The difference between Cyrus and others is that, you don't have to be a Persian to be proud of yourself when you learn about him, you'd feel proud simply as a human being from any part of the world with any ethnic background.

Surprisingly uplifting. These scholars and curators, with their enthusiasm for ancient Iranian culture, represent cosmopolitanism. That, to me, is the acceptance of value in diversity, and the growth of wisdom through good ideas from outside one's sphere. In other words, openness. I'm an American sad to have learned nearly half my countrymen disdain cosmopolitanism, as well as scholarship, openness, complexity, tolerance and "progress."

The Bible says the Jews would return to their homeland. They did. The only time in history this has ever happened for any group of people. The Bible says knowledge would increase in the latter days. It has. Most people have the largest library and access to news around the world via their phone. The Bible says the world would start to have labor pains like a woman with child. Earthquakes have been on the rise in the last two decades. The Bible says many would scoff just like the days of Noah. They do. Even Jesus crucifixion was prophesied before it happened - Psalms 22. That's just a few things of many. Time to get save in the name of Jesus Christ, aka Yeshua Ha Mashiach.

Just wondering - Was the cylinder made to press into other clay to "copy" the decree or was it just one of the objects created with his message?
@zagrebblues9894
@zagrebblues9894 7 жыл бұрын
The latter, although it was meant to be a unique object. Cuneiform writing consists of grooves pressed into clay, resulting in a relief-like surface, so if you wanted to reproduce text you would first need a negative master copy. This one isn't a negative (and I'm certainly no expert but I never heard of Persians doing this). It is merely a piece of clay shaped like a cylinder which was created as a foundational deposit, i.e. its purpose was to be buried underneath the foundations of the main temple in Babylon dedicated to Marduk, which is why it talks about Cyrus as a benefactor restoring destroyed temples, even if those temples belong to peoples he conquered. It was never meant to be actually read by contemporary people, it was buried under the building as sort of a message to Marduk, the deity of the temple.

@kev googlestein what? No. They did not invent relief printing. This is not that.
@MTerrance
@MTerrance 5 жыл бұрын
That was my first thought, but the cylinder is not flat but bowed, so it could not be used as a master mold. The second thought is what if was used tomimprint on papyrus using ink, but there is no evidence of ink on the cylinder as far as I know. It would be ironic if the cylinder were "cleaned" removing all traces of ink, but there is no evidence of that either. Finally, suppose it was actually a negative? Again, no evidence of that as far as I know. One final question: how did the scribe keep the clay wet enough to work on the entire cylinder? If it were rotated as it was worked it would seem the side lying on a surface would be flattened as it was rolled to expose the fresh (unmarked) surface. If the cylinder was built up row by row and not rotated until the already completed rows were sufficiently dry to avoid the pressing out of completed rows as they moved to the bottom of the cylinder, there should be evidence of the fresh clay meeting the already dry rows. I wonder if anyone has tried to figure that out.

Mene mene tekel, upharsin. There is no end to the brilliance that was Cyrus. He was an amazing man. Sadly for us modern people, there is very little known about him. Yes his people were literate and had the written word, but the destruction of following millenia has exacted a terrible price Suffice it to say, his reign was a model for the (much later) Greek democracies. It suggests that there were incredible thinkers and civilizations that preceded him, all with a more humane bent than what followed. After Cyrus passed away, his empire went to far lesser men who gradually eroded and corrupted it until the time of Darius 3, who was defeated by Alexander. Actually, his generals murdered him, which is another story. Along with the destruction of Persepolis. Nice to see a great video about him.

Darius III and other Achaemenid kings did not corrupt or erode the EMpire, they empowered it. Darius III wasn't defeated by Alexander either, he was killed before there was a conclusion to the battles, not to mention several Persians defeated Alexander already. The Greeks did not practice democracy so much so as they did slavery. The Persian civilisations were far superior than any Greek ones, especially under Darius III who was far more patient and reasonable and decisive than his enemy. Do note, he is the first Achaemenid king who appointed a satrap for Persepolis, that reigned terror on Alexander and his feeble-minded strategies (and men). Noah fathered three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Shem is the father of all Semites. Jacob/Israel is the father of all Jews. This is not mutually exclusive as Jacob is one of Shem's descendants through Abraham, and Isaac. Abraham is the ancestor of a huge percentage of all the people on the Earth. Noah, and Adam are ancestors of every living human, along with Eve, and Noah's wife. Now there are other lines of descent from Shem, Ham, and Japheth's wives that are routinely ignored. The kids' wives carried the genes of the Nephilim and Annunaki, that were later expressed in people like Goliath, and Og of Bashan.

