A Newcomer's Review of The Pikmin Trilogy

If you quit Pikmin 2 after completing the debt, you’ve missed a lot of what the game has to offer. You get so much treasure that by the time you finish the debt, you’re only halfway through the game and it just kinda ends. There’s still another level, you unlock the president, and there’s a final boss with an actual ending.

The only thing the game has to offer is a slow and annoying crawl through dungeons, instead of actually playing a pikmin game like 1 and 3 where you’re on the clock to gather resources

As a veteran, I enjoy seeing new players talk about their experience! Pikmin 2 is actually my favorite in the series, i will admit, it can get exhausting after a while and i could never play it through 1 sitting. However, this game added so much to the series that have become iconic to it! And I know you don't want to touch the game again, but i highly recommend 100%ing the game at least once, as it continues after the debt is paid. The reason I do is because of the piklopedia and treasure hoard, each treasure and enemies have notes from olimar, enemies have basic descriptions on how they work as an animal, while the treasure hoatd gives you olimars personal notes on what he thinks about the treasure. They add so much to the story and add so much character to Olimar! Makes the world of PNF-404 and Olimars home planet feel so much realer! But hey, I can't force you so it's all good ^^

Pikmin 3 does have a time limit. The more fruit you collect, the more days you have, with a max of 99 days. But the game was so easy for Pikmin veterans that I genuinely dont know anyone who took longer than 30 days lol

Yeah I could've made that clearer, I meant that it doesn't have a hard time limit. I know PIkmin 1 is still easy ish to beat in the 30 days but I still felt the pressure whereas in Pikmin 3 I never even thought about it

Pikmin 2 is like mario sunshine for me. I looked back on the game with fond memories and then replayed the game years later and hated it. Pikmin 2 is probably my least favorite pikmin game. Good thing pikmin 4 heavily improves upon what it did wrong.

Good video. You should check out the Submerged Castle cave in Pikmin 2. It brings back some timed elements from the 1st game and is considered the best cave in the game.

Thanks for watching. Yes I should've brought that one up. I did enjoy that cave but I think by the time I had reached it I just had a sour taste in my mouth anytime I had to go into a cave

I came in fully expecting slander on 2 as im used to it lol (it's my favorite one and my favorite game of all time which I know most always find very weird). But this was a lovely video nonetheless. Always happy to see people coming aboard the series as it is seriously so underrated and its Nintendo at its best as youve put it. Cant wait for Pikmin 4!

okay so in pikmin 4 caves return BUT they are NOT randomly generated, AND time passes in the cave. Also, most caves are only 2-3 floors long

Been a Pikmin fan for a long time. 1 was great, but 2 was a masterpiece to me. It's a real shame you didn't find it as enjoyable honestly. I loved the slower, more methodical approach to caves that worked the exact opposite of the above ground areas. Strategizing and assessing the threats down there to escape with your squad as intact as possible is what made me love 2. Hands down my favorite of the 3 games. 3 to me was an absolute travesty though, and a blemish on what I felt was already a perfect series. Too easy, too much handholding and guidance, too much talking (even more than the ship in Pikmin 2), it all just felt wrong to me, and is the game I've never played more than 2-3 times, at most. 1 and 2 I've gone back to countless times, even replaying them yet again on Switch.

you need to try pikmin 3 mission modes if you like time pressure as they are pure jems that only last 10 minutes max and are extremely addictive

I'm with you on Pikmin 2. It was my first Pikmin game and it was frustrating as a kid, and having 100%'d it as an adult, it's still frustrating. These days it seems to be the fan favorite of the bunch, but while as a whole I still enjoy it, set aside the rose-colored glasses and a lot of it just doesn't hold up well.

Pikmin 3 *does* have a time limit. It's not a hard-and-fast "30 days to beat the game" like Pikmin 1, but there's a limited amount of fruit in the game, and you go through juice every day, meaning you have to collect fruit to extend your time remaining as you go through the game hitting each story beat. It's not at all strict given you can play the game for a whopping 99 days if you get every fruit, and even on Ultra-Spicy which halves the juice you get from fruit, you still get ~50 days, which is more than enough for anyone with even a little experience with the series. Although, the time limit in Pikmin 1 wasn't exactly strict either: one ship part a day is ridiculously easy to keep up, and by the time you hit the Final Trial you'll probably have doubled up at least a few times, giving you a good few days to take down the Emperor Bulblax. Even as a dumb idiot kid playing the first game I was never in any real danger of running out of days. I think you're making the lack of a day limit in Pikmin 2 out to be more of an issue than it really is, the main source of the difference is time not passing in caves.

Still, you beat it on your first go as a complete first timer, and even if you hadn't I guarantee you would've managed it easily on a second playthrough

The time limit pressure kind of goes away on replays of 1. It makes the first time you play 1 amazing but for every repeat playthrough, I see no difference between 2 and 1 because you’ll never reach 30 days

Having been playing the series for about two decades, can confirm. The day limit is functionality irrelevant in 1, and so the time limit (13 min per day) feels the same from game to game

Honestly glad to get a new perspective on the series shame you didn't enjoy 2 all that much but to each their own (I dunno to me there's something about 2 that's just not like the others it's a beast all unto it's own so really it's an outlier among all three games still an outlier I've come to enjoy)

Most people seem to praise Pikmin 2 but Pikmin 1 is my favorite. I think the time limit gives you a sense of purpose. It's also fun to replay and try to do as much as you can in a single day. That's where the true beauty of the series comes from. It's that dandori spirit that Miyamoto has been speaking about.

Why is a lack of a day limit a problem? You can still go as fast as you like, it just means the game won't put a gun to your head and force you to if you don't feel like it.

I like when games put the gun to your head. Majora's Mask is my favourite game of all time and that does the same. Yeah you can impose it on yourself but there's something to a game forcing you rather than it be a self imposed limitation

The original games gave me PTSD - Pikmin Traumatic Stress Disorder, much prefer Pikmin 3s cohesive design but Pikmin 4 needs to reignite Olimar's and C.Falcons' Bromance from SSB Brawl and give us what we want!

I’m so happy that more people are being exposed to the game. Also I will admit that I think the charm of 2 comes from the original games having licensed real life items like Duracell batteries as a treasure to collect, at least for me. Tho I will say I wish that the difficulty of 2 was more present in the future entries as 3 feels extremely easy compared to the first two. I do hope that you at least finish up the rest of 2 at some point to experience the full game, (also I’m curious if you got to experience the submerged castle before you got to pay off the debt) Anyways great video man keep up the good content
