You guys sure timed that right, a very useful luck-skill to have in Michigan. The wife’s work and kid’s school has limited our forays to the Big Lake. The Huron gets another season of ice flows to grind rock for us, it’s too cold to go out now, cool new waders and felt bottomed boots just don’t make up for the ice forming on one’s eyebrows. Question? Any luck slicing rocks like the big white one @11:30? I’ve seen a few of these but also left them behind. My 5 inch saw wouldn’t make it through the job. I’ve imagined them to hold a really, really old geode-like feature inside. When it’s warmer, if you’d ever like to have a few young, photogenic admirers (my girls) join you on one of your hunts, we’d love a trip to some new beaches! 16:20, I pick those up all the time and most of mine are VERY CRYSTALLIZED. LET ME SAY IT AGAIN, VERY CRYSTALLIZED... LIKE 😍. Why are they looking like that? I'm talking crystallized lol. Most importantly, where the crystals are it's fuzzy around the crystals to say.

Are you finding them in Lake Michigan? I have found them like that there. I'm not a geologist, so I can't tell you exactly what the process is that makes them that way.

Great video! The slabbed pieces you cut you should make cabochons from them. The pudding stones and Petoskey stones were really great on this video! Loved seeing my favorite KZbin couple out together again!

It's so nice sitting here in our foot of lake effect snow seeing you in shorts wading in the lake. I always love the nature vistas you give us in addition to the great rocks. That green rock you slabbed would make good turtles or crosses. Could you give me some more info on the fossil "cladypora" (don't know how to spell it). I just love them and you did a great job polishing it for Nancy.
@MichiganRocks2 жыл бұрын
Less than a week later we had snow too. Not a foot, but several inches that are still here. It's hard to imagine that I was out wading just over a week ago. Cladopora is a coral fossil in black matrix. It smells like oil when you cut or polish it. That's the common name people use for it, but I don't know if it's scientifically accurate. There's a guy who calls himself "Paleo Joe" who does guided fossil hunts in Michigan. He's doesn't actually have a degree in paleontology, but seems pretty knowledgeable. I sent him pictures of a cladopora fossil and he said that it was difficult to say exactly what coral fossil it was. I'm guessing that I and others call a lot of similar fossils "cladopora" that might not actually be cladopora.

Thanks. I think it's completely possible to have too many rocks. I've seen many out of control rock collections. I'm trying really hard to avoid that. I'm not sure I'm being all the successful, but I'm trying!

Love the polish you put on Nancy’s cladapora, and the Petoskey stones too! I’m enjoying that you are editing the polishing segments into the rock hunting portions of the videos lately. If I swear to never tell anyone where that beach is and promise limited visits (I’m disabled but can do a brief venture onto the rocks with my largest wheeledm walker) would you tell me, as fellow Alpena-ish area neighbor? (Lachine and Rogers City) let me know and I’ll get you my email. PULLLLLEASE!?!??!?

Hi Rob, can you please let me know what kind of machine you used to shine that rock for Nancy and where I can purchase one. Thank you… and thank you for sharing your videos, I have learned a lot from you and so enjoy all the wonderful rocks you find. Greetings from Ontario Canada.
@MichiganRocks2 жыл бұрын
That machine is called a cabbing machine, specifically a Kingsley North Cabber 6. The six is because it has six inch wheels. I did a review of it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGSTknWKqp6Cobs This is an affiliate link to the machine. I earn a small commission if you buy it through this link. It doesn't cost you any more though. kingsleynorth.com/kingsley-north-cabber-6-nova.html?ref=robertabram1& I have the upgraded wheels, but they sell a cheaper machine with standard wheels too.

Hey Rob, have you ever though of putting up something like Marble Shower Curtain on the wall in your shop? Should see how awesome they look as backdrops, cheap large colourful pictures. Get em from amazon, pretty cheap too, awesome looking agate and marble ones! I got a mountain range an forest in the RC room. Makes a world of difference.

Thank you both for the great video! I di have 2 questions for you: 1) At 8:58, you found a rock and said, Nice granite with some epidote.." and I first thought, oh there's a Unakite, but then you said Granite. So I don't make a mistake in the future, what is the difference between the 2? I thought it had some Feldspar, but I am no expert ;) . 2) How long did it take you to polish up the fossil from start to finish? I get impateint when I use my Cab King 6, lol, so just trying to see how long it takes others to polish from Wheel 1 to finish. Thank you in advance for all your knowledge and sharing it with us! 😁
@MichiganRocks2 жыл бұрын
Unakite is actually a type of granite. It contains epidote (green), feldspar (pink/red/orange) and quartz. The rock in this video didn't have enough feldspar to look like unakite to me. I'm not a geologist, but I think of unakite as being mostly made of feldspar and epidote. Several people asked how long it took me to polish the black fossil. I polished three fossils, but I'm assuming you don't mean the Petoskeys. I can't remember exactly how long it took. It takes a lot longer when I'm filming it because I have to keep moving the lights, camera and microphone around. I'd estimate it took around 20 minutes if I hadn't been making a video. That's a very rough guess. That rock is really soft like a Petoskey stone, probably around 3 on the Mohs scale. If you're comparing to polishing a harder rock, you need to take that into consideration.
