It is a nice bridge, but I am not sure how much added value this bridge has.. 250m to the east there is already a 2 lane vehicle bridge with a separate bike path, which is the shorter route to Eindhoven for most people of Oirschot. I don't know how busy/unpleasant that bridge is, but I would guess that most people would keep using that route, although I hope of course this new one will be used a lot..
@Cl0ckcl0ck4 жыл бұрын
250? Try 50. But I'm sure this bridge got the greenlight because they have plans for the other one. (Plans not beneficial to cyclist btw.) Cyclist are soon getting screwed off from the Princess Irene Brigade Bridge (why the make the link with the new bridge) and nobody will care because they got this new expensive bridge recently. :') Brabant is the Italy of the Netherlands, there's always some corruption in any plan.
@hendrikdependrik18914 жыл бұрын
It's quite common in the Netherlands to have both direct connections and less direct connections through greenery. Nature is a destination by itself and people avoid traffic, because traffic noise can be quite tiresome. The greenery also protect the cyclists against headwinds.

I wonder how the deck will hold with rain and snow. I would think over time it will be very slippery. And with a ramp and corner it can become dangerous if it becomes slippery. So brandspanking new it's nice on the eyes though.

@remkojerphanion46864 жыл бұрын
For a span of just 40 metres, you need a 280 meter bridge. I like the design, but it takes up an enormous amount of space.
@mennoltvanalten72604 жыл бұрын
That is mostly to make it a bike bridge. Since bicycles are powered by muscles it is a lot harder than with a car to go uphill. For that reason you will always need a long ramp or noone will use the design. And it isn't like car bridges don't have it too... The 'Airbornebrug' that carries thye A2 over the Wilhelminakanaal is a whopping 290 meters long*, basically just as long but laid out in a line. Sadly the wikipedia article 'lijst van bruggen over het wilhelminakanaal' doesn't have any other bridges with their own page and their length listed, so from these two examples I must guess that is just normal. * nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbornebrug

Though of course the path would be a bit windy because of ramps. Random dude: Alright, a bridge where the bridge crosses the river with that line. I will send it to be planned. Planner 2, in a company completely unrelated to planner 1: Why do they want the bridge deck to be like that directly in front of the streets? Don't they see we will need a ramp and that will make it terrible? Ah well, we are getting good money, lets throw a ramp like this and it'll be okay I guess

The use of wood for the decking is nice for aesthetics but terrible for maintenance. The top deck will get slippery very easily (unless you put a top coating over it or very uncomfortable anti-slip strips, making the whole aesthetics thing useless) and the bridge will no doubt get noisy after a bunch of years because of wear.
@RainyRaven4 жыл бұрын
We do have a lot of these types of bridges in the Netherlands. Using wood isn't new by any means. I've cycled on them many times and haven't had any issues with slippery surfaces (except when it's snowing). I don't want to sound dismissive but here it rains a lot. A designer would've definitely taken that into account. And what noise exactly? The slight creaking of a bridge when 20 cyclists pass doesn't even compare to one car or lorry driving by your house. :)
@Pfooh4 жыл бұрын
It's very common in the netherlands, and never causes real issues. Not sure how they do it, maybe some special type of lumber. It's actually a really old concept, we had a bridge like this close to my home over 30 years ago, so i don't think it's artificial wood. It's likely the same stuff they build children's playgrounds with..
@Cl0ckcl0ck4 жыл бұрын
In the Netherlands we don't do 'build and forget' infrastructure. You can be sure this bridge will get inspected every year and serviced (if needed) every year. Mostly because that the cheapest way of maintaining your infrastructure.
@MrAronymous4 жыл бұрын
@@Cl0ckcl0ck I know. But wooden beams still take more maintenance to remain as comfortable. I'm saying this because I'm comparing Dutch wooden bridges and Dutch non-wooden decked bridges..
@MrAronymous4 жыл бұрын
@@RainyRaven Sure, the wood can be treated entirely with a top coating. But as you can see in the video, that's not the case. They've used glued on anti-slip strips. Those will not last forever, and still leave a majority of the surface exposed to the wood. And the noise I'm talking about is wear and tear in the construction. As it gets used more and more, the wood will begin to wear and little gaps between the screws will arise, making planks a little looser. And the planks themselves will wear around the edges of the planks, making the surface bumpier. Both resulting in rumbling sounds as you drive over it. I'm not talking out of my ass, I've experienced it many times (in the Netherlands). You can keep coming up with excuses, but the fact is that a non-wooden surface would have lasted (more comfortably) for longer. I've seen them having to replace the wooden decking on the same bridges way too much. And it smells like sweaty feet every time they do it. I don't mind them using wood on other parts of the bridge, but using it on the decking just isn't smart.
