The original movie poster should be the cover art for all 80s movies standard. Those posters were legendary.

They wanna pull in new audiences. They know that, for the most part, us oldtimer diehard fans are going to buy it anyway...whereas younger collectors that've never seen it before likely need a more modern look to attract them. No guarantee of course, but it's the logic behind why they change artwork up somewhat more often than not.

My favorite artwork for the original film is the UK VHS release - I prefer it over the original but either of these two artworks are the ones that should be used not the 1999 dvd version which includes Freddy from part 3 or 4.

Nathan Milliner here. Thanks for the name drop, Chris. I’ve been lucky enough to illustrate around 70 blu ray covers around the globe for horror movie releases and not a single release of A Nightmare on Elm Street (any film) and it’s the franchise that got me into this genre of films. The original film is my very favorite horror film. I even made a prequel fan film in honor of the original film. Did the cover for the Never Sleep Again book. I would LOVE to do art for this release or any of them. It is all the more frustrating when they put generic stuff like this out which as you pointed out, has little care or knowledge of the film they are representing. Each film has distinctive character designs to the films so to see them constantly throwing any image of Freddy onto the cover is aggravating. I even see good artists at time draw a Part 3 Freddy for a 1984 image and so on. When I was hired to do the covers I did, my goal was to give the die hard fans an image that represented that movie that they loved. That begins with finding the details and images that really capture that particular movie. Research is a part of if it’s a movie I know and love as dearly as this one, it’s going to come naturally with both love and respect. It’s definitely frustrating because this would have been a dream job.

Sadly they only did this release as an excuse to not let shoutfactory/screamfactory do a nightmare on elm street 4k set with all the nightmare movies and possibly the freddy's nightmares show.

I went ahead and pre-ordered the Zavvi ultimate collector’s edition because from the description it includes the 4K & Blu-Ray disc, Rigid Slipcase, Double Sided Poster, Booklet and a decent amount of special features.

We haven't gotten a well designed home release since the 90's DVD SET with the New Nightmare art. I'm flabbergasted Nightmare on Elm Street feels like an afterthought to the designers/studio when it comes to home releases. SCREAM FACTORY HELP!!!!!!!

It just goes to show that they hire graphic artists or producers that have absolutely no connection to the property they are working on let alone do the research needed to do it justice. Same goes for the people doing these 4k transfers and they change all the things that made the fans fall in love with them in the first place.

Everything you said I agree with Chris! I don't think they realise that the people purchasing this are passionate about artwork. I have the German media books and the artwork for the original is exactly what you said. The OG bedroom scene and OG logo. Hard to keep this one as a preorder now tbh...

Maybe I’m boring - but - I would just prefer them to use the original movie poster. I realize there are regional differences for some posters - but I like the idea of that consistency to bring back the theater experience for cover art.

This is why I'm afraid of the rumored 1990 TMNT 4k. They always use the 3rd movie Turtles for every cover that gets released. I would love to see something original and new much like Umbrella Company did for the Blu Ray Stink-o-Vision of the 1990 film.

You should do a custom collectibles dvd case but using the original case to a certain angle. I could see you using a wooden jewelry box and weathering it to look like an old closet door with blue tint to emulate poster lighting.

Yeah I grew up in London with this film on VHS and that blue artwork looked so nighttime scary when I was 7 I loved it, this artwork is shocking, and putting pics of part whatever on a part one original, no no no no but o well 😔

They should have used that art 4:32 but in 3D not normal 3D where all the picture pops out at you on two levels Do it where some parts pop out more then others multiple layers on top of each other so things on the cover look like they are at different distances They make pictures you can put on your walls that do it and then if they ever made the other movies 4K turn there original posters art into 3D

That intro was indeed hilarious! While my favorite Nightmare cover remains the red background with Freddy silhouetted in black. I adore that cover so much but it’s severely inaccurate with the Freddy vs Jason version of him and 2010 style logo. It’s horribly incorrect and that’s a problem, while it’s my favorite its wrong Continuing this trend is just wild. While movies like First Blood get crazy new art with old shots of Rambo, Michael gets that beautiful art, and even the chill Friday collections get their classic posters. So simple but man Nightmare always gets screwed

With the entire Rocky serie now out on 4K, I'm shocked NewLine/Warner or whomever is putting out this 4K edition isn't just bypassing the 40th single edition release and is just putting out a Nightmare On Elm Street 40th Anniversary complete 4K collection. Because eventually the rest of the films will surely follow on the 4k format, why double dip (the 1st film) if you don't have to? As exciting as the news of this release is, I'm going to hold off a bit and wait to see about a complete collection.

Really a shame because the original poster is beautiful. Even if they didn’t want to use that you could make some really good newly commissioned artwork. The elm street franchise is really creative and inventive yet we get such boring and bland artwork and releases compared to other franchises.

I’m interested to see the U.K. release. Warner Bros did this with The Exorcist. The U.S. got a crappy “update” and we got the original poster art (plus a lot of other benefits).

Knowing modern WB, they just did this because they probably had those images on file somewhere from previous physical releases. And instead of paying the original poster artist, or a new artist, to make the release truly special, they just went the cheap and lazy route and used images they already had so they wouldn’t have to pay anybody for something new.

Hate the steelbook artwork - bad graphics design plagues modern physical media. I gotta be honest though, the standard 4k artwork doesn't bother me too much - it's nostalgic and has its charms. Not what I wanted, obviously not representative of part 1 Freddy - but I don't mind it.

i dont mind the new art on the steelbook, i actually think it looks kinda cool. i do like the uk poster a lot better though. if it was me doing it i'd draw a new piece with some airbrush and mixed media. they might not have the rights to use the og posters, that might cost them fees from the original illustrator, and then if you do a new piece you might have to get likeness right from robert englund (which neca has to do anyways to make the figures). so that could explain the remix of the press shot photos that they own

'Cracking the shits' is a new one for me 😂 But yeah I agree with you, would love either original poster art mostly, second would be new art but as it's quite subjective can be hit or miss - dead last is this lazy mix of promo stuff that doesn't even have anything to do with part one. This is my favourite horror movie of all time and was going to be my first 4K purchase - I'll probably still get it but yeah I do hope there'll be other options

It’s actually better than I was expecting, the covers (when not using original theatrical art) for 20 years have been awful. I knew I was never getting the original UK art which is my favourite, so this is a pleasant surprise. The things you’ve pointed out are absolutely annoying but I’ll take the 80’s aesthetic at least.

One of the reasons I like to by physical is to have the OG poster art work and or good updated images! this reminds me of their artwork on the 4k of THE LOST BOYS. It looks awful. Like how could they replace that iconic poster art for that corny looking crap is beyond me.

People love to gripe about everything. First it’s the lack of a 4k nightmare. Not the biggest problem in life, especially since there was already a nice blu ray. Than it’s the artwork. Maybe Warner should just not release anything.

It may sound like whiny nitpicking but it's true. This is lazy. I've seen other classic horror do much better. Look at Friday The 13th or Hellraiser. But this?? Ugh. It's one of the top horror franchises GIVE US SOME BEAUTIFUL STUFF.

All the cover art for this upcoming 4k release is atrocious, yep they should have used the cbs fox uk cover for this film, luckily ive managed to make my own custom for it as how it should have looked. If arrow video got hold of this they would have Included the original cover art. Unfortunately we have gen z marketing ppl working on cover arts that were born after the yr 2000 and have absolutely no clue
