Yes! “Jim Joins the Network” (S04E04) aired Oct. 29, 1981. Since it would have been written during the summer of 81, it’s safe to say it was inspired by this story. Good episode! Martin Short and Christopher Lloyd together!

@@seka1986 he sometimes ate at a restaurant my mom worked as a waitress. Occasionally, I would be in the break room waiting for my mom to get off work. I had met him a few times briefly. But we didn’t speak other than a brief polite greetings. I knew to not bother any customers. One day he decided to ask me to sit at his table and bought dinner. I don’t think he wanted to be alone. He was quiet and profoundly sad. But he did ask a few questions and seemed amused at my dumb kid answers. I just remember wishing I understood why he was so sad. I wished I had asked but I felt like he didn’t invite me to eat with him to ask him why he was sad. I think I was there so he didn’t have to think as much about whatever he was struggling with. This would have been around 1982 or 1983.

I remember an interview with Sonny Bono where he guested on _Fantasy Island_ in 1978 and mistakenly referred to Tattoo as "Pontoon" and got kicked in his shin by Villechaize. After asking himself, "Why am I doing this" he eventually quit acting and got into politics by running for (and becoming) Mayor of Palm Springs in 1988.

I must admit that I haven't watched any Fantasy Island reruns for ages but from memory, the storylines after "Tattoo" had left just weren't really good anymore. I liked Christopher Hewett but the stories were a little underwhelming. But then again, I might decide I was wrong if I do decide to rewatch FI. 😁

I've been re-watching Fantasy Island and I'm currently on season 5 when they replaced Tattoo and you're right, the fantasies got quite silly. The show went from being well written and acted to childish fantasies like a 90 lb weakling becomes the strongest man on earth after drinking a potion Mr. Roarke gives him or a nerd who can't get a woman becomes a stud who women can't resist. I'm actually surprised it lasted another 2 seasons after that.

Why would he be happy to have have a minor role? It made the limitations of his health more psychologically distressing, not less. He was an actor and an artist trying to have a career that was not limited by his size, and a life that was more than living in the margins of his pain and struggling health.

This makes no sense at all! Villechaize' ambitions aside, the entire scandal hinges on Dean's fanciful claim of being a psychic. But she seemingly actually did have an ear to industry scuttlebutt, she actually did have a sense of popular taste apparently missing from the executive stratum, and she actually did do the work. Did no one think of uttering the words “it's a joke” when it could not conceivably have been anything else?

The only character I recall from the show was Tattoo. So it's clear, he was the show's draw. As for the psychic, all they had to do was put her down as a "creative consultant" and leave it at that. If they had any balls at all, they would have defended her. "Sure she has a schick on the side, but we hire her for her insight into the shows, not the crystal ball." But Hollywood and especially TV is gutless. Use them up, toss them out, find a new one.

You know one sentence in this sent me on a mental rabbit hole... Actors of smaller stature like this must have a much harder on set. It has to be really hard to get a stand in for them so they more than likely have to do a lot of their own stunts. And granted, its not like Tattoo was doing a lot of stunts but I am talking about other movies and shows here... I never even really thought about that before today.

Stand ins aren't just for stunts, they fill in when the star is shown from an angle that you can't really see their face, mostly from behind. Don't forget one scene can take hours to get right so they like to have a stand in for scenes when the actor can be replaced so they can take a break.

Interesting stuf. I am a journeyman actor / stunt performer. It is such an age old story of popular actors as characters being under valued. The adage everyone is replaceable does not always ring true in Hollywood. After all Fan is just short for Fanatic. And fans do not like change in their shows. Not that familiar with Fantasy Island, although I am familiar with the story of actor Hervé Villechaize, Peter Dinklage played him in 'My Dinner with Hervé' 2018. Peter is very good value. Great video. They should have kept Deen on. They could have just said her psychic thing was separate to her work for them and emphasised how good she was at picking out hit shows. I saw that film during February 2020 (it was one of the final films I saw in theaters. Theaters shutdown for several months starting March 13th, 2020 and didn't reopen for a long while and my habit of going to the movie theater weekly fell off pretty hard as I got use to streaming). I thought the 2020 Fantasy Island film was okay. NOT great (the old TV show is so much better) but not the worse as I've seen far worse films. It was okay. I had a mixed reaction towards it. Somethings I like (I do like actress Lucy Hale, even if some others don't. I like her stuff) but somethings I didn't like (I normally like Michael Pena, but he felt miscast as Mr.Roarke) and while I thought the film was okay overall, it's NOT something I would recommend to loyalists of the old TV show due to the very significant differences between the TV show and movie.
