54 x 56 is (55-1) x (55+1) = 55^2 -1. The value of 55 squared is much easier to calculate. Any number ending with a 5 has a square value calculated by multiplying the first digit multiplied by the subsequent number (5 x 6) here, which is 30, plus 25 as the last two digits. Thus 55 squared is 3025. So 55^2 -1 is 3025 - 1, which is 3024.
