As Katy did rocks say: So many beutiful rocks. That dark one with greenish stripes, I had cut out som very thin slabs and polished them and made a "surface" to a type of service tray or the top of a small table, or around my open fire or stove , something, it was really beutiful, like black marble. I loved many that you left, as usual🤣🤩👍👍👋

Again I’m dumbfounded on how your able to create such beautiful pieces out of stone - That black one is stunning ! The slabs you created with the patterns on the inside - they remind me of the Nazca lines down in Perú Last night I showed Mother ( Late stage dementia sufferer ) this latest video and she was enraptured …. She suddenly had all kinds of wonderful lakeshore memories come flooding out ( pun intended 😅 )… of her time on the beaches of Milwaukee her hometown … So thanks to the both of you she had a great night !!! You guys sure timed that right, a very useful luck-skill to have in Michigan. The wife’s work and kid’s school has limited our forays to the Big Lake. The Huron gets another season of ice flows to grind rock for us, it’s too cold to go out now, cool new waders and felt bottomed boots just don’t make up for the ice forming on one’s eyebrows. Question? Any luck slicing rocks like the big white one @11:30? I’ve seen a few of these but also left them behind. My 5 inch saw wouldn’t make it through the job. I’ve imagined them to hold a really, really old geode-like feature inside. When it’s warmer, if you’d ever like to have a few young, photogenic admirers (my girls) join you on one of your hunts, we’d love a trip to some new beaches! Stay safe, stay warm, keep the videos coming!

@@jmweidner I didn't know if you were from Michigan or not. Vernors is a ginger ale here in Michigan. It's not at all like Canada Dry ginger ale. It's not a ginger beer either. It's a popular drink here, but never used to be available in other states. I think it might be a little more widespread now. Anyhow, it is extremely carbonated. I almost always cough from inhaling the bubbles coming up from the glass. My nieces and nephew used to call it "the coughing pop" when they were kids. McDonalds just started offering Vernors here in Michigan. I'm not if it's offered in other areas. I think my friend was just being a kid, trying to be funny. Being extremely carbonated, it hurt.

I'm definitely thinking of making a video of the slabbed rock. Maybe I'll make a variety of things from it. It's funny that you called it black and green. Someone else called it green and white, I think. In person, it's green with yellow markings. I guess every screen shows it a little different.

I was just down in the basement looking at that slab again. I'm going to change my assessment of the color. I'd call it very dark green with very light green streaks.

Nope. I only have a ten inch saw, so the biggest slab I can cut is about 3.5 inches across. I feel like that's the bare minimum diameter for a coaster. They would be nice, though.

It's so nice sitting here in our foot of lake effect snow seeing you in shorts wading in the lake. I always love the nature vistas you give us in addition to the great rocks. That green rock you slabbed would make good turtles or crosses. Could you give me some more info on the fossil "cladypora" (don't know how to spell it). I just love them and you did a great job polishing it for Nancy.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 жыл бұрын
Less than a week later we had snow too. Not a foot, but several inches that are still here. It's hard to imagine that I was out wading just over a week ago. Cladopora is a coral fossil in black matrix. It smells like oil when you cut or polish it. That's the common name people use for it, but I don't know if it's scientifically accurate. There's a guy who calls himself "Paleo Joe" who does guided fossil hunts in Michigan. He's doesn't actually have a degree in paleontology, but seems pretty knowledgeable. I sent him pictures of a cladopora fossil and he said that it was difficult to say exactly what coral fossil it was. I'm guessing that I and others call a lot of similar fossils "cladopora" that might not actually be cladopora.

That machine is called a cabbing machine, specifically a Kingsley North Cabber 6. The six is because it has six inch wheels. I did a review of it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGSTknWKqp6Cobs This is an affiliate link to the machine. I earn a small commission if you buy it through this link. It doesn't cost you any more though. kingsleynorth.com/kingsley-north-cabber-6-nova.html?ref=robertabram1& I have the upgraded wheels, but they sell a cheaper machine with standard wheels too.

Thank you both for the great video! I di have 2 questions for you: 1) At 8:58, you found a rock and said, Nice granite with some epidote.." and I first thought, oh there's a Unakite, but then you said Granite. So I don't make a mistake in the future, what is the difference between the 2? I thought it had some Feldspar, but I am no expert ;) . 2) How long did it take you to polish up the fossil from start to finish? I get impateint when I use my Cab King 6, lol, so just trying to see how long it takes others to polish from Wheel 1 to finish. Thank you in advance for all your knowledge and sharing it with us! 😁
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 жыл бұрын
Unakite is actually a type of granite. It contains epidote (green), feldspar (pink/red/orange) and quartz. The rock in this video didn't have enough feldspar to look like unakite to me. I'm not a geologist, but I think of unakite as being mostly made of feldspar and epidote. Several people asked how long it took me to polish the black fossil. I polished three fossils, but I'm assuming you don't mean the Petoskeys. I can't remember exactly how long it took. It takes a lot longer when I'm filming it because I have to keep moving the lights, camera and microphone around. I'd estimate it took around 20 minutes if I hadn't been making a video. That's a very rough guess. That rock is really soft like a Petoskey stone, probably around 3 on the Mohs scale. If you're comparing to polishing a harder rock, you need to take that into consideration.
