I am not sure if you are aware of minimally invasive heart surgery. My dad had it as an alternative to open heart surgery. I have no idea if you are eligible for it but it is amazing. Rather than breaking your ribcage they access your heart via a small hole. He left the hospital after 1 day. There are only a few places in the world that offer it. We looked into a hospital in Chicago but he went to one in L.A. due to insurance reasons. Take care!

I've suffered from chronic pain since early high school, but since it was mild, and because I was a "dumb teenager who doesn't know anything and over-exaggerates", I never got treated or diagnosed for it. Now that I'm in my early 20s, and I went straight to a specialist, they actually seemed to take me more seriously. I'm actually getting an xray done for it today.

Aw man, I really hear you about being dismissed because of being young! It took 12 years for my chronic pain to be diagnosed. But don't panic - one of the reasons it took so long is because the understanding of my condition - Hypermobile EDS - changed radically in 2017. But I went through a lot of "You're too young for....". I know it can be tough, but stick at it, educate yourself and trust your own body. Best of luck! x

Well, I had it done with zero sedation. Wasn't fun at all, and yes - you can clearly feel where and what they are doing with the scope, even taking biopsies. Doctors lie :) EDIT: Doesn't mean the biopsies were painful, it's a tug with a bit of a pinch, slightest sting in my case. The experience of having a thick pipe in throat and trying to constantly swallow it is the most painful.

I recently had a colonoscopy. Same basic set up as yours...different door. Thank goodness for anesthesia that causes no memory. TBH, the endoscope down the throat isn't that big of a deal. Well, as long as you're not the homophobic type. It's just a tube that goes in the mouth and down the throat and as far as the uppermost reaches of the large intestine. It's really not that big of a deal as long as you remember that the tube isn't going to go into the lungs or anywhere that it's not supposed to go. Just relax, and the whole thing is over before too long. I haven't yet had a colonoscopy. But, I don't really get why that would be any bigger of a deal.

My colonoscopy was quite painful. Didn't have anaesthetic, just some gas (they wouldn't sedate me because I was making my own way home). The tube coiled up in my colon. Wasn't fun, but the overall experience wasn't as bad as I was expecting

I also had some pain that lasted a few months afterwards, but I was diagnosed with Crohns so these pains could’ve just been inflammation. I don’t think it would’ve been as bad if I was sedated

I wasn’t sedated for my colonoscopy either! I got to watch the insides of my intestines on a big monitor. It wasn’t particularly painful, though it felt kind of weird, and when the camera bumped me on he inside, I wondered if that was what it’s like to have a baby kick… which as a dude I guess I’ll never experience

Yeah. I've been in the hospital twice for intestinal surgery (the last time just a few weeks ago) and those tubes are the absolute worst. Power to you, hope you're doing well.

Why? The nose bit I can see being kind of annoying, but I had a biopsy done on my stomach via an endoscope as well as a quick look at the duodenum without any anesthetic apart from the spray for my tongue. I don't really understand why the doctor was so insistent that I had to have general anesthesia for it. But, I came alone and you can't really go home after that without somebody while it finishes wearing off.

I've had an endoscope go down my throat to look at my esophagus and a colonoscopy, both times I was not sedated. The endoscope made me anxious, but if I had to do it again I would not be sedated. After going through it once, I would be better able to handle how the tube feels in my mouth and throat and would know I wasn't going to choke or suffocate from it.

I'm going through a really rough patch in my life having to deal with loss, depression and changes in life that scare me. I've thought a lot about death and have had suicidal thoughts but recently I've realised that we truly only have one life to live in this world and that even though I make mistakes and life can be unforgiving - at the end of the day I'm lucky enough to be alive. I've been living my life now day by day and while I still feel mostly terrible life has become bearable and the moments that I enjoy I cherish all the more. If nothing matters at the end of the day than that means we mean everything to the people around us in the short time we can have together. Just happy to be alive and have people that love me even if everything else sucks.

I think I did need to hear that, Austin. I'm sitting here crying in a poorly lit apartment after being forced to move out of my home of 11 years JUST as I suddenly developed (as in the symptoms arrived on moving day) what appears to be the illness that almost caused my mother to bleed to death when I was a toddler. (It also stopped me from helping with the move, making everything suddenly much more expensive.) I already have an anxiety disorder, so a sudden heaping helping of trauma and terror isn’t doing me any favors. I just had to write a post to my Patreon followers to the effect of "can't work or brain rn, chapter delayed two weeks, but the protagonist will kick a N*zi in the head to make it up to you, hope that's okay." Thanks for making me feel a little less alone tonight. Here's hoping we both pull through.

6:00 Austin, as you were under anaesthesia at this time, it’s possible that you were falling into some type of hippocampal replay (the operation that occurs during REM sleep) and actually experiencing an egocentrically coded auditory / visual hallucination. Sometimes I get hypnopompic hallucinations when in bed, I had one that I was talking to someone, I actually nodded, woke myself up and realised I was in bed, sometimes I start doing maths and come up with a random number after a hypnopompic hallucination or say something.

Just had this done recenlty myself as I have AR from a leaky heart valve... I had such a horrible time. I became conscious while the probe was still down my throat and couldn't stop gagging... My EF is now at 48%, and even though I'm not showing any symptoms yet, I might need to have surgery soon... I'm so scared that I won't survive the surgery that I've been really depressed and sad. At least I know I'm not alone...

Try not to stress. Open heart surgery when it's planned ahead like it will be in your situation has an incredibly high survival rate so if it gets to that point for you you'll survive.

I had my open heart surgery last year to correct my congenital aortic valve stenosis. I know exactly what you mean by “waiting for it to get bad enough” before you can actually fix the issue. I had to wait until I was 31 years old before I could have my surgery. I was a candidate for and opted to have the Ross Procedure which allows me to avoid life long blood thinning medication for the time being. I’ve really enjoyed your health update videos. It’s always comforting knowing there are people similar in age that are having similar cardiovascular complications. You’re not alone in this.

I was born with tetralogy of fallout, I've had 2 heart surgeries. You and I are probably about the same age too (I was born in 1992). I've had one of those throat ultra sounds, they suck. I may have to have another surgery eventually and it scares the shit out of me. My best friend has a very similar (maybe the same?) condition and had to have surgery a few years ago after several years of monitoring. Unfortunately, my friend's dad hadn't been diagnosed until very recently at that time and was still waiting on a full evaluation... and died from the impacted valve bursting less than a week before my friend's surgery. Ever since then I've been way more keyed into these kinds of issues, and I'm glad to hear you have medical professionals looking out for you. Stay well, Austin!

I hope they’ll be able get you fixed up soon, I can’t imagine how stressful it must be knowing you’re right there where you need the surgery but can’t get it yet. You’re much more brave and composed than I could ever be in that situation.
