Something the game doesn't tell you all that well, all crafting stations will pull from inventories either adjacent or diagonal to them. So putting all your metal bars and ingredients into a chest and setting your crafting table near it, will allow you to craft without needing the items in your inventory. This also works for scrap and repairing.
