Almost makes me cry that such a good show with a great ensemble cast and very nice production values only lasts 2 seasons, while crappy shows get decent or good ratings and have 4-6 season runs. Really shows how far our society has sunk, imho.

This pilot was the best in the series though. The rest of the episodes often involved recycling actors a lot, and then the actors themselves had a tendency to overact. That's what made it difficult to watch sometimes.

This entire series is gold. It should have won every award known in North America plus a few in the rest of the world if eligible. My thanks and congratulations to the casting personnel, actors, producer, writers, cinematographers, set decorators and wardrobe designers, the support staff and production crew plus anyone else I might have left out. Starting on my 4th viewing, I'm settling in for another marathon.

What an excellent TV series production! And with the 1940’s and 50’s ending that the good guys always win. It is a shame and disgrace that programs like this aren’t produced anymore, that Hollywood has been taken over by disgusting evil people. Golden Hollywood productions, I’m afraid, are a thing of the past. This Nero Wolfe production surprisingly lasted for 2 seasons. I am thankful for that and thankful to the person who uploaded their video to share here on KZbin.

Nero Wolfe is a television series adapted from Rex Stout's series of detective stories that aired for two (2) seasons on A&E. Set in New York City sometime in the 1940s-1950s, the stylized period drama stars Maury Chaykin as Nero Wolfe and Timothy Hutton as Archie Goodwin. A distinguishing feature of the series is its use of a repertory cast to play non-recurring roles. Nero Wolfe was one of the Top 10 Basic Cable Dramas for 2002. The series won praise for its high production values and jazzy score by Michael Small, and for preserving the language and spirit of the original stories. Most of the teleplays were written by consulting producer Sharon Elizabeth Doyle and the team of William Rabkin and Lee Goldberg, whose "Prisoner's Base" was nominated for an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America. A total of 20 episodes were produced over the two-season run. Eight of Stout's novels were adapted into two-hour broadcasts, while 12 of his short stories were filmed as one-hour episodes. (Source: Wikipedia) -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- A&E is an American basic cable network and the flagship television property of A&E Networks. The network was originally founded in 1984 as the Arts & Entertainment Network, initially focusing on fine arts, documentaries, dramas, and educational entertainment. Today, the network deals primarily in non-fiction programming, including reality docusoaps, true crime, documentaries, and miniseries. A&E launched on February 1, 1984, initially available to 9.3 million cable television homes in the U.S. and Canada.[2] The network is a result of the 1984 merger of Hearst/ABC's Alpha Repertory Television Service (ARTS) and (pre-General Electric merger) RCA-owned The Entertainment Channel (Source: Wikipedia)

I've watched several of these now-- all good!. But I've noticed the producers have taken some liberties with the main characters and some of their mannerisms. In the books, Archie smokes. Wolf does not disallow smoking in his home. Wolf's relation with Fritz is less caustic in the books. Cramer's character is spot on, however. The series (much too short), is brilliantly done-- adds a dimension to the books I hadn't thought of while reading them! Love it! Lament that it was only two seasons...

The ending here is much more touching than in Rex Stout's original book. Here Wolfe gives the boy's mother $5,000, one half of his fee honoring that agreement that he and young Pete were partners. Stout chose not to do that. Wolfe kept the entire $10,000 for himself.

@@Cheepchipsable - Two big reasons - - - 1) This is a film, an extremely visual medium. The other were published words, a medium that unfurls inside of one's head in the mind's eye. Entirely different medias! Adaptations are ALWAYS different. Even when the same author publishes words on a page, then adapts their own screenplay, it is ALWAYS different. Douglas Adams is a prime example of how that worked. Compare his books, radio dramas, TV shows, and his film. Many small differences coupled with some HUGE major differences. 2) If a screenwriter has a chance to make such a great improvement, they would be foolish not to do so. Perhaps the producer and director also had a hand in making the improvement. It helped humanize the Wolfe character a bit and provide closure to the audience regarding the little boy's mother. Win-win.
