I have a lot of admiration for Roja and his deep knowledge of perfumery, but there are a few questions I have that have been on my mind. Just to preface this, I am a hobbyist perfumer myself, so I have a fair understanding of what goes into making a fragrance. In an interview with Frag-Mental, Roja said that his perfumes are 80% natural materials compared to the industry standard 10%. My question is, given how heavily restricted natural materials are, with staples like Rose absolute being limited to 0.01% of a finished product by IFRA, how does Roja achieve this high degree of natural materials? Given that jasmine is limited to a similar degree and oakmoss, a note he uses regularly, even further. Is Roja's conception of natural materials those that are found in nature, but can be synthesized in a lab? Or the use of materials that are explicitly extracted from natural sources? Secondly, here Roja leads us to believe that he creates the compositions himself, talking of blending etc. But I have heard rumors, that in actuality, he writes the briefs for what he wants the fragrance to smell like, and then sends the brief to Robertet for in-perfumers to fulfill the brief. With that in mind, does Roja create the compositions for the final perfumes? Or is the creative process outsourced to an institution such as Robertet? Or, does Roja create the compositions himself, and then send in the formula for mass production and conformity tweaking? As a final word, I just want to say that I am a fan of Roja's creations, A Midsummer Dream is one of my favourites, and I find him endlessly fascinating as a person. I don't mean to be combative with my line of questioning, but these questions have been swirling around for a while, indeed among other perfumers I am acquainted with, some professional.

Hi There, Thanks for your question. Totally understand your quest for knowledge as the Perfumery world is so vast and complex and misinformation can easily happen. I used to write to perfume houses all the time in my youth, looking for answers and information. I create the blend for each Roja Parfums scent myself, from the comfort of my home. This is no secret as there are plenty of interviews and videos out there that show me doing this. I work from my custom-made Perfumers Organ, which has small versions of all the natural raw materials I work with (the larger versions I keep on shelves in my home but aren't great for transporting/working from). I sit and blend, weigh and notate the formula and when I have completed this (could be anywhere from a few months to a few years) I send the formula to Grasse to be compounded. So I personally create each SCENT but I don't hand-make each BOTTLE of scent because that would be impossible to do. When it comes to naturals, I only work with the finest quality materials and I am lucky to be able to have access to these. What I believe I was referring to was that around 80% of my work is done with natural materials, whilst the remaining I might use something interesting from science, such as Aldehydes, or the interesting Musk top note found in my creation Elysium. Best wishes, Roja

@@rojadove4680 Wow! Thank you for the informative and sincere reply Mr. Dove. Yes, I was always of the school that erred on the side that you created your own formulas, with the rumors most likely stemming from the bottling side of the process. Of course, what you say with regards to bottling is perfectly reasonable. The fact you have your creations bottled and reproduced in Grasse speaks volumes about the level of quality you seek to maintain. Seeing as I have you here, I should take the opportunity to thank you for all the high quality compositions you continue to put out. As soon as I smelled A Midsummer Dream I was transported to an English forest grove on a warm summer's day, it was rather uncanny. A resinous, sweet, citrusy, and green dream. Thank you for answering my questions so candidly, and with such courtesy, Mr. Dove. I wish you continued success and I pray IFRA and EU regulators leave both you and me to our devices! Regards.

I sometimes don't understand accents or sloppy spoken words since I am not a native speaker. therefore I use auto-generated English subtitles in order to read these words that I didn't catch clearly with my ears. anyways, auto-generated subtitles having the same issue, sometimes. not with this man. This seems to be the cleanest spoken English. I just felt the need to say that.

I'm trying to decide between Reckless and Danger pour femme, I dont live near any place that I can test your gorgeous creations. I love gourmands and I love orientals. Your advice would be so very much appreciated sir. Sincerely, Perfume4paws
@rojadove4680
@rojadove4680 5 жыл бұрын
Dear Janell, Thank you for your interest. Reckless is a Floral creation, whilst Danger is an Oriental, so if you know you like Orientals, then Danger is your girl. However, if you like gourmands, then Sweetie Aoud (which is also an Oriental) could be a good idea? If it helps, each scent is made in a 7.5ml Discovery Atomiser, which allows you to wear the fragrance and take it with you, without having to commit to the whole bottle. Best wishes, Rx

I love how well spoken you are. You and Tom Ford have luxurious sexy voices. I'm obsessed with voices, Morgan Freeman has the best narrative voice. I like that you are doing these videos, just wish I had the money for your fragrances. Instead of collecting pure oud oils I wish I would have got Amber Aoud and Taif Oud. Those are my favorite notes by themselves. Rose is beautiful I love Sri Lankan oud and Damascus rose. I wonder what Rose would go with Ceylon Oud. Maybe Taif, Sri Lankan oud, sandalwood, patchouli, benzoin, and ambergris. lol I'd call it a Beautiful Mess.

No problem your the reason everything else in my collection is collecting dust since I bought my first roja I haven't bought a full bottle of anything else since its not just the ingredients the blending is like nothing else I've smelled and I've smelled hundreds of fragrances pikovaya dama and goodnight kiss smelled similar to my nose before it matured some but now smelling goodnight kiss it's has so much more depth and a lot more complex it's like eating fast food compared to a five star restaurant the fast food is filling but the gourmet restaurant is a much more pleasurable experience for the taste buds so as is your fragrances for the nose I have complete confidence whenever I wear a roja I'll be the most luxurious smelling person around Worth every penny I've smelled a lot of your fragrances and nothing off-putting even so smooth and seamless if someone don't like your fragrance house it's not the fragrances it just that their noses can't appreciate the highest level of perfumery yet

Have you ever worked with natural musk? In my opinion I think they have banned the best ingredient in perfumery. Yesterday I smelled diaghilev for the first time. I need some time to assimilate it. It's glorious. Good for you. I still have a long way to go to discover this house. I just smelled Danger, Risque and Diaghilev. From the little I've smelled it seems to me to be one of the best niche houses

Hi, I apologise for the rather home-grown quality of most of my videos. We are slowly trying to improve the quality, and hopefully sound will improve from now on. It is of course, as you can imagine, a bit difficult filming in a retail space, as there will always be background noise. But we are trying :) thank you for watching! Rx
