Life changes can definitely impact reading. I was a caretaker for my grandmother for a few years and I honestly don't remember what I read during that time. I do remember binge watch Desperate House Wives. Sometimes our brains just need different things at different times. It can definitely be hard to realize your normal is shifting, please be graceful with yourself as you are taking care of yourself and know that you will find new joys. ❤❤❤

Good to see you enthusiastic and making reading plans. And as to your question- yes a change in reading happened to me after I had my boys who were both premature. After that I just couldn’t and still can’t stomach anything that involves child abduction or mortality and I used to read some pretty grizzly thrillers before that but I’m much more on the cozy side now xx

I totally agree that when you are going through a life changing event, things change.. I found that when I was diagnosed with a chronic illness my reading slowed down. I find now that I am definitely a mood reader and depending on the seasons and what I feel like impacts on my reading. Here is are a couple of cosies for you - The Mystery Bookshop series by VM Burns and The Cambridge Bookshop series by Elizabeth Penney. I love both of them.

Hi Sarah. I was very moved by your video. This absolutely has happened to me-maybe at three different significant times in my life. It is actually how I discovered science fiction, one genre that had previously eluded me. I think all of the cozy mystery series sound wonderful. I like the Victoria Thompson books, but the others sound really fun too. You have so much on your plate right now. You absolutely should read whatever brings you comfort, joy, distraction-whatever it is that you need. 😊

Hi Sarah, yes I don’t love romances any more, but I love a romance in a mystery or something where romance is not the main focus. And I love cozy mysteries! I recently cleaned out my attic and trying to downsize put most of those books in the barn to sell! What a wrench! But I went out and rescued some that I had to read again! One was the Cat Who series and I want to read them again. I do not have all of them but a good number! Love those! You can count on them to be NICE! You know what you are getting! Also I loved the Lighthouse library series! I only read three so maybe there are more now! God bless you on your health journey! We do what we gotta do, right? 😊😊😊

I am 68 and have gone thru many favorite genre changes. I was a fan of romance first but switched to Gothic Romance/Suspense but somehow got attracted to Cozy Mystery series before I even heard the term. Somehow those covers just pulled me in, along with the fun catchy titles. Then somehow I would get the desire to go back to romance for a bunch of books until somehow I was at my limit for romances. You know what I mean. Just don't feel it at the moment. The Cozies just seemed to not be a turnoff and off you go reading them and getting hooked until you read the whole series. That little cycle has run through my life several times. I can't get enough cozies now. And now because of you and Storm and a few other booktubers, you guys show so many great and interesting books that my TBR has really grown! Reading cozies is by far my most favorite activity! Thanks for posting.

Sarah, you have had a stressful year, so we all understand/appreciate that what you are going through would shift your perspective and your emotions towards reading. I think, even aside from the medical issues, you might just need a shift in what you are reading, and even how much you are reading. I’m sure it happens to all of us at some point. It makes us human. Anyway, I m glad you are reading cozies. They are so unique! I have two series I really like and they both have cats in them. I will put them in the comments of another video when I a, near my reading journal. Have a great day!

Hello Sarah. Okay back in the 80's I only read historical romances. Julia Quinn, Hannah Howell, Julie Garwood, Sophia Jordan, Linda Lael Miller, and Eliosa James. Then the 90's I started reading category romances that introduced me to Nora Roberts, Janet Evanovich, and Debbie Macomber. Then I started mysteries and occasionally I might read contemporary romance but mostly mysteries. I feel like mysteries grabs my attention from the first page and I cannot stop until I find out who the killer was. Chill Factor by Sandra Brown. I started reading that book at 7 am and did not stop until 4 pm. Right down to the last chapter found out who the killer was. I hope you understand my reasoning in this long message. I am praying for you and take care.

