Hi Kevin. Bought my Souris River 16' Prospector from the good people in Atikokan 3 years ago. It replaced my 27 year old Nova Craft Prospector. 39 Lbs vs 65 lbs is like a new beginning!!! Like you I am typically a solo paddler and tripper. The only mods I did were that I found the bow seat was at an uncomfortable angle for a reverse solo paddler so shimmed the front portion of the seat to a more comfortable reverse angle. Also I replaced their thwart with a kneeling thwart which puts you about 6 inches closer to centre for those really windy days. I just love this canoe. Congratulations and enjoy.

Thanks Water Walker, some good ideas there. A kneeling thwart is an interesting idea.

Hi Jon, so far I love it although I have just had it out on a couple of day trips. We have a Q18.5 that we used a lot when the kids were small and it behaves similarly. It is very light and sits high in the water when not loaded, so it should be great on trips. I turn 49 in Sept. and realized that my next boat needed to be a light one. 🙂 I am slammed at work right now but I hope to get out in Aug and Sept for a few backcountry trips with it. Beauty canoe with the right weight for an aging back! Driving a Swift Keewaydin 15' for solo and it's great for 3-5 days trips which is all the time I ever have anyway but do miss the primary stability of the Prospector. . . . though love how amenable it is to the kayak paddle for the long stretches of paddling. You can buy yoke pads from Wildnerness Supply or MEC that form fit and secure with velcro, work great.

Congrats Kevin. I only ever had the pleasure of paddling rental Souris Rivers but they were a joy to portage. The 16' seems to be the sweet spot of their fleet. Best of luck. Congratulations, Kevin! What a beautiful boat, and I am sure you will create memories that last a lifetime on your various adventures with this canoe. I will be interested to hear about your impressions, as I am considering this along with the Swift 16 Prospector and 16 Keewaydin. All great boats but most importantly, since I am 59 and although quite fit, my achey back demands a lightweight boat moving forward, that's for sure!
@KevinOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Yes all great boats. This Quetico model has 2" of rocker and is 16'2" it should be faster than most prospectors on flat water and so therefore a little more efficient over the course of a day than a prospector with more rocker. My old boat is a Swift Algonquin 16 and I liked to but it is significantly heavier, although that boat is more than 20 years old and I am sure the newer models are lighter. I find it hard to believe that mine is rated at 42 lbs it feels much lighter. One thing that keeps the Souris RIver boats lighter is that there is no gel coat on their boats the kevlar is very thin and flexible. To keep the shape of a canoe they reinforce the bottom. Having the seats riveted to the side of the boat also ads stability to the shape.

Ive been looking for a new canoe . What was the price and where did u get it ? why did you go with the quetico and not the prospector ?
@KevinOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, I ordered it through Wilderness Supply but you can order directly from Souris River. They have pricelists on their website. The Quetico models are very popular and I have paddled them before. We also own a Quetico 18.5 which was great when the kids were little. The Quetico isn't much different than the Souris RIver Prospector The Quetico 16 is 16'2" with 2" rocker. The Prospector 16 is 16' with 4" rocker. They have the same width. Both are excellent boats but in flat water the Quetico should be a little faster.

Hi Kevin, I just purchased the same canoe and noticed some areas that appear to have a lack of epoxy on the finish exposing the texture of the kevlar. Did you notice any such thing on your canoe?

Hello Kevin . My name is Gail and threw my reasherch you were the one that was recimended for advise . Please excuse the spelling . I was wondering if I could dehydrate my meals and store them in jars ? And if you know about how long they would be shelf stable?
@KevinOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gail, dehydrated food can be kept in jars especially if you have a vacuum sealer for them. How long they last depends on a lot of variables including how well you dehydrated the food, how completely you removed the fat, how airtight, cool and out of the sunlight they are kept.

Hi Kevin, I saw your FB post regarding SR’s hiring practice. To think I was seriously considering calling them this week to enquire about a SR Q16. If you had a do over, which manufacture(s) and models would be at the top of your list?
@KevinOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, in my mind Swift and Nova Craft make excellent boats and I have paddled in both. Esquif is also very popular especially among white water paddlers. I also hear very good things about Clipper, but I haven't been in one. I hear nothing but good things from all these manufacturers. I could go on about models, but if you are looking for a similar lightweight boat that would replace this one I would look at the array of boats that Swift makes. As I say in the video Souris River makes great boats but if you put one beside a Swift there is no comparison in the quality and attention to detail that the Swift provides. The Souris River is a good well running pick-up truck that holds gear and drives well. The Swift boats offer the same utility but the seats, gunwhales, fit and feel are superior.

Great looking boat Kevin! I’m looking t getting a tandem canoe myself . I may look into the quetico 17 instead of the 16. Your choice on getting the 16, is it based on using it for solo paddling? What options do you recommend with the boat? Where did you buy your boat . I!m in Montreal QC area . Not sure if they!re dealers in Quebec. Thanks again for sharing and for all your hard work you have been putting out these last few months😉👍
@KevinOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick, Yes I got the Q16 so that I can solo some of the time. If I was going to always be in a tandem situation I would choose the Q17. It is just a little bigger and a little faster when you are tandem. Finding a Souris River dealer near Montreal may be an issue. You probably want to give the company a call and inquire about transport.
