I think the key death key setups are connected to the amount of red coins you have, even when collected they count towards their specific sprite limit, therefore when you return to CP without any coins more stuff can spawn & magic you up a key.

Key deaths are all about which checkpoint you respawn at and the consequent current on/off state... it's actually easier than it seems (still: not "easy" per say, but less complicated than it looks like).

You think Dave will learn at one point that the unique trait of many key deaths is that you revive at checkpoint 2, which is normally impossible to do since there is no way to kill yourself between checkpoint 2 and checkpoint 1 (unless you time out).

HEY DAVE, I GOT SOME CHEESE FOR YOU. how troll key death works: before cp1: respawns at the begining, during red coin hunt: respawns at cp1, if get coin: coin>>>cp2>>>cp1. If have all coins coin>>>cp2>>>DOOR.(note the lack of collecting CP1) after key death: respawn at cp instead of cp1 There are only 2 things that carry information over death: redcoins and which checkpoint you spawn at. each phase uses a different checkpoint so it "remembers" what phase you are in. The reason that the key is only given after you die is because the on off blocks are set to blue it the previous rooms. When you respawn, they are reset to red so the level can detect if it's a respawn, if so it grants you the key. One thing that I don't think many creators realise is that you can still do a checkpoint one troll by sending a player back to cp1 then killing them so the game thinks that the player is in the red coin gauntlet. EDIT:this creater is an exception. I made this comment before that part. this is the first time I saw someone do it if you want to skip to the phase after a key death from the beginning of the red coin gauntlet, you only need to die on the first checkpoint of the reusable cp(in your case CP2). That means: 1)you can cheese a troll level with a key death by timeing out after collecting the first checkpoint of the reusable cp(in your case CP2). You only need to get to the begining of the reuseable checkpoint before using the cheese. 2) there are no trolls directly after the checkpoint, because if there were, a player could discover the cheese by accident. this cheese is literally impossable to patch out because it is triggered by death inbetween the 2 checkpoints and since they can't be in the same world and you can't be forced to go in a pipe. You can always time out and cheese the mechanisms. Due to this impossibility. be humble in how you use the cheese. I recommend only using it in super expert no skip if you are low on lives. Anyway, goodbye.
