue parts only at the bottom. When picking what colors to use for a character design, I think it's handy to have up to 3 or 4 colors, and list them in order of how prominent you want each to be from primary to accents. How you spread those colors across the design also affects the perception on them too. There's also saturation and whatnot that can affect the palette, but that's just going to be me explaining color theory. 1:12:44 I think a comfy hoodie would go well. I also *love* fancy outfits (especially vintage ones), but since the artist wants a casual look, I'm gonna prioritize that vibe for the character. The neck fluff looks too detailed and distracts a bit too much from the face, maybe a few stripes would do? 1:19:04 I agree, especially since most of the time, we'll be looking at the upper half. I think the ears can have fishy fins on the end. Kinda silly, but I first throught the blood was taiyaki filling. 1:23:20 Maybe make the blue a soft pastel kinda bluish/cool grey instead as well. If she wants tusks, look at the bangs. Maybe make the lower part of her bangs white and curved slightly like tusks too. 1:36:06 For the shoulder thing, maybe add epaulettes if the person still prefers having the arms exposed. In case anyone doesn't know, they're the shoulder pieces you see on prince suits like Prince Charming from Cinderella and some pirate designs have them too. 1:47:21 The simplistic scheme of just black and white instead of having greyscale parts actually feels more sleek and smoother. White and black technically aren't colors, but that fact makes them pretty versatile when combined with colors. Although, if they want to keep the gradients, I think it would be more effective to play with textures, though that would lessen the black slightly. 1:57:02 If the person wants to retain the color scheme, use the koi fish pattern to implement the character's colors on them, like watercolor-esque spashes on the clothes or body. Either that, or use the orange-y colors actual koi have. 2:16:15 This is just a timestamp for those who want a more monstrous/fantasy design for clothing. I think you can incorporate the punky look with unnatural elements with the outfit. 2:47:41 I think instead of having many ruffles, criss-crossing threads, and ribbons, go with cyborg-esque lines and joints that have the mood liquid color going around the body. I'm not sure how the hair's going to be posed, but I can't tell if the hair's default "pose" is just loose and down, or if it has its own constant animation like a Eris's hair from Sinbad. 2:57:17 As someone from a country where Catholicism is the major religion, aside from crucifixes, maybe a nun-like look but also not quite nun, if I'm making any sense- a nunsassin, without the habit. Maybe add a utility belt too. 3:30:27 "But the tail should be a little more flaccid than that." 3:42:08 **Flowiness also plays a part in overall silhouette shape. One of the things I noticed that's common among Vtuber or clients in general is that a lot of them aren't aware how much shape language can affect the impression on a character.** In this dragon design, the flowiness accentuates the graceful watery and elegant look. You can play around with different contours and shapes to achieve different feels for different characters. Points VS curves, squares VS ovals, etc. Putting two thematic shapes in the same character can help balance it out too. Speaking of shape language, the shape of the pupils also differ depending on the animal (or just make the pupils some other shape). Vertical slits are pretty common, second only to typical round human pupils in design. Horizontal slits are from goats and horses. Cuttlefish look like they have w-shaped pupils. Geckos's pupils are also pretty weird. Lae'zel from Baldur's Gate 3 have these vertical gecko pupils due to being a Githyanki. 4:11:05 Usage of different prints and patterns with crazy shapes can help make the design more clown too: stripes, pinstripes, spots, polkadots, etc. 4:14:10 Another underrated part of character design is eyelash shape, just play around with different curves, number of strands, different lengths, etc. The grouped strands on them can even be stylistically round. An example of this is, as much as I dislike the series and its sister series these recent years now, is Charlie from Hazbin Hotel. Her eyelashes are curved like butterfly wings around her eyes. Vivienne Medrano in general uses pretty unique eyelash shapes on her characters. A manga example would be Srajo from Made in Abyss with how the sharp points are spaced. 4:29:27 To add something about asymmetry, some of it helps a piece of art look more organic, like the lines of a piece of wood or the roots of a tree. Even your face has a bit of asymmetry to them. 4:48:15 Implementing more marine elements in general is pretty good. Nevy from Ava's Demon is a good example on marine-themed outfits. Fish tails also have pretty different shapes depending on the species. Interestingly, from what I observed at least, marine mammals like whales have horizontal tails. 5:16:17 Idk what the "serpentine light entity of destruction" is inspired by, but I somehow get Jörmungandr vibes. I think also adding the vibes of how the sun is a sheer force of destruction can give more destroyer vibes. Maybe add cracks or destroyed parts of the body too. 5:20:05 I think this is where soft shapes can come to play. Posing can play a part in showing naivety too. 5:27:50 I can tell this is kinda based on real armor because I swear I've seen that pattern before. The color of the cape has to be changed, I think. 5:42:29 When it comes to cartoons and anime, the more simplistic the style is, the more off-putting it is when you make it more detailed. 5:56:11 Maybe add something dark and flowy that makes her look more like a necromancer than typical cat goth girl as well as the undead theme going-on.

1:30:33 My suggestion for that would be to maybe incorporate the tusk into the outfit. Like how jowl suggested the trunk to be incorporated as the dress, the tusk could be incorporated into the dress like coming out from the side of the bust area to go down and curve at at hips to the center, making it look like a belt at that area but possibly also more elephant-ish