Glad to see that they acknowledge that history is written by the victors. Brings Armenia to mind. Many past scholars and even now say that Armenia is the missing link to Mesopotamian history... According to Xenophon’s ‘Cyropaedia’, the King of Armenia has been discovered trying to wriggle out of all his obligations to his over-lord. Forced to submitted himself for trial before Cyrus, the King stands to lose everything, wealth, army, family and life. His son, Tigranes, pleads his case with such philosophical skill and frank acknowledgement of guilt, that Cyrus restores the whole family to his favour. The King of Armenia stands in the centre with his head bowed and his arms crossed, at the head of a deputation of followers; his son, Tigranes, interceding between the King and Cyrus (enthroned to the right), has thrown off his turban, which lies at his feet. The hero of the story is certainly Tigranes, who impresses his wife by offering to give his life to preserve her freedom; it is for this reason that she has eyes only for him (sitting behind her mother-in-law in the carriage). The three principal characters seem to be dressed as King, warrior and philosopher. Not to mentions the 1915 genocide of 1.5 million which was 3/4 of there entire global population. With there ancient Homeland know as the land of 1001 church's. The great cliff top city fortress of Ani.. City of Van, which has a submerged Ancient Armenian Church all destroyed with only a hand full still standing. These churches were built in cliff and mountains and recently discovered over 800 underground rooms and monastery.. how have we not looked in Armenia like we do everywhere else... It is home to Mt Ararat, biblical Noah's Ark resting place... Which after the genocide so much of the ancient Homeland was stolen by Turkey. So when there is any talk about this area, it is always refered to as Ancient Turkey.. Turkey is Not even a century old, Armenias have been there for thousands of years...

Does it matter to anyone that Daniel, as an historical document (referenced herein), is completely discredited, as the relevant portions were written c.165 BCE? Or that much of the Jewish backstory was manufactured by people like Ezra and his priests following the pattern gleaned from their exposure to the ancient Sumerian to Babylonian mythological documents upon their return to Jerusalem (including the flood, creation, garden, Babel, Moses, and Job stories)?

For example the 3rd temple being rebuilt, Trump being places on a coin over Cyrus, what seems to be Satanic symbolism in media and so much more. The question is why? Is it because God is real or is it because everyone wants to think God is real some everyone is playing out their own plans for their Gods. Daniel 6:1 KJV It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; 2 And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel [was] first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage. 3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit [was] in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. 4 Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he [was] faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. 5 Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find [it] against him concerning the law of his God. 6 Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever. 7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. 8 Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not. 9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree. 10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. 11 Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God. 12 Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask [a petition] of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing [is] true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not. 13 Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which [is] of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day. 14 Then the king, when he heard [these] words, was sore displeased with himself, and set [his] heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him. 15 Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians [is], That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed. 16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast [him] into the den of lions. [Now] the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee. 17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel. 18 Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him. 19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. 20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: [and] the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? 21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. 22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. 23 Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. 24 And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast [them] into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den. 25 *Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. 26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he [is] the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion [shall be even] unto the end. 27 He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions. 28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.*

@ what she says is factually incorrect but an easy mistake to make. In the Hebrew bible silver is often quantified in shekels, so these words appear together as šql-ksp ("shekel kesef", weights of silver). Shekel drives from a semitic root denoting weight (Hebrew and akkadian š-q-l, aramaic t-q-l, Arabic ṯ-q-l). Silver has its own root (Hebrew, akkadian and ugaritic k-s-p)

Bullshit. She didn't say "the Hebrew word for silver, shekel", but "the Hebrew word for Silver Shekel". That's a difference, and you can even hear that she means the latter because the accentuation carries the meaning. Basically this is like insisting that "Pound" is not the name of a currency: Technically correct, but ultimately embarrasingly pointless. You tube comment with a degree, congrats.

