Much like my goal of a 20" Smallie (I'm 1/4" short) in the Mid-Atlantic, it's not going to be easy to get a chunk Sunnie, in your neck of the woods. Good idea and good stuff! Don't overlook the Finese TRD- 1/32 and Big TRD - 1/16 or 1/32 (depending on the fall-rate desire). Chunk Sunnies will hit the Big TRD all day long.

You have to fish the Lakes that hold 10” Gills to come close to catching one. Very rare around our area Ethan.
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
This is true. That is why I want to take the challenge and tell the story... Lots of folks don't put conservation first in our area so we have smaller bluegill than we should. I caught my 10" bluegill, Ohio Master Angler, last summer from a public lake(what Ohioans call a large pond) from shore. Good luck. I have been fishing many years and you will know when you get one. I thought it was a bass it hit so hard and bent my rod so much. I went back to the same spot this year, but am only getting 8 max. Someone probably took it home for dinner.
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
Yeah those 10-inchers are few and far between in a lot of lakes. Lots of folks keep fish so it can be tough to find them that big. That said, I know it will happen! Just don't know when XD
@stephenstalter24813 жыл бұрын
@@FishAnything Did you ever get the ten? I tried for a few weeks(because I thought you were subtly trying to issue a challenge) before I gave up and just took another job for the summer. I was also trying to catch an orange spotted which was pretty futile. The biggest gill I got all summer was a 9.25 from one of my spots. I also use red worms which you might consider cheating considering you are catching on artificial. I hope that new baby isn't keeping you up all night.

All waters don't have 10" gills present. My home waters 8" gills are the alpha males and I have only caught 1 or 2 10" gills over the last 20 years. However I have a lake I travel to and the first time I fished it I caught 3 10" gills in the same day. Catching big ones consistently is as hard as catching big bass maybe even harder.
@FishAnything2 жыл бұрын
Living in areas with any population density whatsoever does not help. People eat too many gills off beds and it causes our lakes to have historically small fish. There are VERY FEW lakes in my area that have 10" genetic fish around. Really frustrating but I can't do much about it :/

@@FishAnything That's actually a pretty cool, cheap rod. "Absolute Unit!" Man, I wouldn't even know where to begin on the pursuit of a 10" Bluegill. I guess, just get out there and plug away. And keep your bug in the water. I think this is going to be hard, like the pursuit of a 22" largemouth. But yeah man, it's all about learning as an angler and appreciating all of it.
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have no idea what I am doing haha but I am learning as I go. That is the point - just trying to create more intention to my ultralight trips in an effort to increase my knowledge of the big gills.

Interesting that your MA bass and bluegill is 22 and 10 inches respectively. Nebraska is 20 and 10. I will say catching a 20+ bass is more common than 10+ bluegill.
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree with that. Honestly I think 22" and 10" is the right place to be. 10-inchers happen but it takes a good amount of fishing & the right bodies of water. 22" bass are pretty dang tough to catch but I think 20" wouldn't be challenging enough.
