These were the days of the stock acting troop. Like in Shakespeare's time. Along with a very low budget... Though Ms. Milinaire, one of France's first female producers, ended up marrying the Duke of Bedford and restored Woburn Abby into some prominence. American Sheldon Reynolds lead a consortium to acquire the rights to produce Sherlock Holmes films at auction. After this series in 1955 he did another in 1969-70 starring Geoffrey Whitehead. This series is often praised for it's Victorian feel, but it was filmed in France with only stock shots of British iconic sites.

SPOILER ALERT: . . The ending was not well done. Were she the ghost, she'd have enabled MacGregor to find the "treasure" that the castle portrait would have no need of sale. The "ghost" would most certainly have known the location of the treasure. But in that case there would be no story. So the ending intended to be mysterious and/or cute, was not well done. But still a very good episode.

I wonder why did they made the actor playing Lestrade play several different characters in the series ...did they seriously believe that the audience wont notice ? The entire series is top notch and the budget spent on this must be very high compared to TV shows of that time period so they could had easily got someone else to play these characters ....The thing is Archie Duncan plays Lestrade so well and like with every well played character the audience begins to associate the actor with the character and its a great shock to the audience's suspension of disbelief when things like this happen .

The 1st crush i had was in kindergarten & he was called "Doug." At 5 years old at Chrustmas time if should my parents have another child - a son - if they would call name him "Doug." I was so enamoured by my beloved kindergarten classmate, i wanted a little brother ti be named the same. My parents in a firm unison said an emphatic, "NO!" I remained a lonely, only child; no gift from my parents did i receive of a little sister or brother. I did not know "Doug" meant dog in Gaelic.
