This song is about the 1980s when people called 900 numbers and paid per minute. That’s why he says “Pick up the receiver, I’ll make you a believer”. Also, when he says “Reach out and touch faith” is a reference to a 📞 commercial that said “Reach out and touch someone”.
@Mauther
@Mauther 3 ай бұрын
That's one way to read the song. But according to Martin Gore in a SPIN magazine article: It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis Presley was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?

You guys may not even realize that this song + Enjoy The Silence + Policy Of Truth, you've reviewed in the past, are songs released as very successful singles from their 1990 album VIOLATOR, their pinnacle album. That's why I recommend, even apart from the video, to take the time to listen to this album, which is considered one of the best in the world of pop- synth music.. As a youngster, I listened to this album repeatedly and couldn't get enough of it. All songs have a great rhythm, sophisticated stereo effects and it is an experience especially when listening with headphones from a quality source (CD, Tidal, Spotify, etc.).

Their international classics include ‘Every 1’s a winner’; ‘You sexy thing’; both used in a lot of film soundtracks & were huge US hits. ‘Heaven’s in the back seat of my Cadillac’; ‘Disco Queen’; the original ‘Brother Louis’ - you’ve reacted to an inferior version by a US band in the past; ‘Rumours’; ‘Put you love in me’ and ‘Emma’ are just a some of their masterpieces. My absolute favorite DM song is It's No Good from 1997! Despite the title, it's *so* good! Very dense with layer upon layer of sounds, emotion, and beautiful, meaningful lyrics. At the time, singer Dave Gahan was going through it with heroine addiction, and if you read between the lines... Never Let Me Down Again is another with similar themes.

This song was a bombshell in clubs when it hit because everyone knew Depeche Mode were incredible already, but they had always been purely a synth band and suddenly you had main songwriter Martin Gore introducing some real guitar and drums. It's a very simple song in terms of the hook and composition, but then as with all Depeche songs it has so many cool underlying textures and sounds underneath. I know you've done "People Are People" and "Just can't Get Enough" already. When you go looking for more DM you should watch the amazing liver versions of "Never Let me Down" (the crowd participation is legendary!), Everything Counts [Live - from "101" in the Rose Bowl], and Black Celebration, and Behind The Wheel. All amazing songs, bug hits, and with multiple great live performances on video.

At 4:15, that's kind of beatboxing like The Fat Boys or Doug E. Fresh. As far as electronic music goes, before the 1980s there are Delia Derbyshire, Raymond Scott, Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra, & others. Jazz artist Sun Ra was using an electric piano in the late 1950s. The Monkees are one of the first mainstream acts to use a Moog, on songs like "Star Collector" & "Daily Nightly". Stevie Wonder is probably the main one who really popularized it though in the early 1970s. Herbie Hancock has a song called "Nobu" released in 1974 that y'all might want to listen to.

Seeing Depeche Mode live was life-altering and one of the best concerts I have ever been to! Please consider ENJOY THE SILENCE and HALO and I FEEL LOVED for some other banger DM tracks. Dave Gahan has some solo work you might look into - I really like the songs Deeper + Deeper, Use, You, Insoluble, Saw Something, Kingdom & Endless off his album "HOURGLASS" -fantastic album!! I think y'all need to revisit TORI AMOS too - CAUGHT A LITE SNEEZE and CRUEL and GOD are worth a listen. And Fiona Apple "Limp" - keep smiling y'all!!

Among diehard Depeche Mode fans, I am a diehard. This song is SO played out to me that it's almost a bother to hear it, even though it's arguably their most famous song - but seeing your guys' reaction to this song reminds me of how I felt hearing it when I was a kid. It reminded me of what's so great about this song. Also, the reason why you can't tell what kind of sound or what is making the sounds you're hearing is because Depeche Mode records samples of anything (and I mean ANYTHING) that makes a sound. They've used car exhaust, fireworks, cans, suitcases being slammed. They never want to repeat a "sound" - it makes their music so fresh and unique.

Depeche Mode - one of the quintessential bands of the '80's. You should do "People Are People". That song resonates to these times. It was, if I remember correctly, the first song of theirs that started being played here in the US. It's a really cool song! Love your review.👍😊

I am soooooo proud of you two for getting back to Depeche Mode - My all-time favorite band. The entire Violator Album is exceptional. A hidden gem from this album is the song "HALO." You mentioned that Depeche Mode can sound completely different from song to song, which is 100% correct. They are masters at sampling & effects & their live performances are legendary. The only other band that I can think of that can compare to Depeche Mode in changing their sound & range is the band "MUSE." I have been practically begging you to check "MUSE" out because I believe that you will absolutely fall in love with them. And since Monday is my birthday (which is true), maybe just maybe you will react to them :) - And Depeche Mode, my goodness, they do not have a bad song. Incredible band! For the "MUSE," if you decide to fall in love with another band, listen to "MUSE," song - Supermassive Balck Hole & you can thank me later for turning you on to them...

If you like this I think you'll love 'Shake The Disease''. It's a slightly earlier song but a massive step forward from their even earlier songs like 'Just can't get enough'. Never has a band changed their music so much over the years. 'Shake the Disease' was described as football hooligans as wimps on their 'Singles 81-85' album. Musically and probably lyrically Depeche Mode have always been one step ahead of all the other bands because they were never frightened to experiment. The lyrics of 'Blasphemous Rumours' were SO powerful. Jay you said you wanted more Depeche Mode, I would definitely definitely suggest 'Shake The Disease', it's full of minor chords

Depeche Mode's album, Violator, came out in 1990, I was 25 years old and my mate & I trained on the weights to the album routinely, for quite some time ( R.I.P. Rob ) - there's some very moody, brilliant tracks to the album, I do recommend. I've owned most of Depeche's albums, loved 'em since 1981, I was 16, with their track, New Life. They've got some brilliant tracks for you to discover. 🙂

They have been around FOREVER. They have released music from late 80s to this very day. They never stopped releasing music. They have so many great songs. Most of them are from the 90s which was their decade. And this song is number 3 on the Violator album. The whole album is just one song to another without any crazy jump in tone. Just smooth music. The only other album I can compare it to is the Nine inch nails album they released around the same time. Just goes from one song into another, and just keeps the same vibe.

Together with Enjoy the Silence. Personal Jesus is the biggest hit / song from Depeche mode. It is always the last song at their concerts. You should really listen to the 12 inch version. It has a mindblowing electronik ending. This was the first time a guitar was used as a dominant instrument in a Depeche Mode song. The song was inspired by the book Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley. It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis Presley was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way.

Amber and Jay, I said elsewhere that there's something about DM you don't get until you see them live, and I recommended Everything Counts. NLMDA is their other all-time-great live song. It's become a tradition with the fans to do the "Never Let Me Down Again Wave" in the chorus: wave both arms side to side, like a pair of windscreen wipers. Simple, fun... and liable to bowl you clean off your feet unless you sling your hips in the opposite direction to your hands 😝