I can't believe I'm listening g to this! I have had chronic pain for 27 yrs. 24/7. I have 5 auto-immune illnesses. I could go on&on. A long time ago I read alot of cozy mysteries and enjoyed them. Then got into lots of different genres I hadn't read before. Enjoyed that also. My health got worse. This entire summer has been incredibly painful, had a serious surgery that could not go as planned once surgeon got in.During g the 4 day hospital stay I almost died twice because of inept care. THEN into a nightmare of A rehab for two and a half wks. (I signed myself out) of MORE inexcusable very bad care, life threatening actually had to call 911 one time! Was very traumatized and in mega pain after coming home and the entire summer, even still. All this to say, my regular reading (all genres) weren't working for me. I would cry and be very frustrated. Decided to go back to reading some cozy mysteries. Feeling g much better. I love the Victoria Thompson series you mentioned. Have 20+ in the series and take my time readiing them from yrs. ago. Odd how we both went through health crises and turned to cozy mysteries! I hope things go more than well for you. Blessings

I missed this video notification Sarah. My reading taste shift happened in 2020 after losing my dad. I wanted comfort reads and discovered cozy classics set in the English Countryside. I also started reading seasonally. Now I've expanded to just cozy. It can be classic, fantasy historical/lit fic or mystery. I've also narrowed my romance to seven authors all low angst and on the sweeter side: Belle Calhoune Patrica Davids Julie Klassen, Nancy Neigle, Rae Anne Thayne , Jill Weatherolt and Susan Wiggs. 2024 has been my best on Booktube because I took the tine to find out what speaks to me . I haven't had a recent medical diagnosis, but I do have depression and this sudden change in reading taste is currently happening to me. I'm not sure if it's permanent. You see, I usually read history, and I just read about a horrible period. It burned me out and worsened my depression significantly. Now I'm craving something else. There is an art book event on Booktube and I've just made an overly long, very organized list (I also like lists) of potential books to mood read from, in addition to fantasy and whatever else I feel like reading in September.

Really good list of series. I'm glad you relieved yourself of reading category if you are not feeling it right now. Absolutely agree life changes and stressor impact our reading desire and taste. I also think time and age have effects as well - much like our taste in food changes. I also like rotating through series as I get burned out reading the same one back to back too.

What a great idea. I love the rotation idea. Sometimes I loose interest in a series but this should keep the interest. Currently I’m reading Barbara Freethy, Perilous Trust. It is a 6 book series that she was direct selling (?) for a 6 book group. I was wondering if I was going to read book 2 right a way. Now I am not. I’m going to do a rotation like you. Have fun with your aunt. Hope you have a great day. Hugs and prayers.

I feel this. When I started reading romance when I was 15 or 16 it was the mid 90s and I was reading a lot of vintage bodice rippers with all the conflict, miscommunication and angst turned to 11. After about a decade of that I read Lisa Kleypas re-release of When Strangers Marry and while there was a tiny bit of angst the major conflict was never between the main couple. It was such a revelation to me because it made my reading experience so much more enjoyable to not have such constant tension. I shifted away from heavy angst romance to the shorter lighter reads and haven’t looked back. I think our reading tastes are dictated by our emotional needs and when life shifts so do our tastes. Looking forward to learning more about cozies!

Hi Sarah, I agree that life changing events definitely affect reading choices. Sometimes your love of one particular thing just disappears for a while and something else takes it’s place. Your plan sounds like a great idea and those cozy mysteries look good, I must try some. Dee

It's always fun to see what you're reading. I'm like you-- I cannot read a series of books, one after another. They are too predictable. After your devastating medical diagnosis, it's no wonder that your reading preferences have changed-- all of life has changed for you! Good luck with your cozy mystery round robin. I look forward to watching more of your reviews. Wishing you all the best for your transplant.

I absolutely know what you're talking about. When I'm stressed my reading changes or even stops. I'm on book 20 of the Campers and Criminals series and it's so much fun to get lost in. I do them all on audiobook from Libby. Love the setting and the characters. The first book had major plotholes but they just get better and better as the series goes on. It's the only cozy mystery series I've ever liked but I might try out that Noodle Shop mysrery series once I'm caught up on my current one. I love switching genres when life changes. Sometimes it's exactly what we need.

So much yes on the reading taste changes, I used to read a ton on literary fiction and now only sometimes pick one up as I don't have the spoons to read that genre. Personal life mixed with the absolutely bonkers reality that is this modern world makes it so that I need to read things that don't require a lot of mental energy. I'm excited for all the cozy mystery reviews.