@@casperbetz1949 except she's talking about the etymology of siglos which derives from shekel. Silver precedes it to highlight the use of a bimetallic standard. Your interpretation makes no sense because the word is already shekel, not "the Hebrew word for silver-shekel". This phrasing isn't just awkward but again incorrect, as there was no such word nor indeed such a thing distinctly at the time in the Hebrew sphere. It wasn't the name of currency until roughly five centuries later.

At 1:30 "Cyrus's conquest of Babylon had been predicted, and was described in the old testament, by the jewish prophet Daniel." Well. How to begin unpacking this claim? Leaving to one side the bold assumption that the old testament prophecies are matters of historical fact (!!!), perhaps we might begin by noting that Daniel is not recognised as a Prophet in Judaic literature, however he is considered one by Islamic scholars, and by Christians. At Matthew 24:15, we find: "When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)" Now, the "writing on the wall" that Daniel is said to have deciphered did not foretell the conquest of Babylon by Cyrus. Rather, it foretold that Darius the Mede would take the kingdom. At Daniel 5:30-31 we read: "That very night Belshazzar the Chaldean (Babylonian) king was killed, and Darius the Mede received the kingdom." It is immensely curious that the British Museum is presenting Daniel as a Judiac prophet, and also arbiter of historical fact. It is further curious that the folks doing so haven't actually read the bible, from which they determine these historical facts. This is profoundly shameful scholarship, given the illustrious heritage of the institution.

@Toby Stewart, True, Daniel was a prophet, but he certainly was not Jewish. Being Jewish, is defined as, ""Wishing to be a Jew, or Wishing to become a Jew.""Those who Jesus was referring to in the book of Revelation, Chapter 2:9, and 3:9. He told them there are some who say they are Jews, but are not, but are the ""Synagogue of Satan."" Were they suppose to build Israel, before God said so. Are those in Israel waiting for their Messiah? Who is their Messiah? I've known since childhood my Saviors name was, ""JESUS."' Being a musician and singer, I've sang about this JESUS, all of my life, and repented every time I got drunk. I'd even cried out to Jesus, and lied, told Him I'd never take another drink, LIAR. Eventually, I did! Why are Christian Zionist pastors, not preaching against this doctrine. They preach old, and new testament, but the time line is not right, and I'm not a pastor, but I can read. The Messiah has already come, His name is Jesus (Yahshua), He's coming on a cloud, just as He said. You who are waiting for new information about Messiah, count your self as dung, because, "Jesus is the only Messiah, accept Him in your hearts now, because He might return, (NOW). No time to ponder, it's life or death, choose ye this day, who ""CAN"" Save you, and who ""CAN'T""!!! Keep looking up at the, LOTTERY amount you can win, but you'd better look up for Jesus first, then the......................LOTTO Pay no tithes, give an offering, God is good, all the time, and all the time, God is good. (we say Yahwey also).

The more amazing part was when Cyrus upon defeating the Babylonians, came to the court and all the courts officers and officials were gathered. He was surprised to see that there were also hebrews in Babylon. Upon meeting Daniel, who had been given the Babylonian name Belteshazzar, He was informed that the Hebrews had been expecting him for the last few decades. He was shown the prophesy by isaiah in chapter 45, specifically naming him as being the Lord's anointed to save the children of Israel in captivity. That too, is preserved in the Bible.

11:56 The Cyrus Cylinder tells us that Cyrus is governed, led by the God of Babylon Marduk, the Hebrew Bible tells us that it was the God of Israel who governed Cyrus who conducts him through the whole military campaign and so what we have in the Cyrus Cylinder put beside the Hebrew Bible, the book of Chronicles, the book of Ezra are two different priestly interpretations of the same military campaign. It suggested that the Hebrew scriptures must be part of a much bigger Middle Eastern religious tradition.
@PeloquinDavid

What it suggests, in my view, is that Cyrus was a masterful propagandist who was VERY happy to be "adopted" by the gods of not only his ennemies but (more importantly) of his enemies' enemies whom he treated with particular favour, thereby guaranteeing him their good will - and "positive press" that has lasted over two and a half millennia (and counting) in the West. Assuming he wasn't a totally cynical manipulator (we'll never know the truth, of course), there's not much doubt that he himself would have been a thoroughly devout Zoroastrian and, given his successes until the fateful day he died, would have had no reason to doubt that he enjoyed the favour of Ahura Mazda...
