Heya! I'm a construction worker and i work with heavy machinery on a regular basis. That excavator's 'fixed joint' is actually fully accurate! Excavators don't have a joint there, but they *do* have an angle on the arm at that point to make it easier to dig with. Excavators will typically only have 3 joints; The 'shoulder' (base), 'Elbow' (middle piston) and 'Knuckle'/bucket. Though some excavators do have additional ones. Smaller ones will have a vertical swivel at the shoulder that allows the arm to move side to side, some have an extension at the second joint like some rubber-tire backhoes do, and occasionally you'll find excavators outfitted with a crab claw, which is this weird metal claw part that goes over top the bucket with its own piston that they use to grab stuff with.

Oh hey, that's awesome! Designers clearly did their research then, and that's great to see. So now I'm even more curious to know your answer: what kind of construction City set would you most like to see?

@CheeseyStudios Honestly, I'd love to see a loader! They're Ike the big cousins of forklifts and bulldozers with massive wheels and a joint in the middle as opposed to traditional steering. They can be outfitted with forks or a bucket depending in the need :)

For sure I can relate. Construction vehicles and trains most of all. Although it is fun to design and make larger buildings with Lego. City lends itself even more to customizing your own little 'town' or 'city' than most themes.

The construction City theme always makes me nostalgic for that browser game they had, where you had to move different vehicles to their areas, like an ambulance to the hospital, an excavator to the construction site, etc. It'd be interesting to see this sort of division within the City sets nowadays, specially with this huge step up in their engineering.

I technically own the old mobile crane. My grandma has a bunch of old lego ranging from the 1980's to 2005 or so. A couple of the old cool pieces were stolen by other children (we have a lot of cousins), and most of the instructions are gone, but they apparently still had some instructions. Included was the mobile crane instructions, and it answered so many questions of where so many pieces came from, along with the two passenger planes they have, though those instructions are gone. It's really cool to actually see that set in physical form, as I don't think I have all lthe pieces to rebuild it. It doesn't even have the stickers attached. Cool to see that they rebuilt it, and man I know child me would've loved to have that excavator.

When the leaks of these sets appeared in early May, I knew they would be an instant buy for me. So I managed to pick them up as soon as they came out. The excavator has an excellent level of detail and offers a good playability, same goes for the crane, however the biggest flaw of it is the mounting of the crane to the ,,transporter", which is causing the tilt everytime the load is even slighty heavier than porta-potty included in the set. I hope these sets are the beggining of new construction subtheme, I would love to see a road roller of some kind or a new dump-truck.

Construction was my favorite City subtheme growing up - I have owned 9 different construction sets over the years - some I no longer have, or have lost many of the pieces to (keep in mind I built MOC's out of these), and I always found construction-related MOC's especially fun to build! I had the 7630 Front Loader, 7631 Dump Truck, 7632 Crawler Crane, 7633 Construction Site, and 7746 Single-Drum Roller, all 2009 sets, and years later, I got the 60073 Service Truck, 60074 Bulldozer, and 60152 Sweeper and Excavator. I also had the 60018 Cement Mixer from 2013, and while Lego technically listed that as a Traffic set, it fit right in with my construction sets perfectly!

So glad you enjoyed! It's always so fascinating to compare the other models to the modern ones. @@CheeseyStudios Yes! Most designs are so much more complex now, with much higher pieces counts. I can still build some Classic Space sets from memory, but I doubt I could do the same with most of even the smaller sets these days. Heck, the 4+ City Space set (60429) is at least as complex a build as 918, and has more parts (though not all are for the ship). I just wish LEGO would give us some of these awesome themes (D&D, Zelda, etc.) in smaller sets, too, rather than just these massive builds which cost hundreds of dollars.

It's genuinely puzzling why construction isn't an evergreen subtheme for City. Unless kids' tastes have changed dramatically in the last decade or so, I can't see why this wouldn't be popular year after year. Construction work is something kids will have seen, it's part of their real life and yet it's so absent from LEGO City. There hasn't been a proper wave of City construction sets since 2015, which is crazy. And as lovely as these two sets (three if we include the small steamroller from January) are, it's not a "real" wave of sets either, which is disappointing. One can only hope that this is LEGO testing the waters before committing to bringing the subtheme back properly, like it deserves.

