Kind of disappointed you didn’t mention Kaze Emanuar, who wanted to make custom levels for Mario 64, discovered the engine lagged way too much on the levels he wanted to make, and proceeded to spend the next few years rewriting almost the entire Mario 64 source code to load and process much more detailed levels and textures than any official N64 game ever could. Edit: I guess it’s technically not homebrew
@Bro3256
@Bro3256 6 ай бұрын
Kaze tends to hack existing commercially released games so it doesn't really fall under homebrew but rather rom hacking. It should also be mentioned that there's a bit of contention when it comes to rom hacks being sold on physical cartridges as many of them are not manufactured by said hackers not to mention the questionable legality of it.

On the topic of new N64 releases that may not technically be homebrew, don't forget the Portal64 demake! The fact that it's even possible is impressive, and it's looking like it might end up being feature-complete by the end!

@@Bro3256I don't know, I think he's gone far beyond just "rom hacking" at this point. Return to Yoshi's Island 64 (his main title in development) has done so many things to set it apart from its source material being Super Mario 64, new physics for Mario, completely new levels, new textures, fully original music and completely original models. Now for older Rom Hacks I'd tend to agree since many of them reused many of the assets from SM64, but Yoshi's Island is a total source code rewrite

Wonder if this will be possible with digital-only consoles. I have a sick feeling we'll one day be forced to only buy digital because it's cheaper for the console manufacturers (and only the console manufacturers. No more cheap, second-hand physical games to buy). Maybe so long as the console can get online, you can use the browser on most modern consoles to get to a site (that isn't the provided store on the console, like Sony or Microsoft) that will allow you to still download games.

Nintendo 64 actually had a tiny library of 388 games compared to the Playstation's 7,918 games. It's impressive that so many N64 games were so high quality and memorable since it was so difficult to make and publish a game on the system.

Since when did the PS1 have nearly 8,000 games?! You must be including homebrews or repeated iterations of the same game released in different regions. The official library number has results ranging from 2,883 to 3,061 but even Wikipedia's list of every single game across every region tops out at 4,105 releases. The only way I found the number you referenced was Google's wiki blurb, but then that page doesn't even contain about half that number. Considering North America sold the most PS1's (41 million) & had 1,284 individual PS1 games released + Europe at number 2 with 31 million sold & 1,644 releases (many being the same titles released in North America), it's unlikely Japan accounted for 5,000+ additional, unique titles for only 21 million PS1's in the region.

When it comes to new games on older hardware in my opinion you cannot beat the amount that's been made for the Famicom and NES as official support for the Famicom ended in 1994 with the NES following a year later. Despite that every single year since games have been developed on this hardware from weird bootlegs to genuinely impressive hoembrew. The rabbit hole for this hardware goes a lot deeper too as after the patents for said hardware expired in 2003 you started seeing it everywhere such as with licensed plug & plays and other video game gadgets like the MyArcade mini arcades.

@KetsubanSolo
@KetsubanSolo 6 ай бұрын
@participatoroftomfoolery oh I imagine it would involve QUITE a rework. The Dreamcast Half-Life I get because those things were produced on proprietary GD-ROMs (the G stands for Gigabyte), and even when hackers found the MIL-CD exploit for self-booting games, they still had 700MB. Fitting that game onto an 64MB cartridge would probably involve cutting a ton of content, would probably require the Expansion Pak, and would probably still run at the speed of molasses. Basically if you compare some of the N64 VS Dreamcast ports, you can see what sacrifices had to be made to make it work.

I can imagine a Half: Life 1 working on N64... except it would probably have to be split onto 2 games. I mean I don't know for sure, whoever knew that ALL of RESIDENT EVIL 2 could've been ported to N64 whole and complete (nothing cut out**), but... maybe now during homebrew, something can be done that was an IMPOSSIBILITY for the N64 because of costs, namely, splitting a game into 2 game cartridges, the way bigger playstation games (like RE2) were released on multiple CD's cause CD's were cheap. But now that we're in the Homebrew era ... maybe it could be done.. I imagine maybe the first Cart will be HL1 up to Xen? And then the Xen levels be a second Cartridge? Kinda like how the Black Mesa mod was split? Again this is all ASSUMING that it would be impossible to cut things down enough to fit it all onto 1 64MB cart **except for a SHIT TON of bitrate/resolution for the cg/FMV cutscenes haha

