I'm going to pick up my 7 month old cat on Friday next week! I'm very excited, but like you I'm not one to have cats jumping on stove tops, kitchen counters (and dining room tables). I will try what you've tried (and sadly didn't work) - but I still want to give it a shot. But my plan is also to give him the top of the fridge. I am naively hoping that if I concede that territory, and he has a birds-eye-view of the kitchen and dining room table, that he'll be less inclined to jump on eating/food prep surfaces. I know. You're allowed to laugh at me! Wish me luck!
