Hi I am a big fan of the PCT I have seen many videos I follow a few people each year of hikers that post videos on 3/10-23 on a Friday after work it’s raining the Sierra snow pack is at a all time high and with this storm even more at 196% of normal as a older person I have been getting ready for this trip and if it’s going to happen it’s going to be next year if it happens and is only part because of health issues I don’t care I will make it I am sure everyone that posts videos take me on every step of the adventures from touching the separation wall of South American from The northern people to the last step into Canada. Yours has been a great refreshing journey as you talk you way leading me from one day into the next as I sit watching you two so far your wife has not said one word ? Because she has no need to her happy places say everything In a few words thank you. JoP. A friend you may never meet but may pass on trails hike on it will keep you young forever there are so many trails you could never do all of them that what heaven is for. JoP

Wow. I am endlessly grateful for you and Flash bringing us along on your beautiful spiritual journey. Your sentiments and personality resonate with me deeply, Ray. I, too, am a lover of literature and the outdoors; you truly spoke to me in the language and feeling I had yet to find in another PCT documentary. Between loving and appreciating the small beauties of nature, embracing hard times, and the reflections on the modern world, I couldn't ask for more. My favorite moment was the poem that you read to us. That was a powerful moment and a soulfully resonating poem. I love the sentiment about how you two couldn't complete the whole trail due to fires, but it was okay: the trail isn't about hiking between two wooden posts, and if it is, then your view is skewed. I look forward to following in your footsteps one day, regardless of whether or not nature will allow me to complete the whole distance. Thank you and I hope you and Flash continue to have youthful and meaningful journeys aplenty!
@akwild1 Жыл бұрын
Andrew, thank you for your compliment. I faced a few fears before starting our hike, and then when I put together this film. I knew that story was different from all the others, and I was afraid it might not resonate with anyone. I decided to focus on my words, and not be tempted to produce rapid-fire video shots to accommodate a world of short attention spans. But at some point, I decided to create a film that expressed my inner journey, and if that message did not resonate with others, so be it. At least, my personal catharsis would be complete. It's been a joy to see that I'm not alone, that there are others who connected with my experience and are inspired to choose a different, wilder path. Thank you again for telling me how the film impacted you, and I wish you all the best.

Thank you, Barb. I feel like our trip was a magic carpet ride compared to the challenges ahead for this year's hikers. Honestly, we live in Alaska and endure snow in all our adventures, but I find the conditions this year intimidating. I believe the Trail Decides, so we had to use our better judgment to skip by the smoke the last 100 miles leading into Oregon, and in Oregon. I didn't want to compromise my health after I worked so hard to improve it. Flash and I are planning to return in July to finish Nor Cal, Oregon, and the last 30 miles. First, many, many thanks for bringing us along on your journey. This transcends being a simple video record of a thru-hike. Yours is truly an inspiration. Since the age of 13 I have dreamt of walking the PCT -- since before the trail was completed -- but so far it hasn't been meant to be. Some might say life got in the way. Perhaps it's more accurate to say my coddiwompling track meandered elsewhere. I've had no regrets; indeed, I've been living a dream this last 35 years. However, this year I turned 60, and a voice from long ago recently percolated to the surface from amongst dreams long suppressed. Last year I started looking up information on the PCT and thru-hiking, and from amongst the mind-numbing volumes of data, your film caught my eye. It will be at least a few years until I can attempt the trail. Indeed, it may never come to pass -- after all, to coddiwomple is, to some extent, to surrender to the whims of life's trail. Nevertheless, I feel able to move forward more purposely. Thank you for the inspiration. All the very best, Richard Curtis Toyama, Japan
@akwild1 Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Richard. One of my greatest joys was hiking with two older guys, Tom and Jim, who I met early on. And then Marcel and Rumi. I remember our conversations about chasing life, abandoning doubt, and living like vagabonds -- if only for a few months. The connection with these folks was quick and profound. Unfortunately, most of the guys my age I know have lost the fire, and are content to sit around drinking beer, watching tv, and lamenting about a whole host of miseries. I can't even begin to express how awesome it is to run into people you feel like you've known your entire life because of the obstacles and thoughts they conquered to make it to the trail. I think it's best not to overthink the trail too much. It's more like a series of five-day backpacking trips, except on one stretch in the Sierra section, and you'll adapt and figure out how to respond with each hand the trail delivers. All the best, and Godspeed!

@@akwild1 Thank you! I've been lucky as a teacher to have been infused with a lot of youthful energy by my high school students over the years. At the very least I've been too distracted by various antics of youth to have the time to focus on personal misery -- albeit I have now and then found the time to focus on beer ... I'll be preparing for the trail, step by step, but not too sure exactly where the process will lead, but excited to see where it ultimately goes. Please do take care on your end as well. If you'll be making more videos, I'll happily watch. 安全第一で頑張って下さい! (Be safe and keep at it!)

@@richardinjapan4578 I get it. I retired from teaching four years ago. Teaching absorbs all your energy, and that’s okay, because it’s a meaningful career. Hiking the PCT, and making this video, were things I could finally do for myself. After a career of putting other people’s needs ahead of my own, the trek and film allowed me to regain my mental, physical and spiritual health. I felt suffocated and it took me awhile to give myself permission to be selfish. The PCT freed me from a lot of chains. Once we decided to hike the PCT, there was no stopping us from starting the trek.

Wow! This is so beautiful and moving, all I can do is cry! You made me feel as if I was there, delighting in the dance of the butterfly, breathing the cold and crisp mountain air, slowing down, taking in the expanse of these wild places. Thank you so much for offering up your journey and honest self reflection. It's truly incredible!

Thank you, Marnie. I wanted to be true to my voice, and so, I didn’t consider how to make the video appealing to others. But by being true to myself, the film seems to have rung true to others. I am very grateful for your kind words.

@@akwild1 My husband and I are avid hikers and backpackers. We live only an hour from the east side of RMNP. So we're up there frequently. I've only got 11 hikes in this year. Our snowpack is at 140%. Storms coming in constantly every few days. It's going to take forever for dry trails to emerge. Our biggest BP trip this year will be The Maroon Bells 4 pass loop. Really hoping to do the JMT in the next couple of years. Do you have more thru-hikes planned?

The Sierra was very special for us. I kept reminding myself to enjoy this section because I would probably never manage to come back to it, except through my memories. Thank you for your kind comment, and for watching. Coddiwomple II covers our return to the PCT in 2023 to hike the miles we missed. I hope you do find yourself on the trail some day. Thank you, Chris. Your words "indomitable spirit" touched my heart. I joked with people that as a person with Polish ancestry, I believed I was naturally long-suffering, i.e. stubborn, and that quality would come in handy during the trip. I learned to find joy in each dawn on the trail. Thank you again for your kind words.

This video was an absolute sumptuous delight from start to finish! The narration is sublime, the visuals are gorgeous, but above all you and Flash and the story of your hike was just so uplifting, joyful and interesting to share in, if only in the smallest KZbin fraction of it, vicariously. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, thank you! When I was producing the video I had my doubts about how it would be received: Who would possibly be uplifted by a story about an old guy who dreads growing old and is looking for at least one more grand adventure? Apparently, it showed there’s a lot of us. Thank you again for your kind words.

Thank you. I’ll admit I had my doubts about my approach with this video. I thought because it was so personal it might not resonate with others. I’ve always been someone a bit alienated from the herd. It’s been exhilarating for me to see how warmly this “piece of my heart” has been received. It’s inspiring to know there might be other people out there who share an adventurous kinship. Thank you! I wish you luck on your trip this year. Give my regards to Rivendell!