Great subject for discussion! I understand, my reading tastes have shifted as well. For me, a lot of it is an age thing. I’m 45, and in general (there are exceptions) I can’t relate to the very young characters in romance books anymore. I’m in the same age bracket as their moms, and my oldest daughter is in their age bracket 😂. However, I can still read cozy mysteries with young sleuths. I guess it’s because the focus is on the mystery and not all the drama. I had enough drama in my own life in my 20’s, I don’t need to go back to that stuff. Also, I like returning, over and over, to a setting with a small town and characters I’m familiar with. It’s very comforting, and it’s my favorite aspect of cozy mysteries.

So many of those series on your list are ones I want to try. I've heard nothing but good about the Noodle Shop and Gaslight Mysteries. And yes, I've been there with reading changes. In my twenties, I was all urban fantasy. Then I got big into romance. And a couple years back, I started getting into cozies. While I still love urban fantasy, it's definitely fallen by the wayside lol.

Estherjane here! Sarah, I loved my WWII books but then all of a sudden I just was not finishing them. I have loved cozy for quite away. Use to love horror and true crime. During the pandemic I wanted to read all the books about the dust bowl, aka Four Winds. This past year my sister I lived with passed and my dog. So I have gone back to 85% cozies. Of your list you know I love Storms Gaslight series. I also like Eva Gates. Now I’m reading the grilled cheese. But with Spooky Season coming up there will be others. Although I do read something different in between. I am now 4th on the list for When The World Fell Silent and can’t wait. I also read The Women. Enjoy this and if you change again so be it. Life always seems to throw us curveballs and I think we need to just go with the flow of reading. Happy reading 😊😊😊❤❤❤

This happens to me quite often. I get depressed and it shows up in my reading. I started out reading what I call cozy vampire books, then I went into cozy mysteries, romances, westerns were next now I'm back to full swing and reading mostly vampire books. Anyway, you need to find books to escape into. You have very important worries and what ever your escape, it's justified. Big hugs and happy reading.

Your reading taste changing could also be the fact that you have read so many books and can foresee what's going to happen before it happens. The predictability, along with the lack of escapism [current releases] that the genre is beloved for, leaves you dissatisfied. Also, I'm a list girl too. It must be my type A personality but I get what you're saying about seeing the progress.

Seasons of life are big influences on what I read. I used to love tear-jerkers. The more a book or a movie made me cry, the more I enjoyed it. Between 1995-1999 I lost the last five members of my family. Including two younger brothers, both grandmothers, and last my beloved mom. I cannot tolerate anything with a lot of angst since that time. I still manage to read a wide variety of books. My go to books include many genres, but I love them most if they involve found-family, or large family stories. Most of them I read as they were/are published. My longest running mystery series is by Donna Andrews, entitled The Meg Langslow Murder Mysteries. Meg come from a very large family. Meg is a blacksmith by trade and the first few books are situated around art festivals, family weddings, and her crazy family. Then she marries a handsome actor would had minor Hollywood success, but moved to Meg’s hometown where he went into teaching college drama classes. They buy a farm and are shocked to find the last owner was a hoarder. That was a delightful episode. I just finished book 34 or 35? Time progresses in the stories and now her nephew, who was a toddler in the early books, has graduated from university and is quite the computer wizard/detective. She is now publishing two books a year, August and a holiday-related story that gets released in the Fall. What keeps this series interesting is that Meg’s life changes just as my life/season change. It has kept the series interesting even though it isn’t high art. Oops…can you tell I like this series? Okay, I’ll shut up now. Sorry for the rant. 😊

Do you ever watch old movies my brother and I are fans stuff like the Marx’s brothers movies like duck soup and the big store . The big store you might like that cause it’s essentially a musical mystery. Movies serials like the black coin or spy smasher or the original captain marvel movie serials ? Or old pro wrestling like from Memphis or Texas ? Wccw or world class championship wrestling out Texas is on of my favorite classic wrestling territories Memphis is a close second though it’s my brothers favorite.