I will say one thing - the arm on the new excavator, with it's use of Technic pieces, is MUCH sturdier than the arm on the 2005 version with the ratcheted joints - those can wear out after a lot of heavy play - as evident on the excavator from my 7633 Construction Site set from my childhood which I still have. Admittedly, I took that set apart a lot and rebuilt it many times, and those pieces were used on a variety of MOC's over the years, so snapping those pieces apart and back together again over the years may have contributed to that.

I'm a fan of the construction sets too, but I lost interest when they downsized the scale about 15 years ago. My first sets as an adult collector (around 2005) was a mobile crane (this one! 7:28 ), and a couple of smaller diggers (this one! 3:13 ). My most impressive is probably the giant bulldozer from around 2005-2008, which was just before the shrinkflation kicked in. That thing is close to a foot long. It's a monster. I also have a few Technic construction vehicles from around 2008, which was a great time for Lego. Power Miners, Agents.. lots of good stuff.

the only reason why the mobile crane don't have a turning joint int he middle it's because of the crane arm, you can't bend them and that's why the stearing wheel are like the 8 wheels in the front, it's usually use for heavy lifting but not great to drive trought the city.

The only Lego City construction sets I have are the mobile crane from the last few years and the bulldozer from like ten years ago. Both are fairly fun in their own right. Though I think I'll definitely be getting the Mobile Construction Crane at some point. Also, if they ever make another tower crane set, they should give you like six or so little sub-builds that you can stack about with it.

@@Ogre6972 The Raven knights look crazy good. The deep yellow contrasting with the dark red and pearl dark grey, it is a very nice colorscheme. I hope Lego themselves or the BDP will release another full set for this faction. I think it will be one of the best color combinations for a full set in the medieval theme.

Not gonna lie Lego city construction sets have recently become an interest to me and I hope with these newer city construction sets we get a small bulldozer and maybe a wrecking ball but that excavator is honestly really cool and I immediately went to buy a Lego construction set after seeing this video! also your lizard is both adorable and surprising because I honestly have never seen a lizard that adorable before and now I kinda want Lego to make one for a Lego city set or at least make one for minifigure scale.

There was a 3 axle mobile crane (60324) released in 2022 and a small construction steamroller (60401) released earlier this year. I heard the rumours about these sets quite a while ago and being CITY I didn't want to get my hopes up too much, but I am in love with what they have released. I am slightly disappointed they didn't go with regular yellow, don't get me wrong I think it looks great. It's just that I'm designing a crane MOC and those new boom pieces will make great boom lift cylinders, but they haven't released enough parts in bright light orange to completely switch. Also great to see you finally managed to snag the XXL Mobile Crane. It was the first set I purchased with my own money back in 2005.

IMO: Lego City should be focusing on playability and not trying to fit in as many details as possible. That's why the models in the 2000s were the best. If I want an accurate excavator or mobile crane, I might as well get a proper Revell model or something like that. The price difference isn't huge either.
@CheeseyStudios
@CheeseyStudios 5 күн бұрын
I can definitely get behind that. Personally, I love that these super-accurate models still existed, but they should be rebranded under the Icons line or something. All themes are suffering a bit from this over-detail creep, which is pretty unnecessary for lines like City, Friends, and Ninjago.

These look great. I think, apart from the playful extra movement and the cabin being able to open in the smaller set, the newer sets are still superior and I really don't mind the extra realism at all. This is one of the first times I've seen these sets in the stores before I actuall saw them in your videos and I was already intrigued by them. I'm not entirely sure this is the pricepoint I'm willing to buy these at, but they are fun. I love how you went into the comparable older models for this review, this really gives some perspective and shows off the much nicer darker yellow used in the model. (bright light orange I believe) Thanks for the video, amazing as always.

I'm so glad I was able to find the XXL Mobile Crane. I had actually started recording the review when I realized, "oh hey, don't I have the 2005 Digger too? Might as well build that!" lol The construction sets have always been peak City, and so glad to see that continue here. Lots of new potential with this rebrand, from steamrollers, to dozers, to more cranes. Excited to see what next year might have in store!
