Usually the really high end stuff is the snake oil. The most effective ingredients are usually medicines, which are normally not that expensive. Once you start introducing golden flakes or whatever the celebrities are peddling, it gets expensive.

Most overpriced products are actually shit and is just priced so high because of the brand. Its the ingredients that matter in a product.

@@intelligenthuman3262 some of the cheaper products that have the same ingredients may not have the same quality of ingredients tho, and the product may not work as well because the formula isnt as advanced. Ingredients are very important tho. Good skincare does not have to be expensive

Good rule of thumb is that no skin product that works should cost more than $30 for a 30 day supply, and even that is kind of high if you ask me.

video notes Excuse the spelling. 1. are vitamin A derivatives (adapalene, tretnoid, retinol) 2. anti-acne, improves hyperpigmentation, improves appearance pores, anti aging, improves skin texture 3. retinol is less strong and irritating then tretinoid 4. picking the right retinoid-based off of strength 1. retinol - good for sensitive skin 2. tretinoid more effective then OTC products. not necessarily more irritating. 3. retinol, adapalene, retanal, tretinoid, zaratine - level of irritation least to most. 4. use differen gel adapline for acne. 5. use 1. start low then go high.less irritating option. so skin has gotten used to it. 2. start with using it every other day. skin needs time to adapt 3. flaking and irritation is expected, which means it is working. peak of irritation is 2-3 weeks. after the skin will calm down and be less irritating. skin might get worse b4 better. 4. after a month or so start doing it every day. then see how u do. then u can increase to twice a day IF u want/can. 5. if you have sensitive skin then start with every 3rd night for 1 month -> every 2nd night for 1 month -> then every night for 1 month 6. if you have sensitive skin then moisturizer first then apply retinoid and then moisturize again. 7. use small amount, pea-size amount. 8. after cleansing and then moisturize right away. 9. protect sensitive areas. if your eye area is sensitive then apply moisturizer on eye lid before apply retinoid. only if that area is sensitive for you. if it is not then apply retinoid first due to benefits. 10. time: stick with it. time till benefits anti-aging 3-6 months, hyperpigmentation 3 months.

You mentioned Differin in a video I watched just before going to the US. (Canadian) I had no idea I could get it prescription free. Having used it under a dermatologist’s supervision as a teen and then moving and no longer having a dermatologist as an adult - I was so excited I came home with three bottles. Just a week later (layering it under moisturizer and barely putting any on as I remember how hard it is to start) skin pigmentation from old acne is going away and my hormonal acne is finally calmer. You guys just made a huge difference in my quality of life. I hope this comment makes your day!

i've had cystic, hormonal acne every since my late teen years. i had tried everything from spending 100s of dollars on products and doing the famous 10-step korean skincare routine, to trying the basic minimalist route, and everything in between. the only thing that cleared my face was taking birth control (which i hated because i get all the bad side effects)... until i started using a topical retinol. the day after i applied it for the first time, i had the hugest, most painful cystic bumps all over my face. they hung out for over a week before disappearing and i haven't broke out at all in over a month. my acne scars were fading by week 2, my skin texture is the smoothest its ever been, my tone is super even, and my pores are barely visible. retinol is really a holy grail product 🙏

The purge should be mentioned!!!!!! Retinoids create skin cell turnover, right? So, this is what causes flakiness if you get that. But also, brings things to the surface quicker so to speak. The purging period happens differently for different people, mine happened at the beginning to very quickly, that’s what this commenter is describing. Some people purge for weeks on end. JUST DO NOT GIVE UP LIKE THE DOCS SAID. I am personally on adapalene (differen .3% prescription). I also do moisturizer first then the retinoid. And nightly. My skin texture changed within days. I adore retinoids.