Xeno Crisis is a multi platform game that if I know correctly started off as a homebrew Neo Geo game, giving it's arcade likeness a better home. It also has a robust Mega Drive/Genesis version before apparently landing on N64, where likely it's controller is main reason to pair N64 with more Xeno Crisis versions, as "digital twin stick" is a very good way to play the game. There is also ports on several modern platforms, even Vita. Correction but leaving my personal L: Mega Drive version is the first version with PC/ Steam in 2019 - > 2020 had a Dreamcast version - > 2021 Neo Geo and Neo Geo CD versions -> this year, 2023 where not only N64 version released, but also GameCube and SNES. Because of the very custom nature of the work needed, Neo Geo MVS/AES cartridge for Xeno Crisis costs hundreds of dollars. Neo Geo even in year 202X is not effing around.

its not even the limit, the max size (without bank switching) of an N64 cartridge is 4GB not 64MB as the PI bus has a 32 bit wide address bus, emulators and flashcarts are usually at most 64MB because they are primarily used to "backup" (pirate) commercial games which the largest was 64MB or those grey area ROM hacks. additionally with modern tech you can easily read from an SD card so technically the limit is currently around 2TB, although there is unlikely to ever be an N64 game that would practically be either size.

I'd have loved to hear you expand on the point at 3:30 onward about how game developers didn't have to follow standard practices. Nintendo weren't the only publisher on the console, third parties did exist. Even if fully voice acted real time cutscenes and 2 player co-op modes are unconventional, there are examples of both in games published on the console so they're clearly not limited by any standard practices there. Homebrew games feel like the same situation as indie games in general - a lower barrier for entry means there are more people out there who want to and are able to voice their creativity. You see these unconventional practices in homebrew games now because that's what people wanted to try, not because of any nebulous limits that may or may not have been put on developers in the 90s and 00s.

I just want to clarify that a demake is EXACTLY what portal 64 said and what you said a demake is, is exactly what a demake ISNT. A demake is the opposite of a remake, it’s creating a new version of a game to be able to play on an older system instead of a new one, and instead of improvements it often removes aspects in order for it to work. If it’s released on PC, well that kinda defeats the whole purpose doesn’t it? That’s no demake that’s just a retro looking version of a game, which is completely different then a demake.

Think the reason a lot of these new games for old consoles come out so good are because of two reasons: foresight, and passion. They have the foresight to see what past developers did wrong or right with the hardware, as well as identify new methods to maximize its usage via programming, and they have the passion to work with a console that’s almost 30 years old, where as past developers were just working with what they had available on the market at the time.

It's not just N64. Commodore PET, C64, Atari, NES... Pretty much every retro system has at least some people still making games for it.

I bought a newly released NES game back in 2019 called Micro Mages. I was enamoured in their dev videos making their game fit a cartridge file size of 32KB. I've never used it however as I got no NES and have not had one for 25 years.

Well 64MB of storage was laughably limited even for the time, PS1/Saturn was 2 years old by the time it launched.

making new games for old consoles has always been super interesting to me. you can tell me "this game i made is inspired by games on the [insert console]" and ill be like "oh thats cool" but if you follow up with "and it/an official version of it works on real hardware" i go apeshit. theres actually a puzzle game i love thats getting a real-hardware GBC port and might even get a real cartridge if they can find and afford a manufacturer and lemme tell you that is WONDERFUL to hear. put the petal crash onto my game bouy

I have this in the SEGA Genesis, but unless it's your editing (which I doubt) or the N64 port runs a little soft with the 2D sprites looking like they have anti-aliasing.?

There is a flip side on the fact we have way better compressions tools and method, and are just better programmers. While old hardware is still limiting. We can do more on it then when we could back when it was the current hardware.

Sad Micro Mages NES wasn't mentioned, guess you only explored this for the N64. Not sure if it was the biggest but it was the first one on my radar. I've also seen some New Super Mario games remastered for the SNES, mixed 2/3D and all.

Of a certain age? I bet I am about 6 or 7 years younger than that certain age and still have a great nostalgia for the N64 Lib ultra [The Nintendo 64 SDK] as it is seen in ocarina of time has been completely reverse engineered and parted to the PC as part of ship of harkinian, the PC port of the aforementioned ocarina of time

While watching this, I remembered that the trigger on the N64 controller is pulled with the left hand because it's on the back of the middle handle where the analog stick is. And I can't stop thinking about how weird that is now because PlayStation and Xbox games always have the trigger for guns and the throttle for vehicles on the right trigger. Could I even play an N64 now? Would it feel natural? I haven't tried since about 1999. I bet it would feel strange.
