I’m a HUGE fan of the entire Aquaphor line-ever since it was prescribed as a compounding base for my radiation burn topical treatment after breast cancer radiation treatment. It is amazing stuff that I’ve found extremely healing of numerous skin issues-even very delicate/fragile skin areas. It turns very dry, atrophied, rough skin-even skin that includes tiny tears-into smooth, supple, moist skin. It also takes whitish-colored dry skin and brings back normal pinkish coloring. It can also relieve skin burning caused by severe dryness. I also love the Vanicream line!! I would use their Lip Protectant with SPF 30. Vanicream is developed for people with super sensitive skin.

With all due respect to your comments on Aesop being hair and body, I lived in Australia for 3 years and Aesop is huge on the high-end skincare/natural market. I use their parsley seed face wash and their scrub products on my face and a serum that has niacinimide/vitamin C and other stuff. They have a lot of different face creams with various use cases that I also use regularly. I’d love to hear your take on them. They don’t have much with active ingredients like retinol and other stuff that I use regularly but I’m a huge fan of their products and quality. Definitely pricey though - especially in the US - 30% cheaper in Australia.

Fantastic episode. To weigh in on the spa vs efficacy debate, I came to Doctorly to figure out what was wrong with my skin. Turns out the fragrance in a very expensive "spa brand" (Le Labo Té Noir) was the culprit. I binged watched alllll the episodes and completely revamped my skin care routine. It doesn't mean I stopped using it completely (it smells so goooood ugh), but now I know what to expect of my skin if I want to use it - even sparingly. I think it would be awesome to have a breakdown of some of these consumer trends - especially the risks and rewards of use. I know it has really helped me be more intentional with the products I use on my face and body!

Triple bonus points for your correct use of Occam's Razor 👏👏👏 Please talk more about Castor Seed Oil in lip products. I had the same lip ballooning/peeling reaction to it that some people are attributing to Aquaphor. You mentioned it briefly in one of your earlier videos which led me to check the ingredients in all of my lip care and lip color products. It was in everything. I immediately removed products containing it from my lip care routine and my lip color products, switched to CeraVe Healing Ointment and my lips healed almost overnight. Not kidding it was like a miracle. I now take great care to make sure that Castor Seed Oil (ricinus communis) isn't in any of my lip products. I haven't experienced any swelling or peeling since eliminating Castor Seed Oil.

Yes, listen to you for the actual, proven science. I am a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant. And because I'm cynical. So your information has not only provided guidance, but in combination with the clinical research our company gives us, I have been able to use other authoritative sources, like the Cleveland Clinic, to better understand ingredients and their mechanisms and purposes. Now I am confident that I understand what's real and why, to help my customers get the best bang for their buck. Thanks, doctors, I just ordered the Aquaphor lip balm with 30 SPF. I’m not happy with the lip balm I’ve been using (Blistex), it has menthol or camphor, or something like that, in it that makes my lips tingle, almost burn. It also has only SPF 15. I’ve tried a few other SPF 30 lip balms, but they’re super dry and waxy-feeling, and have a chalky look, not what I what. I need something really moisturizing for my lifelong, chronic chapped lips. When I earned my first babysitting money at age 10, I spent it all on lip balm, I couldn’t stand my dry, cracked lips. Petrolatum feels good, but doesn’t have sunscreen and isn’t convenient to apply, I much prefer a lipstick-style applicator. I love Laniege for at night, and after brushing my teeth (even “mild” toothpaste burns my sensitive lips), but don’t want to have to deal with the pot and brush, I just apply lip balm too often for that to be convenient.

I have rosacea too and have found that the best facial sunscreens for me have been some of the ones from Korea. The Beauty of Joseon Sun Relief SPF 50 PA++++ is my favorite because it can act as a moisturizer as well as a sunscreen. It is not greasy at all and absorbs into the skin and does not sting the eyes. It is not water resistant so it is not good for a day at the beach or sports etc. or if your face is sweating heavily. It feels like applying a light hydrating lotion to the skin. There are several other brands that have excellent reputations as well but I haven't tried them. Kelly Driscoll has a KZbin channel about them if you are interested.
