I grew up in New York State and spent at least half my early life (thru teens) walking around barefoot. Happy memories of popping cooled tar bubbles at the edges of the streets and lush grass, local beach sand, and even some muddy areas. An occasional stubbed toe was my only enemy-probably walking too fast.

I worry that the children’s feet will spread & when it is time to wear shoes it could be very difficult.

Kitty my mother grew up during the American "Great Depression" & by necessity, she had no shoes except those that were handed down 2-3 times from her older sisters. She was born the year the stock market crashed, they lived in the country & farmed & foraged, and hunted so they never starved. But shoes were seen as a luxury until each child went to school & during the winter to keep warm. They also saved their best clothes for church and school. Let's just say all eight children tanned very well every summer. She once almost walked into a tangle of snakes barefoot & as it was a narrow path near a watering hole & she knew they were water moccasins she simply backed up & took a running leap over them. When you grow up in the country you learn what is truly dangerous & what isn't. If the snakes had been rattlesnakes she would have backed up & retraced her steps. Yes, she had wide feet, but not more than what wide shoes would accommodate. Her feet became like leather in the summer & like John said softened in the winter. I was allowed to go barefoot as a child and did so until we moved to Indonesia when I was twelve. Only because our family doctor insisted, did I wear shoes outside, because he claimed there were tropical parasites in the soil that westerners were not accustomed to. But I continued to go barefoot indoors. I still go barefoot when I garden and I'm in my 60s. I think Tara is on to something about our spiritual connection to the earth. And bathing is also a good idea. I have Chronic Lyme, so I'm not naive about tick-borne diseases or other potential diseases. But neither can we live in a sterilized bubble. It's all a balancing act between risk and freedom ...or danger & joy. 😉☺❣~Tara (Kidndlydude's wife) @@Kitty_cat2001

Never let anyone question the way you're raising your kids, or at least don't take it to heart. You two are amazing parents, and your kids are living an idyllic life. You're wonderful. Keep doing as you're doing, and don't let busybodies get you down. There are so many people who don't wear shoes. It's absolutely no cause for concern. Oh, and I think it's weird to ask someone for photos of their kids' feet. Ew. What is wrong with people?

Hi, I was raised on a farm and walked around without shoes on and learned quickly where not to. I watched out for the “pickies” (thistles). As an adult, I still walk around in my bare feet while I am gardening, and walking on my grass. Greetings from Peterborough, Ontario 🇨🇦

That is how we build our own natural immune system. It's not that we should go out of our way to drink dirty water with bacteria and parasites in it like many of the poorer countries in the world sadly do(not by choice). But staying in a sterilized bubble is also not a healthy way to live. If we are never exposed to the natural environment our immune systems can never develop the defense systems we need when assaulted by more dangerous diseases. Both these babies have been/are being breastfed & probably have better immune systems than 2/3 to 3/4 of children in the west whose mothers found it too inconvenient to give their children nature's super-charged immunity (by breastfeeding) and thus give them the best start in life. @@miephoex

Omg. What is wrong with people?! Seriously asking for pictures of the bottom of Crusoe’s feet? I can’t even. I grew up in the country on a gravel road and I spent all summer, every summer, without shoes. There was a little country store at the end of the road and I would walk down that gravel road to the store all the time, collecting any empty soda bottles that I could turn in for $.02 each. You’re great parents. Plus, children walking barefoot is good and helps with their arches. Tara, I love your shirt.

When I was a kid growing up in Rhodesia, I did cross-country running through the bush, ALWAYS barefoot and always came first! If I was made to wear tekkies, I couldn't finish the race. Walking barefoot is the best way to ground yourself and as Tara quite rightly explains, alignment of the spine and it also prevents foot damage from shoes as you're walking correctly without shoes.

In defense of the Newbys...I and my three brothers grew up in the mountains of California. We had horses, creeks, wild animals like snakes etc., and spaces. We never wore shoes in the summer. We climbed trees, hiked, and rode the horses for hours. No one was ever harmed. I am 70 years old now and still never wear shoes when I am at home. I am also still a working professional. I have no problem wearing shoes at the office. These boys will be just fine. I also have to say it really is a personal family matter. They have a wholesome life, and those who complain should worry about their own families.

I grew up in the country, the last day of school meant being free for the Summer. It was the day the shoes came off and were forgotten and the feet were free. We climbed trees, roamed in the woods, walked to the beach on hot pavement and loved every minute of it. I now live in Arizona where children don't go shoeless because of cacti, scorpions and fire ants. I feel sad for what they are missing and I feel JOY for Caruso's freedom. Your family is a pure delite. Dee : )

I’m so happy you are growing a fall garden 🤗 It’s easier than a summer garden When you asked if tomatoes and peppers were perennials I yelled at the screen “YES they are!”in a climate where you don’t get a hard freeze. Move your peppers/eggplant etc. in the greenhouse to overwinter. Raised planter beds in the greenhouse is a great idea Drill holes in the bottom and line with garden cloth to hold in the soil. I’ve grown celery, lettuces, leafy greens such as broccoli, collards, cabbage, chard, kale, spinach etc.,all the root vegetables such as carrots, rutabagas, radishes, turnips etc., herbs, onions garlic in a fall garden ( seed packets usually say if varieties are cold tolerant) Plant berry bushes and elderberry now if want Scatter wildflower seeds now and they’ll be up early in spring Plant asparagus and artichokes in February ( leave space for them) if you want them Asparagus takes about three years before you can harvest from but is so good and artichokes are a bit of a space hog but are prolific and tasty and If any are allowed to flower the bright blue flowers are a bee magnet 🧲🐝 Make compost tea with your “weeds” to water with It’s “free” fertilizer Barefoot gardening is great and good for you( grounding)!😊🦶

We raised 4 barefoot children out in the country. They had the same rosy cheeks , bright eyes and love of the outdoors. They were all very healthy and active. Currently they are 4 very successful, prosperous adults who have also raised barefoot children. However, they do love expensive shoes and own a lot of them. Could that be from going barefoot in their formative years? We may never know. Relax. These little boys are obviously well cared for and very healthy. Well done.

