Then the world saw you jump indoors at 2.06 and we all knew and believed you had the potential and the destiny to break this longstanding and seemingly insurmountable WR of 2.09. And today you did it, and you did it with the joy and the effortless style that is your true gift. The bar at 2.10 seemed barely an obstacle as you took flight and in the blink of an eye you were over!! I'm a former international track-and-field athlete, a long jumper. Mahuchick is one of my favourite female athletes. When she cleared 2.07 so cleanly, I thought:" She would have cleared 2.10 with that jump". And I shouted inwardly "go for the world record". And sure enough, she broke the world record, with the slightest of brushes on the bar, similarly to how Konstantinova cleared 2.09 in 1987.

I first spotted Yaroslava Mahuchikh when she was 17 and jumping 1.95-1.98 fairly regularly and making appearances in Diamond League meetings. It occurred to me that she would definitely be one to watch. The number one Ukrainian - and world number 2 at the time - was Yulia Levchenko, for whom there was a lot of enthusiasm. Of the two, I thought Mahuchikh's late teenage performances put her in a better position. Whereas Levchenko had been stuck for three years at 1.92, Mahuckikh was powering through but she was still very young. Then came the World Championships in Doha and Mahuckikh not only jumped 2.00 metres in a major event but set a new world junior record of 2.02 and then upped it further to 2.04 in the same event, finishing with a silver medal. She had turned 18 only two weeks earlier. A couple of years ago she jumped 2.06 indoors. Fast forward to this week and it was at this event in Paris that she upped her personal best to 2.07. Then she jumped 2.10 on her first attempt and the rest is history. At the time of her Doha silver medal I described her as 'a once in forty year talent' and I've stood by that, even if her successes seemed to be less consistent than I expected. That said, there was really nobody I could see seriously challenging her when it came to outright height. If anyone was going to do it, it would be Mahuchikh. And so it goes. If anyone is going to break the old seven foot mark, it's probably her. But world records don't come easily and the fact that it took 37 years to break Kostadinova's record is something of a pointer to what we can realistically expect. It might not sound like much but 3 cms is a long way in an event like the high jump. For the record, I was actually able to name all ten of the women who have done 2.05 or better without looking them up. I think I have the heights right: Babakova 2.05 (her national record was broken when Mahuchikh jumped 2.07 and then again when she jumped 2.10) Chicherova 2.07 Hellebaut 2.05 Kostadinova 2.09 Andonova 2.07 Mahuchikh 2.10 Vlasic 2.08 Lasitskene 2.06 Bergquist 2.08 (indoors) Cloete 2.06 Correct me if I'm wrong.

The 80's athlete had a much greater clearance @ 2.09m ...She could have cleared 2.11m easily, I think. It would have been good to measure the high someone jumps without the bar...surely that could be done with modern technology.

@@algorithm007ify I had the exact same thought about the clearance while watching the record jump of Kostadinova. I was wondering whether she tried to beat her record later?

It will be beaten easily as soon as the right guy decides to challenge it.

I remember Valeriy Brumel and the old style of jumping back in my high school days and thought that 2 meters was like going to the moon. When Dick Fosbury jumped with the "back first" technique I wondered how high we would go. Yaroslava was so graceful making that record jump. Salute from Lithuania.

Her speed on the approach is what gives her the ability to do this she's fast and strong.

I remember watching the 1987 World Championships at Rome, and seeing Ben Johnson beat Carl Lewis in the 100m with a 9.83 WR that stunned the track world. (Of course, a year later, that would all fall apart...) But I also remember Johnson being interviewed and as he was talking a huge roar from the stadium crowd interrupted him - that's because Stefka Kostadinova set her 2.09 WR minutes after Johnson did! It's interesting to note that since Johnson's WR (later rescinded), the men's 100 m WR has been lowered about a dozen times, to 9.58, while Kostadinova's WR stood the test of time... until now. Amazing to consider that Mahuchkin was born 14 years AFTER the world record she broke was set...

Всё ПРОСТО,............. это называется - ЦИВИЛИЗАЦИОННАЯ БЕСПЕРСПЕКТИВНОСТЬ ........

Seven feet? She doesn't even know what that means! She thinks in meters, in centimeters, like everyone in the world (besides people in US) does! Nobody cares about "7 feet". We care about 2,11 m, 2,12 m and 2,13 m. Very nice video, though! Yaroslava is a goddess!

I was lucky enough to be able to watch live and in person when Kajsa Bergqvist broke the women's indoor world record at 2,08m in 2006 with the previous world record holder - Heike Henkel - present at the meet as well. Heike Henkel held that world record for a long time (not as long as Stefka Kostadinova, but still 14 years) as well and was there to be honored for her life's work. I think she said something along the lines of being happy she was there to personally congratulate the person to break her record and it not being a record set in stone for an eternity as those are boring. Thinking back to when I first saw a video of Yaroslava Mahuchikh, I was impressed at her performance at her at that time pretty young age. She also seemed pretty likable as a person, so from that point on I hoped she'd stay without major injuries and make it all the way to the top - thinking in terms of competition, not necessarily world records. I was already happy seeing her pop up in videos of many world class meets and performing very well, so I'm super happy she managed to go THIS far. I'm a bit split though. She's still very young. I want her to have a great career and her improving her own record would be really cool, but at the same time I don't really like eternity records that stand for decades after, so I also hope there will be other people to challenge her on her record, both while she's active herself but also after she eventually retires.
