HOSTAS are easy to geow but needs everyday watering. Also they do go dormant in the fall and winter seasons. Add a good slow-release fertilizer or a 10-10-10 granular fertilizer.

Yes those two are biennials. They green up 1st year, flower the second. Foxglove are the same. The green will die down in the winter too - so don’t pull them out thinking they’ve failed.

It's the same with lupins, it's only in the second year that they flower, but they grow enormously from the first year on, they become bushes.😅

I love the sound of birdsong in the background. No traffic sounds. Paradise. Two lovely young boys. I pray these times and the blessings of these times in your lives are etched into your memories for years to come. Your parents (grandparents) must be overjoyed to be able to have regular glimpses into the adventure you are on. Children grow so quickly and it will be so neat to have these films to look back on.

One more thing- cover areas that you want weed free like around the greenhouse with cardboard boxes flattened out/ no tape, and then cover them with mulch or gravel and you will be basically weed free for a couple of years. If you use mulch, when it’s time to repeat, just lay the new cardboard over the old! You can use this method in flowerbeds as well- just cut a hole where you want your plant to grow! Hollyhocks grow tall- not a shrub Squeeze those babies!!❤

Is there anything better than luxuriating in the joyous sensation of strolling barefoot in a thick, beautifully green lawn… even better sitting, or dare I say, lying back… free from prickles, thorns etc. I remember my daughters, when suffering from nappy rash… lying them on our backyard lawn in mid morning sunshine… their gurgles of delight… and the rapid healing…. sigh! memories 😊 I love that you take such pleasure from your lawn, that you invested your time and physical hard work, I can say, from experience, your children, like mine, who are now adults, will love you because of those memories 💕 I feel so fortunate that I discovered your YT channel, I wish you all the best in realising your dreams xx

John just to let you know, Holly hocks will flower in the second year. So get ready next year. Look for a plant called mallow, it’s self does and it flowers from mid summer to frost.

Lupines are the beautiful provincial flower of Nova Scotia! They are especially found growing alongside our highways in a variety of colours, especially purple/mauve. They come up every spring and summer…..they are not biennials. Hope you have better luck with your lupines! 😊

How wonderful that Tara was able to grow up surrounded by nature in Africa. And now, little Crusoe & Sawyer can follow that tradition as she & John homestead in Portugal. I think that John has the right idea - certainly some movement is preferable to none. Working shorter carpenter hours seems like a good balance. The lawn looks amazing! considering our record heat summer.

Hi John, when I had a back and neck injury I bought a back and shoulder brace that was recommended by the physiotherapist and it helped me tremendously. Just like you, I had to work to support my family and I didn’t have any other option. I also purchased an ointment called Traumeel which is homeopathic and it’s quite amazing. I hope this helps. No surprise perrenials planted from seed did not bloom. Lupine is spring fliwering, so watch in the spring. Most plants need a year to establush. Often the root systems are growing which is important for future seasons. Love the brothers together!

If you cut hydrangea flowers when in full colour, stand them in an inch of water in a darkish place and let the water evaporate they will reward you with beautiful dried flowers.i also cut and dry allium heads, grasses, lavender, larkspur for the winter months to cheer me up. Allium heads sprayed, white, silver or gold make lovely Christmas tree decorations and hydrangea heads work beautifully in an indoor wreath or garland. The garden is looking lovely and John, your lawn looks better than ours😊. Love seeing the boys playing together. ❤

Poor little Sawyer. He didn't know Crusoe was trying to clean him. LOL. That water must of been cold. John, I have suffered from back pain and injury for many years as a nurse of 43 years. I no longer work because I can't and I miss it. Even with benefits, I was still forced to work while management only worked regular hours. One time my doctor had to come examine me at work as I could barely stand let alone walk. He called my director of nursing and made her come in to cover and sent me home. I am glad you are setting your own limitations. I hope you heal soon, but I know it takes time and physio, etc. I have never had success with lupines or hollyhocks from seed either. The compost looks great. The veiws from your outdoor kitchen are amazing. I am so excited about your big secret. ❤

May I suggest ongoing massage, alternative chiropractor, and trigger point therapy. I'm recovering from both. My right started, got it fixed/maintained, and then the left went out in sympathy. Let time be your friend, and what a gift you've been given, the opportunity to enjoy your young family. The kidlets won't remember the time it took to build things, etc. They'll remember you being present. Take care

Love, love the boys as Sawyer is growing up, watching his brother and wanting to catch up. Those shots of them in the garden shed was priceless. The water Crusoe poured in Sawyer was priceless.
