Lovely segment on Italy. Living in a picturesque part of Italy is a dream for many who visit. The reality is most Italians live in large nondescript housing blocks in the cities and not on a beautiful vineyard or charming village. That said if you have lots of cash you can create a very pleasant life in Italy as friends of ours have in Tuscany.

Not true ,really not true. Only the big cities have suburban area with housing blocks. But most of the italians live in the 10000 villages or centre town or residential area. Not more than 20 per cent of italians live in ugly housing blocks. A flat in a old village is also less expensive

This really makes the process seem simpler than it actually is. I have dual citizenship now but I had to go through the Italian court system to be recognized as such because of a quirk in Italian law that didn't allow women to pass citizenship to their children prior to 1948. Yes, a person can do the work themselves in many cases but it's still a good idea to at least consult with an Italian immigration attorney, if not retain one. As a side note, Mark Phillips seems to speak decent Italian.

My nephew (less than a year younger than I am) did this and is now living in Puglia. His grandparents were still Italian citizens when his mother (my sister-in-law) was born in Los Angeles. La Dolce Vita is not realistic for all to expect but Italy won't discourage this trend either. Their ethnically Italian population has decreased at the same time migrants, who are not acculturating or paying a fair share of taxes, continue to arrive on their shores. I can't see Italy allowing droves of 60, 70, 80 year olds to return. There are obvious economic benefits of accepting working age people, which will be a major deciding factor when countries can exercise the right to cherry-pick permanent citizens. Those able to prove they share a common ancestry will naturally be given preferential status.

The piece does not say what the status of the law is. It doesn't even say whether the few people featured in the piece gained citizenship or not. It doesn't even say how their cases are being decided. It obfuscates its lack of clarity with the word "potentially" peppered throughout. Is it a secret? Why can't you say how it is being decided, who is eligible, and what the exact steps in the process are? Anyone can "potentially" be an immigrant to another country.

You can find the info to check if you qualify for Italian citizenship online. Your Italian born relative(s) can’t have denounced their Italian citizenship when they were granted American citizenship. Otherwise you might not qualify. But the Italian consulate in your town should know lawyers that can help with getting it done usually.

Since I a am Italian born, I have been aware of this rule for quite some time. We used to get ballots to vote in our town's election but if we did, we would forfeit our American citizenship. Interesting story but requires a lot of research before taking the plunge. Sounds great when you're on vacation but the reality of living there is much harder.
@donnamaurillo4160

You do not forfeit American citizenship if you vote in Italy. I am getting my dual citizenship because my grandfather was still an Italian citizen when my father was born here. In fact, he was still an Italian citizen when I was born. So Italy considers me to be Italian "by right of blood". I'm in the process of collecting the documents to prove it. Then I can have an Italian passport. That alone will allow me to live and work just about anywhere in the EU.
