Nice first hunt of the year! I had my first rock hunting of the year in February. I went last weekend and hit my favorite spot for agates. It did not disappoint, thanks to a good storm that came thru a few days before I got there. I have finally gotten my grandson trained well as he found a couple of nice agates. I found a few myself over a couple of days that we were there. It was nice not to freeze like I did in February. I even got hit by a wave, and the water didn't feel too bad. Can't wait to see where else you hunt this year.

My boyfriend is from Michigan and we stayed at lake superior for a week at a campground. I had the time of my life finding rocks. We both walked the beach and he was so sweet to take the time every day to help me with my favorite pastime. I love finding rocks that are just unique. If I was there they'd find me months later just shriveled up with rocks all around me and a big pile that I would be clinging to still. So many beautiful rocks. I'd just be drooling and walking in circles. 😂

@@jillvasquez1010 Yes ma'am I'm so easily distracted by unique stones. It's funny though Steve's Mom was the same way. He used to help her up in Michigan and everywhere she would go she was always picking up rocks. So when he and I met he was amazed that I was just as crazy about the stones. Now he just knows how I'm looking down for some stones to take home. Up in Mackinac he actually rented us bikes to haul the box back and forth every time we went to the beach. I love that you are a stonie too. 🫶🏻

Just did my first one Tuesday at Sturgeon Point! Met a few rock hounds along the way who are fans as well. Finally wised up and strapped that five gallon bucket to a hand cart, one more messin' around 😄 , gotta find some more beauties to get the shower walls done!

Rock hunt? you mean treasure hunt!! ❤ I've been bringing home rocks since the age of 3. I'd love to fly across the Atlantic one day and come to Michigan to go treasure hunting 😇 Best wishes from the Netherlands

When will we see the “banded (find-of-the-day) chert” post tumbled?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Жыл бұрын
That's an excellent question. I just got back from a two week rock collecting trip, plus the rocks I collect locally, so I have a huge backlog of tumbling to do. On top of that, chert is really hard and takes months to tumble. I wish I could give you an estimate, but I have no idea. I did just pick it up and admire it the other day. What a great rock.

Red is usually iron, and green is often copper, from my understanding. Is Lake Michigan large enough to have a tidal cycle? I’ve heard the largest of the Great Lakes here, and around the world, do.
@tiffanymcgillie7114
@tiffanymcgillie7114 Жыл бұрын
I think this particular video is from Lake Huron, another of the Great Lakes surrounding Michigan. I don't think the Great Lakes are technically considered to be tidal waters. However, they do have waves (sometimes big ones!) formed by localized winds.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Жыл бұрын
Thanks for answering that, @tiffanymcgillie7114. @CynthiaPriceSCCCPres, copper oxidizes green, but not all green rocks are copper. A lot of them around here contain the mineral epidote. There's no copper in this area, but there is some up in the Keweenaw peninsula. The green is a lighter color green that what you saw in this video.

Hey Rob! 👋 I apologize in advance for another long-winded comment... On the bright side, the KZbin algorithm will love this one! 😉 Isn't it nice to finally get out and do some fair-weather rock hunting?🌞 I know I sure was excited when it reached almost 80° recently! But then it snowed the very next day...🌨️ You had some great finds! Thanks for sharing them with us! We live in such a beautiful state, with such a diverse variety of stones to admire and collect! I appreciate all things Michigan has to offer more and more each time I'm outside, enjoying nature. I'd like to make a couple of comments about the video, if I may... 1.) That was an amazing piece of granite you found at 7:44! It would have been in my bag very fast! FYI - there is an aluminum oxide based polish (calcined alumina) called #61 Rapid Polish, and it's known for putting an excellent polish on stones that are prone to undercutting. I'd love to see you finally bring home some of that beautiful granite, and polish up a batch with #61 Rapid Polish! Just imagine how thrilled the missus will be when she finally sees some granite in your bucket! If you want to give it a try, I'll be more than happy to send you a few tablespoons (I think it's 1/2 tsp. per 4 pounds of rocks). I owe you a package anyway... 2.) That banded chert at 19:26 is another one I would have taken home to tumble... I've been running chert-like stones (some banded, some not) pretty much non-stop since January, and I've learned just how unpredictable they are. Some stones look beautiful going in, but blah coming out. The reverse is also true... often times, it's the ones you wouldn't hold your breath for, that end up taking your breath away! And yes, that amazing piece of banded chert you found at 27:03 would have made me happy, happy, happy as well! I'm interested to see how it turns out after you're done tumbling it. I had a piece that was very unique, with extremely well defined bands, some of which, due to uneven weathering, actually protruded out of the rock, causing the bands themselves to take on a 3-dimensional look. Unfortunately, by the time it came out of final polish, the bands were barely distinguishable, and it looked just like an average piece of ordinary chert. I tell you this, not to rain on your parade, but just as anecdotal evidence that you can't judge a chert by its cover, good or bad. 😉 3.) I can't believe you walked away from that very unique piece of Unakite at 22:01! Crazy that you picked it up, but didn't even comment on it. Are you losing your love for the Christmas rocks (that's what I call them on account of the red and green)? 4.) I've had some good luck lately tumbling silicified coral. Yes, there tends to be a little undercutting, but if you're willing to accept a small amount of "character," they repay you in spades! With the right polish (Raybrite A and/or Tin Oxide and/or #61 Rapid Polish), they take an amazing shine! They also show some great color variation, with beautiful browns, whites, grays, and even some blues thrown in for good measure (think honeycomb coral with different colors in alternating cells)! I'll DM you a picture of a piece of silicified horn coral that I just took out of final polish. Well, that's all I have for you. It's taken me two days to get this far, so I better just send it before I forget, and/or the content becomes irrelevant. Talk to you later, my friend! Happy tumbles!

Who knew that a hard object created in the earth could bring us such euphoria. Another granite bowling ball, I wish it would work the feldspar in it makes the entire rock pop out. Chert tumbles great. What I'll probably do is tumble it for a few weeks and then work on the bad spots on my cabbing machine. Then throw it back in the tumbler to finish up. I have a couple nice ones from last summer that are getting really close to being done with the first stage.
