It’s interesting to see during the dominion and borg threat we see vast number of diversity in ships. Both to test new tech but to fit combat roles. After voyagers return and crippling the borg threat, dominion back in the gamma quadrant and romulan and Klingons are more neutral than ever. We see the slow phase out by the time Picard series of starfleet doing less diversity but more upgrading of classic designs and building mission specific variants with older design space frames. This definitely shows a peace time attitude and a post war economy as well. The Miranda class probably one of the oldest fleet ships in constant combat roles suggested that even while the excelsior class was in production the Miranda was still produced heavily. Ship yards would not necessarily need full scale remodels for keeping fleet ships similar.

Honestly, when I played STO (about 10 years ago now, crikey) I viewed all these homage/update ship designs quite cynically - as upgraded and reskinned versions of old ships to milk the optional purchases. I didn’t give much attention to the finer points of the redesign. These videos over the years have honestly helped me to appreciate them a bit more. I still feel a lot of them mess with the proportions and lines of the classic ships, but I can appreciate their filling in the previously-missing details on various models like deflectors and impulse engines, and the deliberate “family resemblance”.

I do like how they did not really know where the Miranda would shine, but when it came to the Reliant she is perfect for doing all the "inside federation space jobs" leaving the more tougher battle ships to work the boarders in the hostile areas....Reliant with the 2 large shuttle bays can move allot of cargo or people quickly for if there is a planetary disaster freeing up the real combat ships to stay in the more hostile space roles.. After all history shows ships like the PT boat in WWII was not the hardest hitting ship but they got allot of the little jobs done freeing up larger transport ships to stay in troop landing fleets.. The PT boat wasn't the fastest ship nor the strongest but get a few in a group did cause headaches for larger IJN ships allowing the group hit way above there weight... Another good thing about the Reliant with it's small crew can be good for training ships. With a crew of 200 that should allow a lower rank officer to be more in a leadership role then on a larger ship. Allowing the short term personal to get some training, while also giving young personal that want to make a life long career in Star Fleet... I could see that being a perk like for a ships doctor, if it is a short term thing to get training and hands on history treating folks, they may only serve 8 years then retire and settle on a planet to get a stable/safe place for a family... While also giving the crew that plan to make a career the hands on job experience and letting there skills show to get them a better spot on a larger ship...

The Reliant Class should be easily reequipped for anything as its specialty. Need it for logistics? NO problem but there are better courier ships for that. Need a combat vessel? Easier to equip it from a bare keel but can easily be outfitted for combat and be a pocket battleship. The Reliant and Akira should be about the same in that regard. A ship class that can be aces at a single purpose if set up for that at the start. Like the Akira, the Reliant can operate largely on its own but does better when part of a larger fleet/formation/constellation. The presence of such ships make a Command ship, Galaxy, Nebula, Odyssey, or similarly sized and capable class vessel that much more effective.

Your final point about complexity is an interesting one and has me thinking that it might point to a wider issue for the Federation in the late C24th to early C25th Complex ships like this would not only require more effort to build but also maintain & support. Following a series of wars and attacks (such as the Synth attack). I wonder if the Federation was suffering its equivalent of a recession. That may explain why complex ships were phased out - such as with Luna Class systems put into the frames of easier to maintain classes like the Constitution III that used simpler and common components where they could (e.g. the "old" style internals in the nacelles). Or why the Enterprise F was retired comparatively early. Perhaps it was only with the Sagan & Echelon class we see Star Fleet returning to the best practice of developing top end fleets of related classes (last seen with the Sovereign, Parliament, California etc) even if they were designed for sustainability (the common nacelles still being used)

Wait for a sale! One of the better Miranda variants is the T6 Clarke, as it also unlocks visuals for the Discovery-era Malachowski class. People have made impressive kitbashes using the parts the Clarke/Malachowski unlocks. The Clarke can also launch fighters, which is always useful for dealing damage and soaking up enemy fire. Ignore the T6 Excelsior. The ugly 3000 zen Resolute was one if STO's earliest T6 ships and thus suffers for it in visuals and performance. The Legendary Excelsior is in the 11th Anniversary bundle and this far too expensive. If you want a decent Excelsior-looking T6 ship, consider the Concorde class Command Battlecruiser. Unfortunately, giving a T6 ship to new players instead of the old T1 Miranda just wasn't possible. I know they tried, but couldn't find a way. Regardless, this is my favorite part of Star Trek Online outside of the main storyline. The updates of old ships with absolutely gorgeous new designs, new classes, and new roles in the fleet. As much as I love the TNG-movie-era starships like the Sovereign, Akira, Luna, etc., the 25th century really needed to stand out on its own.
