Thanks for going into all of the details. I missed using the distributive law in step 3 and got the wrong substitution at the a/b step. I recognized the form after the a/b substitution as something special, but didn't realize it was the setup for a Partial Fraction Expansion. Thanks for the explanation.

It’s just that he wrote everything out in such excruciating detail. Could have eliminated many steps that anyone could do in their head.
