The 283 chevy is better than the Ford 289/ 302 they were turning 8 grand back in 1960. The first small blocks were 265's then 283's and basically the first real hot rod engine anyone used on a serious level.. changed the whole game and was the beginning of EVERY car on the track being Chevy powered or 90% out there STILL ARE. They were the LS swap of their day
@gpt50023 жыл бұрын
Sum this up.. 283 is larger bore shorter stroke than 305( allows bigger valves like the 307). And if knowledgeable some 283 can be bored to 327 cubes. Same as 327 small journal. 283 has more potential all day long. 305 was a dedicated smog era torque motor too move bigger vehicles from red light to red light. And to sell legendary model cars ya have to slap a h.o sticker on it to make the car more appealing. Even the cast cranks were built better for the 283.

I'm building a hot 283 for my 75 Camaro. The stock 350 only put out 180 HP in 75. Stock 283 was 220 HP so with the Duntov Corvette cam,headers and a high rise with 750 vacuum secondaries I should be able to lay down some rubber with the 4:88 gears in back.😉😛
@mikewillett50767 ай бұрын
Actually the 220 HP 283 used the same "929" cam that came in all basic small blocks from the mid 60's through the 70s. It had a 4 barrel and dual exhaust vs the 195 HP versions single exhaust and 2 barrel. I'd think those 2 differences should be worth more than 25 HP. Add that Duntov "097" cam and it's probably solid 250+ HP. With a more modern grind , even higher.

Guys look we know money is tight...Ok but to put a 283 inch Chevy in an mid 80s camaro then go drag racing with it tells me to our brand new to the Car guy scene. First off in order to get a car like that down the track in any kind of way you first need a motor capable of producing the Torgue necessary to get it down past the lights before the next fiscal year do you look for a motor that can already make torque like say 400 inch Small block or even a well prepared 350 .. But to use a 283 your already handicapping yourself because while they are capable of winding way up.in the RPM scale they still.make very.little in the way of Torque...they would require say a Vega or Gutted early Chevy Deuce ..NOT a car tipping the scales at 3400 LBS...

350 heads don't work on small bore SBC's like 267s or 283s due to shrouding the valve unless you bore them to 301 cubic inches. 305 or smaller cubic heads work on 283s.