Only recently discovered this channel and am now binge-watching. These guys are great! The only thing I would have added to this is reinforcing that people MUST use sunscreen when using retinoids. Of course people should be using sunscreen religiously anyway, but it's hugely important when using retinoids (or any actives that are exfoliants). Living in Australia makes you really conscious of this. Will carry on bingeing this channel! ❤

Would you make a video about how to make a skincare routine for the week that’s safe? For example, what i can layer and how to spread out using retinoid and exfoliating acids over the week?
@dvnv9476
@dvnv9476 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aliyah! I'm a board certified Esthetician of 10+ years. If you already have an exfoliating acid that you like and know how your skin reacts with, then once a week (in your PM routine only) replace your Retinoid with your exfoliating treatment. For example: Say you use The Ordinary's AHA+BHA. You'll cleanse your face, apply the treatment for the recommended amount of time, wash off then follow with your PM routine **MINUS THE RETINOID**. The next day and evening you'll want to focus on barrier repair, so avoid any actives, Retinoids or other possibly irritating products. If you are new to exfoliating acids then do this once every TWO weeks for two months (don't forget to patch test first!!). This will allow your skin time to adjust to the new treatment without overly irritating or damaging it. Hope this helps! Don't hesitate to message me with further questions.

Retinoids and ahas are similar products and mixing them has been known to cause chemical burns and long term skin damage. Vitamin c serums are not advised to use at the same time and typically are morning use to protect skin during the daytime from damage but need a sunblock added after it absorbs. I trade out my night time products. Retinol is couple of nights a week. Alpha hydrox a couple of nights, copper peptides a few nights..hope this helps.

@@wydmatt7294 no problem at all! sorry for my late response - I literally just got a notification of your reply today when I'm an avid user of KZbin, and I see that I'm already a month late... please don't take offense! I chose the CeraVe resurfacing retinol because it was one of the recommended starter retinoid products from the Doctorly channel. it has a really low concentration of retinol, which is suitable for people with more sensitive skin like myself, so they can start more gently. I just followed the rule of threes from Dr. Shah: I started by applying it once every three nights for the first month, then once every other night for the second month, and then every night as tolerated for the third! I sandwich my retinol application between two applications of lightweight moisturizer for the first few weeks and also slowed my use of other actives like glycolic acid until after the first few weeks. there have been some tingling involved, but I'm doing well on it so far! I'm going into my third month while on it with no obvious, perceivable improvements yet (I should take comparison photos) but I'm keeping at it! good luck!

@JD Yes, retinoids should only be used at night. Sun exposure actually reduces their efficacy, so you want them working while the sun isn't out and you're sleeping. They also make your skin somewhat more sensitive to the sun (consistently, not just right after using), so sunscreen use is even more important than it is normally.

@mateogutierrez1675
@mateogutierrez1675 3 жыл бұрын
According to Dr. Dray’s KZbin channel, the apply every 2 hours is more bc people don’t apply enough the FIRST time they apply, so they aren’t really getting the spf on the label, but just half of it. If you are almost certain you applied enough, and you aren’t in an environment where you’re sweating a lot or exposed to direct sun, you most likely don’t need to reapply , one application should be fine. If you’re working an 8 hour shift and you’re by a window, maybe then during your lunch break put some more on and that should be effective too.

The pharmacist told my mom that I needed to turn the lights off and go to bed immediately and always wash my face well the next morning to avoid skin cancer! My thought was how was an oil going to help with my oily skin. Less than two weeks later, I was scratching my nose in math class and huge flakes of skin fell off my nose. I peeled hard skin off my nose. I had pretty bad acne but thanks to that Retin A I don't have acne scarring at all. @@rotem1437 you can have the lights on in your house while using retinol. You can't go into the sunlight. That's why you use it before bedtime.

I would love a video on tazarotene! I feel like theirs so much info out there about adapalene and tretinoin, but almost nothing on tazarotene. I use tazarotene cream 0.1% everynight and it works so well for my acne but I actually don't know much about it. I would love to know more about it and how it works, and im sure others would to!

Yeah. It was my first time hearing tazarotene also! How did you get it? Do you need a prescription for it? What's your experience since using it?

I have retinol dermatitis after i used it two times. I put a lot of it without researching how to use it first. Now I'm waiting for my face to heal and start retinol again. This video really helped a lot. Im thinking about throwing away my retinol bottle after what happened to my face 😂 but now that i watched it, im gonna use retinol again with their instructions. Thanks doc!!
