5:00 hilarious fun fact about the Jack Stone SUV- it’s regarded as the set that “ended an era.” Mads Nipper brought it to a board meeting to use it as an example of why the company was failing in the early 2000’s (expensive new molds for a product that sold poorly). “This isn’t a fire truck- it’s a spaceship. We are never making this mistake again.”
@CheeseyStudios10 ай бұрын
That's insane! It definitely felt like a spaceship when building it, and I can see why it would be the perfect example of a set to bring. If you take a look a the parts list, only a quarter of the parts are actually still in production today. o_o

And the number 6 is the one that started saving the company. This is how the story goes (from the book "Brick by Brick"): "Nipper spotted a prototype for a fire truck fashioned by a designer named Henrik Andersen. Inspired by the 1980s City fire trucks that he had built in his youth, Andersen had given the two-decade-old truck a modern yet classic makeover. The kid in him told Nipper that Andersen's truck was a winner. (...) (days later) Nipper called his six hundred developers and marketers together to reset the design teams' direction. (...) Nipper put up a slide of a chunky, somewhat stale 1997 truck from LEGO City. «This is where we forgot to innovate», he announced. «Even though is an iconic product, not having newness and freshness in a classic toy is a deadly sin". He next flashed an image of a 2001 fire truck from Jack Stone (...) «looks like a spaceship, not a fire truck», Nipper asserted. He then put a slide of Andersen's newly reinvented truck, which would soon launch under the revived City brand (...) «this is what a fire truck should look like,» Nipper announced. And then pointing to the Jack Stone toy, he added, «we will never again make a fire truck like that one.»" This was in March 2004, and that prototype would become the firetruck number 6 launched in 2005.

I actually really like the old firefighter truck instructions that had you place like 30 bricks at once, because it means less paper wasted on simple instructions, since the actual build was much simpler and only relied on a layer-by-layer construction which is actually quite easy to figure out with such large instruction steps
@CheeseyStudios10 ай бұрын
I do prefer it over the instructions today which painfully have you add one, or sometimes even zero pieces per step...
@pinobluevogel64588 ай бұрын
As someone that recently built two bigger classic space sets (Beta 1 command base, Galaxy Explorer) and 2 modern larger sets in a medieval theme (Viking Village and Medieval Town Square), I can definitely say the modern instructions look much cleaner. The build process for the old sets is simpler, adding layers of bricks and plates mostly, which allows for much shorter instructions to be usable and still have a nice building experience. Overall, I prefer having simpler instructions that allow you to build at a slightly faster pace. Some of the sets I buy today are large and have thousands of pieces and finding the time to spend hours on building isn't ideal, as having to wait a day or two in between sessions isn't as fun. One other small thing I started to notice, that I became much more critical of the quality and strength of the builds, even while building it. For example, I was worried throughout building the 3 building set piece from the Medieval town square that the connections with the hinge plates were too weak, especially if you pick up the whole assembly. Only at the very end of building this part of the set, you add some technic bars into some bricks with crossopenings, strengthening the front of where the hinge connected the center building with the other two. Still, this rather weak connection between the buildings is something I'm going to change first, as to also allow the buildings to be opened fully and side by side as well. It is the only major flaw I could find with the set and very unlike LEGO.

A great rundown with some iconic landmark sets included. I really like these beautifully made videos that go into a specific Lego theme. This is not as fun as a more complete look into a specific line (like the Viking or Knight's Kingdom videos that I really loved) but it is not too far behind either. The remark about the castle sets in the early part of the video almost jumped me out of my seat, the irony was about as cold as it was true. I do love me a firetruck, but having a single good one and maybe a firestation is probably all you ever need, while having more castle certainly is never bad. It is a problem with LEGO sets ever since the late 90's, they started to move away a little from the building and designing your own world aspect and moved more into sets meant to play with, with added play features and bigger pieces for building. I remember as a kid I never understood why there were barely any normal citizens and residential building sets you could buy. I had maybe 7 firefighter minifigures and 12 policemen minifigs and I rarely, if ever, used more than 2 of each in my cities. Even commercial buildings like a supermarket, a store, or even something as basic and common as a farm was much less available than our trusty firefighters and police sets. Like many of my kid friends, we were more busy creating our own little worlds and building, than actually playing with existing stuff, which I guess is more common today. Thanks for the video!

Glad you enjoyed! The lack of houses from LEGO City was always frustrating to me too as a kid. @@CheeseyStudios For sure things are slowly trending up. One thing I noticed, that apart from the modular buildings, the modern building sets look a bit simple or sometimes it is only a hint of a building. I actually owned the Lego fire station set 6382 back in the day. I remember Lego releasing a new fire station set almost every year. I also owned the Lego lights and sound fire truck set 6480 with flashing lights and working siren.

I have the pieces to the 1981 station with the garage door. It was mixed in with a bunch of other 80s Legos I got from a flea market as a kid. I didn't have the instructions and I already had the late 90s fire station, so I never built it.

That makes sense. You can never have enough trucks, but probably a single station will do the trick!

To be honest, the only fire truck I have is set 70436, the Hidden Side Phantom Fire Truck 3000. It’s so unique compared to any other fire truck Lego has made. The set is essentially Lego’s original idea for an Optimus Prime vs Slender man set. We would get an official Optimus Prime set 2 years later but this set was such a cool concept & it really sold me.

Love how much detail they put into that set.

I've recently been in a personal Lego set revival, where I've rebuilt almost all the Lego sets I've had in my life (mainly to be sure I know where I can find a specific piece but details😅...). Among these there was also set 7213, 8x8 off road fire truck and boat from I think 2011. That's the one set I'm the happiest for having rebuilt, heck it looks like a freakin Kamaz truck

The first Lego City Fire set I helped build was part of I think 7208 as part of an event at my then-local library (there were some early Ninjago sets there too, so it had to have been 2011 or 2012). Ironically, I didn't actually own a City Fire set of my own until 2022 when I used an Amazon gift card I got as a college graduation present to buy a secondhand 7942 from a third-party seller (I got it for a bit more than $20, which is a good price for a set that old). I plan to get 60371 and 60414 at some point this year and next, and I'm also interested in getting 60001 as well as 60216 and trying to turn the tiller truck included in 60216 into a proper one (i.e. rear cab, turntable on the trailer joint rather than the rear, & single pair of driving wheels).

The 2005 truck was my first and only system fire truck, but my little brother was obscessed with them growing up. After he got older, we retrofitted and remixed fire trucks into spaceships to fit in better with a star wars based universe. I am proud to say that the monarchal buerocracy of Nalpalmar still stands strong in the fight against the empire!

6429 Blaze Responder. That's the set I remember most as a kid, or at least the hull of it. I don't think I ever put it in the water, the stickers were applied a little crooked, and the set likely never stayed intact, but that's the one fire themed set I remember playing with the most, mainly because it was the only one I had until BrickMaster gave me 20002 4x4 Fire Truck! I have a total of 2 Firefighter sets in my whole collection. I may actually have more than that through donations, but I never counted the set if I never had the instructions included for it, and my only real tell would be through minifigures, and I definitely know I have more policeman than firemen, I may only have the three figures from those two sets.

Pretty sure that Red’s Water Rescue is so expensive because of LEGO Cars fans wanting Red himself for their Radiator Springs display (which is only missing Doc Hudson, Lizzie, and a non-4+ version of Sheriff; all you’d really need for everyone else would be the Flo’s V8 Cafe set and the Team 95 pit stop set with Guido and Luigi). Seriously, why DID LEGO skip out on Doc?
