In this video, we explore Stevie Ray Vaughan's iconic cover of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" from his second album, "Couldn't Stand the Weather" (1984). Vaughan, a devoted admirer of Jimi Hendrix, believed it was crucial for people to hear Hendrix's music. Though he remained faithful to the original, Vaughan infused the track with his unique style, making it his own. Sam Kemp of Far Out magazine and Damian Fanelli of Guitar World both praise Vaughan's ability to smooth out Hendrix’s experimental edges without losing the music’s power or excitement, effectively introducing Hendrix's avant-garde blues to a new generation. Vaughan often performed "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" live, with standout versions included on the albums "Live Alive" (1986) and "Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985" (2001). Join us as we celebrate Vaughan's incredible talent and his heartfelt homage to Hendrix.

Stevie Ray was once asked about fame. He said "It don't matter much. When you get home you're still the guy who has to take out the garbage".

I will say this though, if y'all dont watch Jeff Healey and Stevie Ray Vaughan " Look at Little Sister", y'all will be missing a performance of a lifetime. Not to mention," Texas Flood-Live at El Mocambo ". Both performances will have you standing on your feet. Definitely standing ovation performances. Oh, Jeff Healey was blind, so he used a different style/technique to play. Treat yourselves and watch it even if you don't react to it. 👌💯

Kind of strange, isn't it, missing people we never met and did'nt have a close relationship with..?! Feel you though and it goes deep. I never met Jeff Buckley, I "saw the light" listening to his album Grace, could not wait for the next, and while recording it he passed away at the age of 30. I still mourn him more than 27 years later, because he "spoke to me" and was a songwriter and a singer with a voice that was so elevating ..! What a loss when SRV, JB and other "heavenly" musicians left this earthly existence way too early.

RIP: SRV 💔🔥🎸U R Missed Big SRV fan...here yeah, we lost him at the tender age of 35 yrs. old. Anytime, I listen to a song by SRV, I think about how much music we were cheated out of hearing, due to the crash. And yet I'm very grateful we were blessed with what we have from him. Stevie Ray music career began around the early 80's but his mainstream success and short-lived commercial success only spanned over about 7 years. He started out in clubs around Austin TX. He has an older brother named Jimmie Vaughan Jr. who was also a Texas bluesman. He had his own band and was quite successful...not as big as SRV but he still had a loyal fan base same as SRV had his loyal fans also. I'd like to suggest another one of his songs, if interested. "Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood (Live at the El Mocambo)" (by the channel: Stevie Ray Vaughan) FunFact: Stevie Ray broke guitar strings all the time, keep an eye out for how often he has help changing guitars in the middle of a performance. And He never misses a beat, Incredible skills! Anyway, like I said I'm a SRV fan. lol I read that Stevie Ray had said Jimmi Hendrix was one of his guitar heroes along with Albert King. SRV is considered one of the greatest Texas bluesmen of all time. Always enjoy rocking with you guys. Thanks for sharing. peace out~

Stevie Ray was larger than life but was only 5’5” tall. He played like a giant. I saw him live in the early 80s and I think he was not clean at that time, but he got his act together and was really gaining some notoriety in the years before he died. He was doing a concert with Eric Clapton and Robert Cray and the story goes that there was space at the last minute on a helicopter that he decided to take since it was leaving earlier than his. It crashed and all were killed on board. I remember it clearly because I was on the way to a friend’s funeral when it came across the radio. At first they speculated that it was Clapton’s helicopter but was later confirmed it was his. Such a sad day all around.

I came of age in Austin at the time Stevie was making his chops and becoming famous. Some of my fondest memories of that time was going to watch him play at local clubs like Antone's, Hole In The Wall, Liberty Lunch etc. Even after he got big he and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, his brother Jimmie's band, would play Labor Day, Memorial Day, Christmas, and New Years Eve shows for their hometown. A good friend of mine here in Austin is a guitar player, can't throw a rock in Austin without hitting one. Anyway, back in '87 Mike was playing a gig at Antone's and broke a pickup on his guitar and was ending the show early because he didn't have a spare. BTW, Mike played a Fender Strat, like Stevie. As he was packing up, Stevie appeared out of nowhere with a spare set of pickups he had taken off his "number 1", his favorite guitar. He had been in the back with Clifford Antone enjoying the show without anyone's knowledge. He told Mike he was enjoying it and didn't want him to stop. He literally gave Mike the pickups off his favorite guitar to keep playing. Like giving the proverbial shirt off his back. That's who he was. Heres another great true story about Stevie as told by Chris "Whipper" Layton, Stevie's drummer. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble were rehearsing for a tour at Prince's studio, Paisley Park. Stevie had never met Prince at this point, but they would all see him in the halls with Kim Bassinger, which they thought was funny since she was taller. Anyway, Bruce Springsteen was doing a show in Minneapolis one night and the band decided to go, hanging backstage they saw Prince with his big bodyguard. Stevie figures since he's rehearsing at Paisley Park, he might as well say hi and introduce himself to Prince. So he goes over to Prince and say's " Hi Prince, my name is Stevie Ray Vaughn". Which Prince ignores and never looks at Stevie. Stevie figuring Prince didn't hear him, repeats it, only to get a nasty look from Princes body guard. So, at this point Stevie realizes that Prince is ignoring him, and remember, Stevie WAS pretty well known at this point with 3 albums out already. So Stevie walks right up to Prince and say's, "you may be a Prince, but I'm the King Bee mutha f*^%&r", and walks off- with Prince staring right at him.