Oh wow! Crusoe’s feet are fine! I grew up on our family farm and ran around barefoot all my life! Yes, when going to town I put shoes on. I did that until I had to work and wore shoes more which made my feet more soft. Stickers are a thing of life, continue pull them out and carry on. He’s a healthy, happy boy. Y’all are doing a great job being parents! Hugs, love, and lots of prayers for your family and farm from Texas!

I grew up in Africa. None of us kids wore shoes(except to school). We would go to school and put them on,, come home and ‘kick them off’. And immediately! We never thought twice about it. Keep going Crusoe, if you are lucky enough to live in a place where you can go barefooted and that,in my opinion, is a precious gift in so many many ways. I’m with you Tara, the energy from the earth is a blessing and a gift and is right there for us all. Why not connect with it. And with our bare feet!

Very productive vlog. I am so happy to see more of Joao today. He has a nice personality and lovely smile. He is such an asset and knows so much about land. Your boys stole the show. I am all for your second channel. Tara I have requested this before, when you mention lunch I would like to see you all sit and have lunch. Not just work work work and work. It will be interesting to see you eat everything you harvested also.

The sheep were a nice surprise. Crusoe walking in bare feet is totally fine. It works for him. It is also good for balance. When and if he hurts himself walking barefoot, he will remember to wear his shoes. Good to see John working with wood. The planter boxes look great. Tara, you and Joel made a huge compost. That will be great for the garden. Joel and family are all part of your family now. Keep well. Lots of love to you all.❤

Don't forget to add paper and chopped up cardboard to the compost. The big pile was a great idea Tara. OMG Sawyer was walking, so cute. Sheep poop is also good for compost and around garden beds. Never throw away old wheelbarrows. They make great planters for flowers or vegetables and you can wheel them to where you want them.Walking barefoot is good for the feet and connecting to the energy in the ground of Terra (earth) ☺💖☺

I grew up in Bermuda and spent my childhood running around barefoot and survived and thrived! Regarding oleander, we had a huge hedge of them along our property and we just grew up knowing not to touch them! Having an inside growing space through the winter will be wonderful. I would try starting some tomatoes because you never know until you try if something will work! For outside you could do broccoli, carrots and maybe peas depending on how cold it gets as well as all those good things you mentioned! I will be living vicariously over here in Canada under snow and minus temperatures! I did see last week's special sneak peak and I'm waiting anxiously to subscribe!!❤

Tomato’s are an annual but you can over winter peppers and tomatillos in the green house. For planting outside try mooli/daikon radish they are good in stir fry’s and also help to break up hard soil. You only have to look at your boys to see that you are getting the parenting right, both are confident and happy, Crusoe’s vocabulary and articulation are wonderful ❤️

Never feel that you have to defend anything about your parenting style. I'm so jealous of Crusoe. If I could run around that place barefoot all day, eat from that garden, learn from you two and the neighbors, play with chickens and Sawyer, I'd be one happy kid! You teach that boy every day to be brave, think big, and explore, which I believe was exactly what you intended, and that's a parenting success in my book ❤

We grew up on a farm in Queensland in the 50s & 60s with dairy cattle, chooks, pigs. We never, hardly ever anyway, wore shoes. We worked in the dairy milking cows, barefoot. We sloshed thru mud (with cow pee and poo in it) up past our ankles. We even walked to and from school, usually barefoot, over gravel and bitumen roads (no snow and ice though but we did pop bubbles in the tar on the road in summer). We stubbed our toes, we got prickles, we survived without too many issues.

One thing you need to think about is; when the new(by) house is on paper - do NOT forget the big space for a sauna! Things you can grow in the garden; more berries, rhubarbs, ice cream (?) and some money trees! Have a good one. Love from us 💗

Very well said about why Crusoe likes to go bare footed, but how sad you even have to explain it to viewers, they are evidently living under rocks. To be bare footed on a regular basis is just so good for you. All the very best with your venture. Love, health and peace, Gail Czech Republic ❤️

The good thing having the compost area bigger, is that if you ever get a little tractor with a loader, you can use that to turn the compost - so so much easier….! We have gone from one pallet wide to two pallets wide for this reason.

When we were kids in Rhodesia, we went barefoot everywhere, we even cycled our bikes barefoot and only wore shoes going to town or school. Do not be concerned about Crusoe's or Sawyers feet, they have the best foot wear, leather feet, barefoot is the best. I cannot believe people are concerned about a kid running around barefoot, it is natural for kids to run around barefoot. How is John's shoulder? Little Sawyer walking now is so cute and seeing his triumphant smile at the end of it. John and Tara I would drill holes through the plastic and the wood in your raised beds to help drain the water. Have a great week end.
