Really cool to meet new volunteers and see them doing stuff. The section with the comm jacks was actually interesting.

Glad you liked it! There are more volunteers here than have been shown. Not everyone wants to be on the camera and I try to be respectful of that.

That mask and headset tester is a nice piece of gear! Electrical connections, and the associated connectors, always seemed like the most common form of failure for any sort of avionics. Maybe not a surprise, considering all of the handling and abuse that they tend to receive? Glad that you identified the location of your problem.

Yeah, that test set is really nice, and certainly was incredibly handy. Will make short work of putting together working headsets. And yes, my experience with headsets on ships is that they tend to get banged up with use. Can't imagine the flight line being a less forgiving environment.

Thank you for showing at 2:15 a Kurnass from the 69th Hammers. I had the privilege to maintain them in the early '90s. They had a long and lustrous service from 1969 through 1996. Nothing else sounded like a pair of J-79 thundering down the runway with a full payload.

My pleasure! That was one of the cool screenshots I took of the F-4 in DCS recently. The Hammers F-4 is a great looking livery in DCS, and I think Heatblur may have recently added another Hammers livery, that one being a Karpada. I'll be sure and look next time I fly in DCS.

@@DieselThunderAviation I never saw a Kurnass in USAF livery, as by the time I was serving they had all been repainted long ago. But there were a few wing droptanks in the squadron still in dark USAF jungle green paint. Some of them were rather scruffy and dented, I don't know if they were period to Vietnam or not from 20 years prior. The connection to the USAF and the intense operations in Vietnam did seem fitting. Merry Christmass to you and yours.

There's also a picture I have somewhere in my camera roll of a Kurnass-esque Phantom paint scheme with a USAF roundel which I'm assuming is a pre-sale Phantom much like the Asia-Minor one in DCS

I'm not into DCS, the fact that you guys are working on a project like that is amazing. I wish you all the success in the world as you create! Merry Christmas to all you Phantom Phans!

Whether you know it or not, you've answered a long-running question I've had about how guys get inside cockpit footage with the crew audio.
@DieselThunderAviation8 күн бұрын
There are a few different ways of going about it. The real trick is getting (or making) the right adapter cable, and sending the audio into a standalone audio recorder, mixing console, or camera audio feed. In this case it's to the mic port on the GoPro Media Mod attachment.

The face he makes at 11:32 when he says, "Im going to edit that out," is so funny, considering he, in fact did not edit it out

Didn't think that it sounded good when I said that though ended up being funny when I watched it, so I left it in!

There should be a headset with a chrome frame (unless it got misplaced). I know the mic has already been changed out.

I'll be sure and look around for it next time at the hangar. Thanks for the heads up!

It makes me so happy to see the electronic elves out there leaving all kinds of presents for me to enjoy when I come down next week!! Nice work guys!!!

For sure, we made some good headway with it, and should be able to explain why next week as well.

We had a homemade tester in our support. Guys would sign out headsets and cables and run a quick check before going out.. A little history; the big black clunky headset were XF3, field repairable. In the mid eighties, we started getting some lighter weight ones that ended up being XB3, disposable. I tried and couldn't fix them, then I submitted a form 1000 to make them repairable. Unfortunately, supply guys couldn't read blue tags and ended up throwing the examples I had away instead of shipping them to Rickenbacker.

It is a true military bureaucracy that the Air Force & Navy can not talk to each other 🤣🧐😝
@DieselThunderAviation8 күн бұрын
Right! What I think it boils down to is that each branch came up with their own standards for crew com and radio specifications and then used different plugs and connectors. Then you end up with oddballs like the Air Force F-4's which was a Navy design. Not sure how much the Air Force changed with the comms stuff from what the Navy used, if they changed anything.