Stevie Ray was magic. Pure magic. You watch and listen to the man and you are captured by it. He is elite and something unreal. I remember hearing on the radio when he died and it was like I fell through the floor. A ton of bricks fell on me. It was just that devastating. You knew right then and there you will never witness anyone like him again and to this day no one has. A bright light that was snuffed out. I live not too far from Alpine Village where he was performing and the helicopter crashed. My brother lives in Milwaukee right outside of there and going to his house I always feel like I am going through a graveyard. You feel the loss every time.

Life Without You at the Capitol theatre in in Passaic NJ. Written by Stevie for his friend Charley Wirz who was a mentor and helped Stevie in how he designed his guitars and who died of a heart attack. His best vocal, great solo and beautiful message.

Stevie was a bad bad man! You need to check out his "Sound Check" it's just him doing a pre show sound check with the band several hours before the show. They go off, just because.

Its so cool to see another generation gettin hip to this Cat, who was not only amazing guitar player but a great person. I saw him live from the 2nd row at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland in 87 ...it was like walkin into a blow torch it was so intense....and met him a couple yrs later on a gig in Texas and he was ultra cool, and extremely humble. Hard to believe he's been gone 35 years.......aint nobody going to top what you just heard. Ever. Peace

Stevie Ray Vaughan was born to play the guitar. The instrument is like a part of his body and his soul. As good as the studio recordings are, the live performances are stunning because you not only get the music and his mastery, but his presence. You can feel and see his passion. First time I viewed a video of SRV and Double Trouble was of the song "Mary Had A Little Lamb" (1989, same Austin concert). You'll also hear a keyboard player in that song who is to keys as SRV is to the guitar. Also check out Stevie Ray doing an aggressive "Leave my Girl Alone" (same concert). His vocals are stunning in his "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up On Love" and "Tin Pan Alley." And don't miss his "Texas Flood" (1983, El Mocambo), as others have recommended. What Stevie does when he breaks a string in "Look At Little Sister" is amazing. One of his first hits is "Pride And Joy" (watch the one from Montreux, 1983). "Couldn't Stand The Weather" is fire, and, at Daytona Beach, SRV, the band, and the audience are having a such a blast with a joyful "Lovestruck Baby" / and a furious "Rude Mood. Stevie is even dancing with the first song, and then rockets into the second with flying fingers. You'll love some of the official music videos, too... like the one covering Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" (very clever, and with a cameo by Wonder at the end). And there's the hilarious official music video made for SRV's original song "Cold Shot" (the video shows Stevie and the band members' sense of humor, aptly fitting to his song while spoofing his own guitar obsession). The original members of SRV's band, Double Trouble, are Tommy Shannon on bass and Chris Layton on drums, with Stevie sometimes quipping that the group became a triple threat when Reese Wynans (keys) later joined the band in 1985. They all were great friends, and it was devastating to them when Stevie was killed in that helicopter crash in August 1990. Stevie was a humble and gracious man, an artist who honored the many blues artists who came before him, artists who too often didn't get the credit, acclaim, or financial rewards they deserved. Stevie had many idols, like his brother Jimmy Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Lonny Mack, and so many others. He was well-respected, not just for his skills, but for how he treated others. He never tried to outshine others' talents when he played with them, but gave them room to shine, playing with them admiringly while doing his best to make great music together with them. SRV never learned to actually read music, and it's true that he never played a song the same way twice. He also created great original pieces in different styles. For example, his "Riviera Paradise" is like ethereal jazz. His "When The House Is Rockin'" is entirely different... bringing you the party. Whether he's interpreting another artist's song or delivering his own, he truly has an otherworldly connection. Hope you take the opportunity to discover more of SRV's gifts. And just so you know, I really enjoyed your reactions. I subbed.

Stevie showed real respect and went to Jimi's father and asked him for his blessing to play some of his songs. Jimi's father gave him Jimi's wah- wah pedal which he was using on this song. RIP Stevie and Jimi.

His brother, Jimmie, is another amazing guitarist. He played for the Fabulous Thunderbirds and made one album with Stevie. There’s a story that someone asked Jimmie what it was like being born with a gift like his and Stevie’s. He laughed and said it wasn’t a gift: they played until their fingers bled, put crazy glue on their fingertips, and kept on playing.

Such a nice reaction, Corey is an insta fan, I've been an SRV fan since the 90's, he's an alien lent to us for a short time. You are in for a treat, everything he does is of this standard or even higher, you ain't seen nothing yet. I guess you are ready for Texas Flood Live at the Elmocombo (make sure it is that one),

As good as you can hear & see that he is, it's absolutely mind blowing to know how hard his guitar was to play with those heavy gauge monster strings he used, & how proficient he was at bending/shaking them with his unmatched vibrato like they were rubber bands instead of thick strings. For those of you who don't play guitar, it's a world of difference. His hands & fingers were strong af. Thanks for your great reactions!!!

I was fortunate to see Stevie once 40 years ago. I witnessed supreme greatness that night. There are so many more songs to explore of his like “Texas Flood”, “Pride and Joy”, “Couldn’t Stand the Weather”, and “Love Struck Baby”, for starters. Just imagine how much more music he could have given the world if he hadn’t died.
